In Ladakh to pay tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's 79th birth anniversary, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday hit out at the Centre, saying that its claim that not an inch of Indian land was taken by China's People Liberation Army (PLA) troops "is not true".

The Congress MP claimed the locals, too, contend that Indian territory was intruded upon and taken by the Chinese troops, adding that it was a matter of concern.

Speaking to reporters after paying floral tributes to a framed photograph of the former PM by a gleaming Pangong Tso lake on an overcast Sunday morning, the Congress leader said, "The locals here are concerned about China taking our land. They have said that the Chinese troops took away their grazing land. However, the PM says not an inch of land was taken away. This is not true, you can ask anyone here," said Rahul Gandhi.

Mr Gandhi also raised questions over the Union territory status given to Ladakh after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories following the abrogation of Article 370.

"There were so many complaints from the people of Ladakh, they are not happy with the status that has been given to them. They want more representation, and unemployment is also a concern. People are saying that the state should not be run by bureaucracy but by representatives of the people," the Congress MP added.

Rahul Gandhi recalled a conversation with his father in which Rajiv Gandhi told him that Pangong Tso is the most beautiful place on earth.

"I remember, when I was small, my father once returned from a visit to Pangong Tso and showed me some pictures of the lake. He told me that this is the most beautiful place on earth. During the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', I was scheduled to come to Ladkah but because of some logistical reasons, the visit had to be shelved. So I thought of a visit later and a longer stay here. I will also be visiting the Nubra Valley and Kargil."

During his visit, Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Vikar Rasool Wani, president of the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee and several other party officials and workers.

Earlier, in a post on the social media platform 'X', Rahul Gandhi wrote, "Papa, the dreams you had for India are shown from these priceless memories. Your mark is my way - understanding the struggles and dreams of every Indian, listening to the voice of Mother India."

Veteran Congress leader, Digvijaya Singh, has triggered a massive row with his controversial remarks against the BJP, drawing sharp condemnation from its party leaders.

Digvijaya Singh alleged the BJP is "planning communal riots" in Madhya Pradesh before the assembly elections, just as they "orchestrated violence" in Haryana's Nuh.

"The way these people caused communal violence in Nuh in Haryana, they have plans to instigate such riots (in Madhya Pradesh)," Mr Singh said while addressing a gathering of lawyers in Bhopal.

Mr Singh said the BJP is planning riots in Madhya Pradesh because the party can sense its imminent defeat in the upcoming elections.

"The BJP knows there is a lot of resentment against the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in the state," he said.

'Hopefully, we are going to form the next government in the state," he added.

Responding to the allegations, state BJP President VD Sharma said, the veteran leader has no creditability left in the party.

Dubbing him "Mr Bhantadar (Disaster)", Mr Sharma said, "he is known for making such baseless allegations."

"The BJP does politics of development. Digivijay Singh left Madhya Pradesh in 2003 in a pitiable condition, and it was his party which made development in the region," Mr Sharma said.

BJP has announced 21 candidates for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly and 39 for the 230-member Madhya Pradesh House.

At least six people, including two home guards and a mosque cleric, were killed in the clashes in Haryana's Nuh earlier this month.

The clash broke out over an attempt to stop a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession and later spread to Gurugram, Palwal and other districts of Haryana. Several vehicles, food joints, and shops were set on fire by unruly mobs.

More than 390 people have been arrested and 118 others detained in connection with the violence, officials said.

A man and his wife were beaten to death with iron rods and sticks by their neighbours in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur. Three people have been arrested in the case, and police say that the murder was allegedly a result of an affair between the victim's son and the daughter of one of the accused.

The couple, Abbas and his wife Kamrul Nisha, died on the spot in the attack on Friday and all the accused fled from the spot.

Sitapur Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra said a few years back Abbas's son had eloped with a girl from the neighbouring household. A case was registered in this regard and Abbas's son was sent to jail.

When Abbas's son was released from jail a few days back, some members of the family planned the attack on the couple, police said.

"According to the villagers, the son of the deceased couple and Shaukat Rampal's daughter Ruby had an affair. Shaukat had abducted Ruby in the year 2020. At that time, Ruby was a minor and after registering a case, the police sent Shaukat to jail. He again abducted and married Ruby in June," Chakresh Mishra said.

Police say that the three main accused have been arrest and a hunt is on for two more.

It is alleged that he r***d her several times between 2020 and 2021. When the teen became pregnant, the accused confided in to this wife, it is alleged. The official's wife allegedly asked their son to get medicines and the pregnancy was terminated at home, the minor girl has told police in her complaint.

