BTSP EP 38 ⋆ Should You Start a Business With a Friend? 🎧📈 OUT NOW LINK IN BIO ❤️‍🩹
Being freelancers and open-minded creatives, we have all trusted people that maybe we shouldn’t have. Whether it’s wanting to bring a friend up with you in the midst of your own journey, or starting something with a friend from the ground up, only to realize that it’s not feasible to continue with that person and still maintain a successful friendship. This episode is for the people who have tried to make the bold move of starting a business with a friend, only to have it either fail or succeed, and learn from that experience to better evolve yourself. As Omar stated in this episode, if you want something done right, get it done yourself. No one is going to be able to perfectly emulate or realize your specific vision of what you want for your business, often not even another friend. Omar and Kiera are rarely on the same page, and are not an exception to this statement. But what they do have is respect, communication, empathy and passion, which all together lead them to be able to continue to prosper in the growth of this podcast, and prosper in their friendship as well.

BTSP EP 37 ⋆ Laptop or Desktop? New Episode of BTSP 🎧💻 OUT NOW!
Obviously, this conversation entailed that there are two very different weaknesses and strong suits of each type of computer. Laptops are essential for someone who is always working on the go, remote, or simply likes to take their work out of the house. Desktops, however, are extremely useful when it comes to taking on large, detailed projects that require the higher specs and larger disc space and heavy load capability. As usual, Omar and Kiera have very contrasting views on this topic, being that Omar has always preferred working with a desktop computer, and Kiera has been using laptops her whole life, and finds that the portability and amount of space it saves in her space is worth it.
Let us know what you prefer more for your creative projects– using a laptop or desktop? All links below to listen on Spotify, Amazon Music, and more.

BTSP EP 36 ⋆ Mac vs PC🤎🎙 OUT NOW!
Today on BTSP, we are asking you guys and talking amongst ourselves about the age old question — Mac or PC? As most topics go between Omar and I, we definitely have contrasting perspectives on this one. Omar is a huge PC guy, and uses it to run his adobe and other design programs at lightning speed, while I have been using Macs my whole life, and love running and working through lightroom with Mac’s colors. Everyone has their preference, we just loved talking about the reasons why we technically have the preferences that we have in relation to being a freelancer / creative. We hope that someone could relate to one or both sides of this conversation, and leave a comment down below what you think – Mac or PC?

BTSP EP 35 ⋆ Gear Aquisition Syndrome 📻🎙 OUT NOW! Link in bio to watch🤍
What should you do if you have G.A.S. and can’t stop buying new equipment? The term Omar introduces in today’s episode is called G.A.S., which stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Omar explains the difficulty he faces when trying to understand that he doesn’t need all the gear in the world to be able perform at his highest level, which comes from being someone who experiences G.A.S.. Silly, we know. But very real, and misleading, because you definitely do not need the latest and greatest equipment to be able to accomplish a successful gig or project.

BTSP EP 34 ⋆ Following Trends or Creating Your Own Style? OUT NOW🎙🎧
Today’s episode is all about our opinions and perspectives on following popular trends or creating your own style as a freelancer in today’s industry. There are many ways to look at how to achieve growth through social media presence, and whether it matters how, exactly, you do it. Kiera and Omar share their own experiences growing their respective platforms as freelancers, and what they prefer now that they have gone through so many different phases of social media over the years. Tiktok has changed the rules and set a new precedent for short form content, which has taken over the attention spans of everyone who uses it. Not to mention, in relation to the title, how we let that affect the way we go about growing our platforms as creators.

BTSP EP 33 ⋆ Early Bird or Night Owl? OUT NOW🎙🎧
Welcome back to Beyond the Signs Podcast, where Kiera and Omar are delving into the topic of which working system is most efficient - being a night owl, or an early bird? A lot of creatives tend to become night owls, as they find that their creativity sparks, or comes alive, most at night. However, that is not always conducive to a healthy workflow, and the stamina to make that work for the long term. Your body needs the proper hours of sleep, not just the proper amount of sleep. It has been shown that the hours of 10pm-2am are the most important hours of sleep to get to lead the most efficient, healthy life. Which is where Omar comes in to address the pros of being an early bird, which include a happier and calmer demeanor, appreciation for the quiet of the mornings, and being able to have a relaxing morning routine that will set you up for success throughout your day. This, in turn, leads to a clearer mind that can create room and open space for creativity to flow.

