Cancer prevention: 7 tips to reduce your risk
Concerned about cancer prevention? Take charge by making changes such as eating a healthy diet and getting regular screenings.

How do people lower the chances of getting cancer? There's plenty of advice. But at times, advice from one study goes against the advice from another.

Cancer prevention information continues to develop. However, it's well accepted that lifestyle choices affect the chances of getting cancer.

Consider these lifestyle tips to help prevent cancer.

1. Don't use to***co
Smoking has been linked to many types of cancer, including cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, voice box, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney. Even being around secondhand smoke might increase the risk of lung cancer.

But it's not only smoking that's harmful. Chewing to***co has been linked to cancer of the mouth, throat and pancreas.

Staying away from to***co — or deciding to stop using it — is an important way to help prevent cancer. For help quitting to***co, ask a health care provider about stop-smoking products and other ways of quitting.

2. Eat a healthy diet
Although eating healthy foods can't ensure cancer prevention, it might reduce the risk. Consider the following:

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Base your diet on fruits, vegetables and other foods from plant sources — such as whole grains and beans. Eat lighter and leaner by choosing fewer high-calorie foods. Limit refined sugars and fat from animal sources.
Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all. Alcohol increases the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, colon, lung, kidney and liver. Drinking more increases the risk.
Limit processed meats. Eating processed meat often can slightly increase the risk of certain types of cancer. This news comes from a report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization.
People who eat a Mediterranean diet that includes extra-virgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have a reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses mostly on plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. People who follow the Mediterranean diet choose healthy fats, such as olive oil, over butter. They eat fish instead of red meat.

3. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active
Being at a healthy weight might lower the risk of some types of cancer. These include cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney.

Physical activity counts too. Besides helping control weight, physical activity on its own might lower the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.

Doing any amount of physical activity benefits health. But for the most benefit, strive for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of hard aerobic activity.

You can combine moderate and hard activity. As a general goal, include at least 30 minutes of physical activity in your daily routine. More is better.

4. Protect yourself from the sun
Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer and one of the most preventable. Try these tips:

Avoid midday sun. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest.
Stay in the shade. When outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible. Sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat help too.
Cover your skin. Wear clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Wear a head cover and sunglasses. Wear bright or dark colors. They reflect more of the sun's harmful rays than do pastels or bleached cotton.
Don't skimp on sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, even on cloudy days. Apply a lot of sunscreen. Apply again every two hours, or more often after swimming or sweating.
Don't use tanning beds or sunlamps. These can do as much harm as sunlight.
5. Get vaccinated
Protecting against certain viral infections can help protect against cancer. Talk to a health care provider about getting vaccinated against:

Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can increase the risk of developing liver cancer. Adults at high risk of getting hepatitis B are people who have s*x with more than one partner, people who have one s*xual partner who has s*x with others, and people with s*xually transmitted infections.

Others at high risk are people who inject illegal drugs, men who have s*x with men, and health care or public safety workers who might have contact with infected blood or body fluids.

Human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a s*xually transmitted virus that can lead to cervical cancer and other ge***al cancers as well as squamous cell cancers of the head and neck. The HPV vaccine is recommended for girls and boys ages 11 and 12. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the use of the vaccine Gardasil 9 for males and females ages 9 to 45.
6. Avoid risky behaviors
Another effective cancer prevention tactic is to avoid risky behaviors that can lead to infections that, in turn, might increase the risk of cancer. For example:

Practice safe s*x. Limit the number of s*xual partners and use a condom. The greater the number of s*xual partners in a lifetime, the greater the chances of getting a s*xually transmitted infection, such as HIV or HPV.

People who have HIV or AIDS have a higher risk of cancer of the a**s, liver and lung. HPV is most often associated with cervical cancer, but it might also increase the risk of cancer of the a**s, p***s, throat, v***a and va**na.

Don't share needles. Injecting drugs with shared needles can lead to HIV, as well as hepatitis B and hepatitis C — which can increase the risk of liver cancer. If you're concerned about drug misuse or addiction, seek professional help.

7 signs and symptoms not to ignore
From unexplained weight loss to sudden flashes of light, take note of important symptoms, and know when to seek medical care.

Chest pain, sudden loss of vision or speech, and severe stomach pain need immediate medical attention. But what about more subtle symptoms? It can be hard to know when to seek medical care. Here's a list of seven symptoms that call for attention.

1. Unexplained weight loss
Losing weight without trying may be a sign of a health problem. An unexplained drop in weight could be caused by many conditions. These include overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, depression, liver disease, cancer or disorders that interfere with how your body absorbs nutrients (malabsorption disorders).

If you've lost more than 5% of your body weight during the past 6 to 12 months talk to your health care provider.

2. Persistent or high fever
Fever seems to play a key role in fighting infection. Persistent fever can mean you have an infection, including COVID-19. If you have a fever and other symptoms, such as cough and fatigue, contact your health care provider right away for medical advice. Your health care provider will likely recommend that you get tested for COVID-19. If you have emergency COVID-19 symptoms, such as trouble breathing, seek care immediately. If you need to go to a hospital, call ahead. Then health care providers can take steps to ensure that others aren't exposed.

A fever can also be a symptom of many other infectious diseases, from a urinary tract infection to tuberculosis. Some drugs can cause a fever.

Call your health care provider if your temperature is 103 F (39.4 C) or higher. And call your provider if you've had a fever for more than three days.