Once bitten, twice "not" shy! Snakes may rattle many but rescuing the reptiles is a child's play for Pawan Jogpal from Haryana's Fatehabad district, who is undeterred even after being bitten 10 times.

The 28-year-old man from Bhattu Kalan village said he has been rescuing snakes, which enter people's homes in the rural hinterland and other places, for nearly a decade now.

Jogpal claimed he has rescued more than 5,600 snakes and has been bitten 10 times so far.

"The latest snake I rescued was a baby cobra, which was spotted in an open area near the venue of the Independence Day function in Fatehabad, where the chief minister was to unfurl the national flag," he said.

Jogpal said he rescued many snakes who took shelter on trees during the recent floods which caused waterlogging in many areas.

The rescued snakes are released in the forests, he said.

"I have been rescuing snakes for more than 10 years now. Most of them are the ones which enter people's homes and gardens in villages," Jogpal said.

Asked what prompted him to take up snake rescue as a full time job, he shared an anecdote.

Jogpal said when he was around 17 years old, a snake had entered his house in his village.

He said while the neighbours and other people gathered there tried to kill it, he was persuading them not to harm the creature.

"I tried to rescue it, but in the meantime someone hit the snake and killed it. That incident left a deep impression on me. Later, I started watching the Discovery channel. First, I started rescuing small snakes. I read many books about snakes and gathered knowledge about them," he said.

"Now, I can handle snakes quite easily. So far, I have rescued more than 5,600 snakes. I have been bitten 10 times by snakes, including a cobra due to which I was hospitalised for two days. I was also bitten by a wolf snake, which was non-venomous," Jogpal said.

He said he also rescues monitor lizards or any bird which he finds injured.

"People call me over phone and I reach there with my team and we rescue snakes and leave them in jungles," he said.

During recent floods, Indian rat snake (Ptyas Mucosa), cobras and some other snakes like common sand boa were found clinging on to the trees. They had taken shelter on trees and shrubs as they could not be in water for long. And I rescued 400 to 500 such snakes, he said.

Jogpal said he has three more people who work for him in his team.

"We carry special gloves, sticks, shoes, hook and other safety gear with us," he said.

He said the Fatehabad district administration has also recognised the social service he and his team are doing and has honoured him in the past.

"In the beginning, when I started rescuing snakes and took it up as fulltime thing, my family used to tell me not to do this. But now they are okay with what I love doing," he said.

Jogpal said he also tries to create awareness among people about snakes.

"In our area, people don't kill snakes anymore. If they spot a snake, they call me and we rescue it. I tell people that snakes only attack in self defence when they feel their life is in danger," he said.

A man and a woman in Tripura were on Saturday tied to an electric pole and publicly humiliated for hours over an alleged relationship. The man is married and has two children, while the woman is a 20-year-old who lives with her cousin brother and sister-in-law. Videos of the assault have gone viral on social media.

In the video, an elderly woman is pulling the woman's hair and hitting her repeatedly, with the man tied to the same electric pole alongside her. A group of people can be seen watching the assault, but nobody appears to help. Another man animatedly wags his finger and verbally chastises the couple.

The incident is from the Belonia town in the South Tripura district.

The married man was allegedly found to be engaged in a romantic relationship with the 20-year-old woman from the same area. Locals caught them together on Saturday morning and tied them to the pole for a "shalishi baithak" -- a form of impromptu public trial through a Kangaroo court.

The police later arrived and intervened to release the victims.

None of the parties involved, including the injured man and woman, chose to file any formal complaints, though the police have registered a case and an investigation is underway.

The cousin brother of the young woman has been taken into custody, and her sister-in-law is an accused in the physical assault.

The ruling Congress is aiming to win at least 75 of the 90 seats in the upcoming assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, party's state in-charge Kumari Selja has said.

The state assembly polls are due this year-end.

Talking to reporters after meetings of the Chhattisgarh Congress political affairs committee and the party's Lok Sabha observers in the state, Ms Selja said the first list of party candidates would be released in the first week of September.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal, Ajay Maken, who is the head of the party's screening committee for Chhattisgarh polls, and state Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel were present at the two meetings.

Ms Selja said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a convention of youth in Raipur on September 2 and party president Mallikarjun Kharge will attend an event in the state's Rajnandgaon district on September 8.

"We are confident that we will win at least 75 seats. The planning commission (NITI Aayog) in its report has admitted that 40 lakh people in Chhattisgarh have come out of poverty. You can imagine how the state government has taken care of the needy. Our government has worked for the uplift of every section. Our target is to win at least 75 seats," Ms Selja said.