BTSP EP 32 ⋆ Natural Lighting or Studio Lighting? 🎧🤍
Today on BTSP, co-hosts Omar and Kiera are talking about their differing opinions on which lighting situation they prefer – natural or studio lighting. Omar takes after artificial lighting for the flexibility it gives him to manipulate the lights to emulate whatever type of environment he’s going for, as well as the advantage of not having to work around the weather to be able to get his work done. Kiera, however, being a portrait & lifestyle photographer, has worked with natural lighting her entire career and photo journey, and enjoys the intention that is behind having to work around nature to be able to produce her art. Both respective preferences are beautiful when used in the right way, to the creative’s best advantage, and can both lead to amazing shots and work.

BTSP EP 31 ⋆ Should You Rent Gear or Just Buy It? 🎙🎧
We’re talking all about whether you should rent your camera gear, or just buy it instead? Kiera and Omar are dissecting the pros and cons of both options when it comes to doing freelance work and really everything media industry related. This conversation goes in depth on their respective opinions, as well as the difference between renting a lens and renting a drone. Which ties back to the episode we recorded right before this one – all about drone photography, as a part of this 2-part series.

Today’s episode gives you guys an in depth perspective as to the behind the scenes of Beyond the Signs. We decided that we wanted to share with our newfound audience how we have gotten to where we are today with our podcast, coming from where we started. Kiera did not know how to edit on Premiere Pro, and Omar did not know anything about the audio side of recording a podcast. Throughout this experience, both co-hosts were taken outside of their comfort zones in trying to learn new skills to make this concept a reality — for themselves and each other. To anyone struggling with making any type of content or being a creative in general — just keep going. Consistency will reward you sooner or later, and if you’re passionate about what you’re doing, that matters and will shine through any hardship. Thank you for all of the support!

BTSP EP 29 ⋆ How to Get Into Drone Photography & Marketing🎙☑️

Today on BTSP, we’re talking all about how to get into drone photography and videography, as well as how to market your drone shots and potentially make $ from them. Omar gives us the rundown on how to get started in the industry of drone photo and video, how to get your drone license, where to sell your footage, and what drone is best for each skill level. It may seem like a daunting thing to jump into, but drone photographers & videographers are highly sought after to provide various productions with extremely well-shot, cinematic and useful shots for their respective projects. Furthermore, if you lack the funding for such expensive equipment or just simply want to try one out without committing to a purchase just yet, renting is a great option that we break down for you in this episode. We hope this was informative and encouraging to anyone interested in making a stake in the drone world.

BTSP EP 28 ⋆ What to Expect When Traveling For a Gig 🎙✈️

From what kind of equipment they bring on travel gigs, to how much equipment and why, this topic highlights a very important part of freelancing that a lot of creatives have differing opinions and preferences on. The value in knowing how to be efficient with your equipment when lugging around heavy gear is exponential when it comes to traveling for work. No one wants to pack a ton of gear that they won’t use during the actual project they are working on, and bring unnecessary items just because they own them and feel the need to use them on every project. Each project is different, and the most amazing outcomes can arise from the least amount of gear, in more instances than you would think.

BTSP Episode 25 ⋆ Mike O’Brien on His Creative Journey, Working with Anees, & More 🎙📻

Special guest Mike O’Brien is a New Jersey born filmmaker and director based in Los Angeles, California, who has built himself up in his career over the past 5+ years as an entrepreneur who is inspired by traveling and taking on new challenges. Using meditation as an important outlet to fuel his creativity, he is constantly pushing past his own limits and is on his way to becoming a notable name in the industry. His most recent project features budding artist Anees, where O’Brien directed and filmed a music video for Anees’ latest release, Leave Me — a video that has over 50,000 views on Youtube in its first 3 days of release, and has been featured on a billboard in Times Square. BTSP Episode 24 ⋆ Covid 2.0 - What Would Us Creatives Do Different? Today on BTSP, Omar and Kiera are discussing the highly controversial topic of Covid-19, and our experiences thru the pandemic. A huge point in this episode is now, with the world the way it is, you never know what could happen, and when the next virus could come along and have us all back to square one, 2020 Covid lockdown days. Looking back on our first experience of such a lockdown and the world shifting the way it did, what did we do (or not do) creatively that we would change if it ever happened again? What practices, habits, and actions would we take to keep our creativity alive during a time like this, if we had to experience something similar again? This topic really made us think and reflect in a healthy way, and we hope any of our listeners feel the same in listening to this episode.