3. Shortness of breath
Strenuous exercise, extreme temperatures, obesity and high altitude all can cause shortness of breath. Shortness of breath also could be a sign of another health problem. If you have unexplained shortness of breath, especially if it comes on suddenly and is severe, seek emergency medical care.

Causes for breathlessness might include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia or a blood clot in the lung (pulmonary embolism). Other causes include heart and lung problems. Difficulty breathing can also occur with a panic attack — a sudden episode of intense anxiety that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or clear cause.

4. Unexplained changes in bowel habits
What's considered typical for bowel movements varies widely. Consult your health care provider if you notice unusual or unexplained changes in your bowel movements, such as:

Bloody, black or tarry-colored stools
Persistent diarrhea or constipation
Pain in the stomach that doesn't go away
Changes in bowel habits could be a sign of a bacterial infection — such as campylobacter or salmonella infection — or a viral or parasitic infection. Other possible causes include irritable bowel disease and colon cancer.

5. Confusion or personality changes
Seek medical attention if you have sudden:

Poor thinking skills
Difficulty focusing or paying attention
Behavior changes
These changes could be caused by many problems, such as infection, dehydration, poor nutrition, mental health conditions or drugs.

6. Feeling full after eating very little
If you usually feel full too soon or after eating less than usual, get checked by your health care provider. You might have this feeling, known as early satiety, along with nausea, vomiting, bloating or weight loss. If so, be sure to tell your health care provider about these symptoms as well.

Possible causes of early satiety include gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, and peptic ulcers. In some cases, a more serious problem — such as stomach cancer — could be a factor.

7. Flashes of light
Bright spots or flashes of light can sometimes be a sign of a migraine. In other cases, sudden flashes of light could be a sign of a serious condition in which a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye pulls away from its position (retinal detachment). For most people who use to***co, to***co cravings or smoking urges can be strong. But you can stand up against these cravings.

When you feel an urge to use to***co, keep in mind that even though the urge may be strong, it will likely pass within 5 to 10 minutes whether or not you smoke a cigarette or take a dip of chewing to***co. Each time you resist a to***co craving, you're one step closer to stopping to***co use for good.

Here are 10 ways to help you resist the urge to smoke or use to***co when a craving strikes.

1. Try ni****ne replacement therapy
Ask your health care provider about ni****ne replacement therapy. The options include:

Prescription ni****ne in a nasal spray or inhaler
Ni****ne patches, gum and lozenges you can buy without a prescription
Prescription non-ni****ne stop-smoking drugs such as bupropion (Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, others) and varenicline
Short-acting ni****ne replacement therapies — such as ni****ne gum, lozenges, nasal sprays or inhalers — can help you overcome intense cravings. These short-acting therapies are usually safe to use along with long-acting ni****ne patches or one of the non-ni****ne stop-smoking drugs.

Electronic ci******es (e-ci******es) have had a lot of interest recently as a replacement for smoking traditional ci******es. But e-ci******es haven't proved to be safer or more effective than ni****ne-replacement medications in helping people stop smoking.

2. Avoid triggers
To***co urges are likely to be strongest in the places where you smoked or chewed to***co most often, such as at parties or bars, or at times when you were feeling stressed or sipping coffee. Find out your triggers and have a plan in place to avoid them or get through them without using to***co.

Don't set yourself up for a smoking relapse. If you usually smoked while you talked on the phone, for instance, keep a pen and paper nearby to keep busy with doodling rather than smoking.

3. Delay
If you feel like you're going to give in to your to***co craving, tell yourself that you must first wait 10 more minutes. Then do something to distract yourself during that time. Try going to a public smoke-free zone. These simple tricks may be enough to move you past your to***co craving.

4. Chew on it
Give your mouth something to do to resist a to***co craving. Chew on sugarless gum or hard candy. Or munch on raw carrots, nuts or sunflower seeds — something crunchy and tasty.

5. Don't have 'just one'
You might be tempted to have just one cigarette to satisfy a to***co craving. But don't fool yourself into thinking that you can stop there. More often than not, having just one leads to one more. And you may end up using to***co again.

6. Get physical
Physical activity can help distract you from to***co cravings. Even short bursts of activity — such as running up and down the stairs a few times — can make a to***co craving go away. Get out for a walk or jog.

If you're at home or in the office, try squats, deep knee bends, pushups, running in place, or walking up and down a set of stairs. If you don't like physical activity, try prayer, sewing, woodwork or writing in a journal. Or do chores for distraction, such as cleaning or filing papers.

7. Try relaxation techniques
Smoking may have been your way to deal with stress. Fighting back against a to***co craving can itself be stressful. Take the edge off stress by trying ways to relax, such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, yoga, visualization, massage or listening to calming music.

8. Call for reinforcements
Connect with a family member, friend or support group member for help in your effort to resist a to***co craving. Chat on the phone, go for a walk, share a few laughs, or meet to talk and support each other. Counseling can be helpful too. A free telephone quit line — 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) — provides support and counseling.

9. Go online for support
Join an online stop-smoking program. Or read a quitter's blog and post encouraging thoughts for someone else who might be dealing with to***co cravings. Learn from how others have handled their to***co cravings.

10. Remind yourself of the benefits
Write down or say out loud why you want to stop smoking and resist to***co cravings. These reasons might include:

Feeling better
Getting healthier
Sparing your loved ones from secondhand smoke
Saving money
Keep in mind that trying something to beat the urge to use to***co is always better than doing nothing. And each time you resist a to***co craving, you're one step closer to being to***co-free.