About the ticket distribution process, the applications of ticket aspirants will be accepted at the Block Congress Committee (BCC) level till August 22, and the BCC will convene its meeting on August 24, she said.

The BCC will forward selected names to the District Congress Committee (DCC) by August 26. The DCC, after concluding its meeting on August 28-29, will send its proposal to the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) by August 31.

Subsequently, the state election committee will hold a meeting on September 3 and the next day, the screening committee meeting will be held following which recommendations will be sent to the central election committee, she said.

"Our effort will be to release the first list of candidates in the first week of September after the CEC meeting," Ms Selja said.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to participate in the Yuva Mitan Sammelan in Raipur city on September 2, while Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge will attend an event in Rajnandgaon district on September 8, she said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to his father and former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, on his 79th birth anniversary from the banks of Pangong Lake in Ladakh this morning.

Rahul Gandhi embarked on a bike ride to Pangong Lake in Ladakh on Saturday. The prayer meeting was held at the banks of Pangong Lake to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi this morning.

Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the 7th Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989, was born on August 20, 1944.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders and workers will pay tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his birth anniversary in the national capital.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Leh to begin his two-day visit to the Union Territory on Thursday and later decided to extend his tour till August 25.

This is his first visit to Ladakh since Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories, Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, following the removal of Articles 370 and 35 (A) on August 5, 2019.

On Friday he interacted with youth in Leh.

According to Congress party sources, Rahul Gandhi will also watch a football match in Leh.

Rahul Gandhi has been a footballer during his college days. He will also participate in the meeting of the 30-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC)-Kargil elections on August 25, they said.

Congress and National Conference have forged a pre-poll alliance against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the Kargil council polls scheduled to be held on September 10.

Although the Congress MP visited Srinagar and Jammu twice earlier this year, he, however, did not travel to Ladakh.

In January, the Congress leader visited Jammu and Srinagar during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Again on a personal visit in February, he visited the Gulmarg ski resort.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose appointed Buddhadeb Sau as the officiating vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University on Saturday night, officials said.

Buddhadeb Sau is a professor in the varsity's Department of Mathematics, they said.

CV Bose, also the chancellor of the varsity, issued orders authorising Sau to exercise the powers and perform the duties of the vice-chancellor with immediate effect, they added.

The varsity, which is without a full-time vice-chancellor since June, is at the eye of a storm over the death of a student at its hostel allegedly due to ragging.

The first-year undergraduate student died after falling from the second-floor balcony of the varsity's main hostel on August 9. His family alleged he was a victim of ragging.

The tenure of the varsity's last full-time vice-chancellor Suranjan Das, who served for nine years, ended on May 31. Following that, the Governor appointed Amitabha Datta, the pro-VC of the varsity, as the officiating vice-chancellor but he resigned on August 4.

Suranjan Datta had resigned after being asked by the governor.

Ten people have been detained in connection with the killing of a 27-year-old man by a group of people in Rajasthan's Kotputli-Behror district, police said on Saturday.

Some forest department employees are alleged to have been involved in the case, they said.

Kotputli-Behror Superintendent of Police Ranjita Sharma denied it to be a case of mob lynching, stating that the injury marks on the body did not suggest so.

"Prima facie, the victim died of internal bleeding from the use of a sharp-edged weapon," she said.

"Ten people have been detained in the case and are being interrogated. A Forensic Science Laboratory team has been called from Jaipur to collect samples from the spot. Soon the accused will be arrested," she said.

The police officer said the role of three or four employees of the forest department and two others in the incident has come to the fore.

Meanwhile, family members and neighbours of the victim, Wasim, reached Harsora police station and submitted a memorandum to ASP Anil Sharma, demanding compensation, transparent probe and swift action in the case.

Wasim was allegedly beaten to death by a group of people and two were injured in the incident, the police said on Friday.

Wasim's family alleged that forest department personnel thrashed him and two others in Narol village on Thursday.

The police reached Narol village late on Thursday after receiving information about a fight and found that three injured men had been taken to a local hospital. Wasim, who was referred to the Kotputli Hospital, succumbed to his injuries.

Wasim's relative told reporters that he and two others had gone to cut trees outside a house and collect wood with the consent of the homeowner when the incident took place.

Harsora police station Head Constable Giriraj Singh said, "The victim's last rites were performed late on Friday after post-mortem."

The second and final de-boosting operation of India's Moon mission Chandrayaan-3 successfully completed this morning, as scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) closely monitored the critical phase ahead of the spacecraft's landing on the lunar surface on Wednesday.