BTSP Episode 21 ⋆ When to Say No to a Gig 🎙 This week on BTSP, Omar and Kiera are discussing the highly controversial topic of when to say no to, or as Omar likes to phrase it, when to refuse a gig. As hungry creatives in today’s industry, a lot of us, especially those who work as freelance creatives, have a hard time saying no to a gig. But there are some key and very important situations in which we’ve found qualify for saying no to a gig. Our hope in talking about this topic is to remind freelancers who are hustling to get to where they want to be, that you don’t have to say yes to every single opportunity just to say yes. Know your worth, and say yes to the opportunities where your client also respects you and recognizes your worth.

BTSP Episode 21 ⋆ Videographer or Filmmaker? In today’s episode of Beyond the Signs, Kiera and Omar are having the interesting conversation of the term videographer vs filmmaker in today’s industry. Which is more common, what are the differences between each, and which one do we prefer? This topic is purely our take on things, and simply invites the conversation to be had, being that titles and terms have shifted slightly with the age of Tiktok, Instagram, and social media in general. That being said, we found that we use different terms and titles to present ones’ self in different environments or situations. Beyond the Signs Podcast ⋆ EP 20 Hunger vs Experience is OUT NOW 🎙 Today on BTSP, Kiera and Omar are discussing their opinions on the pros and cons of having both hunger and experience in today’s industry, and which is more important to succeed. This topic went far beyond measures of success in typical terms – as it deals with a much deeper level of why one creates and is driven to a creative field. Furthermore, what drives them to success in that field. Is it because they were able to get a lot of jobs and are well known for those jobs, or is it because they are simply hungry for whatever comes their way and passionate about their work, regardless of a lengthy resume?

Beyond the Signs Podcast ⋆ EP 19 is OUT NOW 🎙 Co-hosts Omar and Kiera are comparing their experiences with social media, and how the age at which they were exposed to it has affected them in their lives. This topic is an important indicator of the negative effects that social media can have on people, especially young kids who don’t know any different. The age one begins using social media is crucial in understanding how their brain develops into adulthood, or even moreso, how their brain does not develop correctly as a result.

Beyond the Signs Podcast - EP 18 OUT NOW 👁 Should you take a social media hiatus? On this week’s episode, we’re here to tell you that maybe it’s time to take a hiatus from social media platforms to preserve your sanity and mental health. If you struggle with comparison to others, imposter syndrome, putting insane amounts of pressure on yourself that is not realistic to thrive long term, this might be an episode you need to hear. Omar is currently taking an indefinite hiatus from pretty much all social media platforms as well. Everyone has a different relationship with it, but if you are struggling with similar things because of the unhealthiness of it all, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to take a break. Social media has such a hold on us nowadays, all deserve a break and to regain control.

BTSP EP 17 ⋆ Spontaneous vs. Planned Projects 🎙 There is obviously a time and place for each type of project, but speaking in terms of pure passion and peak excitement in what you’re doing, both BTSP co-hosts found that the work they’ve felt most proud of has come out of spontaneous projects with fellow friends and creatives. I mean, that is the derivative of our drive to create art, right? There’s a different energy within the shoots based purely around spontaneity and the beauty of capturing life as it happens.

Welcome back to Episode 16 of Beyond the Signs Podcast 🎙 which is all about comparing the pros and cons of a saturated market, which is the market we are currently in creatively and in the media / entertainment business, a lot because of Tiktok making it so much easier to blow up and be able to have your own following for you to turn into a business. Everyone wants to be a creator nowadays, and whether you’re making your own content or hiring someone else to, there is a higher percentage of people striving to make photography, filmmaking, content creation, their career. Omar and Kiera are talking all about their differing opinions on whether a saturated market is a positive thing, or a negative one.

Welcome back to Beyond the Signs Podcast 🎙 Episode 15 is all about our tips and tricks on how we strive to create a better work / life balance everyday. As Omar stated in this episode, “It’s not like there is one answer. You have to keep updating, and always revising the way you actually do things. But there are tips and tricks you can do to be at your most optimal.” Couldn’t have a better quote that sums up this episode the best. Especially being creators and being our own bosses, it can get really hard to create an on and off switch for thinking about and working on your business and your work.

Beyond the Signs Podcast ⋆ Episode 13 is OUT NOW! ❤️‍🩹🎙This episode features Omar and Kiera comparing the pros and cons of networking in groups or more individually. This topic also ties into the concept of mutually beneficial connections, and where that does and doesn’t work. Group networking ended up winning this conversation between us, with the pro that group networking can lead to finding your people within a bigger group, and then working with those people more individually. Obviously, needless to say, always be careful meeting up with anyone, especially anyone you’re meeting on the internet, which is another reason we concluded that group networking is the best all around.