The lander Vikram has placed itself in an orbit where the closest point to the Moon is 25 km and the farthest is 134 km. It is from this orbit that it will try a soft-landing in the unexplored south polar region of the Moon on Wednesday, ISRO has said.

"The second and final deboosting operation has successfully reduced the LM orbit to 25 km x 134 km. The module would undergo internal checks and await the sun-rise at the designated landing site. The powered descent is expected to commence on August 23, 2023, around 1745 Hrs. IST," ISRO posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The lander Vikram has been descending in the Moon's orbit in an automated mode; it has been deciding on its own how to go about its functions.

During the first de-boosting operation on Friday, former ISRO chief K Sivan told NDTV that the Chandrayaan-3 lander's design is the same as the one used in the previous Chandrayaan-2 mission.

"There is no change in design. Based on observations from Chandrayaan-2, all errors that took place in the mission have been corrected," he said.

A successful Moon landing will make India the historic fourth country to have achieved this feat.

On Thursday, the lander module separated from the propulsion module that had carried it all the way from Earth. The propulsion module will now continue orbiting Earth for months or even years, and study its atmosphere and measure the polarisation of light from clouds.

Following the detachment, the lander shared its first images of the Moon on Thursday.

Once on the Moon, the lander Vikram will photograph the Pragyaan rover, which will study the chemical makeup of the Moon's surface and search for water. It has a lifespan of one lunar day, equivalent to 14 days on Earth.

Chandrayaan-3 was launched into space by the LVM3 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 14. It entered the lunar orbit on August 5.

Meanwhile, an "emergency" was detected on Saturday during a manoeuvre by Russia's Luna-25 probe prior to its Moon landing, Russian space agency Roscosmos said. "Thrust was released to transfer the probe onto the pre-landing orbit," Roscosmos said in a statement.

"During the operation, an emergency situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the carrying out of the manoeuvre within the specified conditions," it said.

The lander, Russia's first such mission in almost 50 years, was successfully placed in the Moon's orbit on Wednesday after being launched from the Vostochny cosmodrome in the country's far east.

Roscosmos did not say if the incident would delay the landing, due to take place on Monday, north of the Boguslawsky crater on the lunar south pole.

19/08/2023

Unacademy sacked teacher Karan Sangwan on Saturday alleged that the firm terminated his service under pressure from trolls on social media who misinterpreted his generic remark to vote for educated candidates.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Karan Sangwan said he made the generic remark on his YouTube channel and not during his lecture at Unacademy.

"Why did termination happen? There is a pressure which gets built and you burst under its load. You (Unacademy) could not deal with the pressure. Therefore, under pressure you had to take an action which you may have not desired to or you desired to...I don't know. I can't say anything about what your intentions were?" Mr Sangwan said.

Mr Sangwan said that Unacademy acted against him without hearing him out.

"You directly sent me a termination notice," Karan Sangwan said, adding that to hide the pressure, Unacademy used the term "code of conduct" without defining a political statement.

He said that Unacademy cited views expressed by a Twitter account as an example in the termination notice. "Someone else's views were imposed on me," Mr Sangwan said.

Mr Sangwan said that he was hurled abuses, called anti-national and death threats were issued to him by trollers "who appeared to be illiterate" after his video was spread on August 13.

Unacademy co-founder Roman Saini said that Karan Sangwan was in breach of contract and therefore the company had to part ways with him.

Mr Saini in a tweet on the matter said Unacademy is an education platform that is deeply committed to imparting quality education.

"To do this we have in place a strict Code of Conduct for all our educators with the intention of ensuring that our learners have access to unbiased knowledge. Our learners are at the centre of everything we do. The classroom is not a place to share personal opinions and views as they can wrongly influence them. In the current situation, we were forced to part ways with Karan Sangwan as he was in breach of the Code of Conduct," the co-founder said on August 17.

Mr Sangwan said the situation changed in his favour after he shared information about his termination on August 17 in a messaging group that was leaked on social media and this time lakhs of people supported him. Several politicians questioned the action of Unacademy and if his appeal to vote for an educated candidate was wrong.

Karan Sangwan said that he made a generic statement without naming anyone on his YouTube channel which was not mentioned by Unacademy.

He said that people supported him after information about his termination went out but still no one from Unacademy contacted him.

"I made a statement. You are taking it on yourself when I have not taken any name. Why are you taking it on yourself? I have not said it," he said.

He also criticised the conduct of a news channel, without naming the entity, that his interview was edited to further fan the controversy.
