"We'll soon be able to ride Bird scooters in the city of Indio"
BIRD SCOOTERS PILOTING PROGRAM IN CITY OF INDIO

Council approves one-year pilot program of up to 300 scooters

The City of Indio and Bird, a leader in environmentally friendly electric transportation, are teaming up to bring shared e-scooters to the city. The eco-friendly transportation option can be activated through Bird’s free mobile phone app, and used to replace gas powered car trips when going to the store, meeting up with friends, exploring the community and much more.
Indio Councilmembers approved a one-year pilot program, with an anticipated launch this spring. The program comes at no cost to the city, and will end on March 2, 2023 unless otherwise extended. The City has the right to end the agreement with 30 days notice.
“We are excited to welcome Bird to the City of Indio,” said Indio Mayor Waymond Fermon. “Whether going to the Farmers Market downtown, seeing some of the city’s new sculptures, commuting to work or school, residents and visitors now have another fun, eco-friendly way to get around.”
“We applaud the City of Indio for their commitment to offering convenient, environmentally friendly and reliable transportation options to residents and visitors,” said Austin Marshburn, Head of City and University Partnerships at Bird.
Bird’s stand-up electric scooters are only allowed on streets, bike lanes and bike paths, and should be parked upright in the ‘furniture zone’ of the sidewalk, beside a bicycle rack or in another area specifically designated for bicycle parking. Additional information about parking and riding in the City of Indio can be found here. Residents can report safety concerns, complaints, or ask questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by contacting Bird Customer Support at [email protected] or via their support line at (866) 205-2442.
Scooters will be located throughout the city, with real-time locations visible in the free Bird app.
To recognize the individuals whose work continues to be so crucial to the health and safety of our communities, Bird offers two free 30-minute rides per day to healthcare workers and emergency personnel. Those who qualify can sign up by emailing a copy of their medical identification card, name and phone number to [email protected].
Founded in 2017 by Travis VanderZanden, Bird is an electric vehicle company dedicated to bringing affordable, environmentally friendly transportation solutions such as e-scooters and e-bikes to communities across the world.

PLANNING FOR A NEW SPORTS PARK IN THE CITY OF INDIO

Indio residents scored a major victory in December when California State Parks awarded the City $8.5 million to build a new sports park on a 31-acre city-owned parcel between Jackson Street, Avenue 44 and Market Street. Indio was one of four Coachella Valley cities to receive funding as part of the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program. Indio submitted an application in March 2021 after an extensive planning and public input process.
Thanks to the grant, plans are now in place to build two baseball, four soccer, one football, and seven open play fields with lighting. In addition, the park will include a lighted parking lot, restroom/concessions building, eight play structures on sports fields, two shade structures, five picnic areas with shade, public art, trees and lighted walking pathways.
“The project will transform vacant land into much needed sports fields and park amenities for the whole community,” said Indio Parks and Facilities Project Coordinator Mike Edgar. “The park has been a long-term dream of the neighborhood, and when it’s done, it will be a real gathering place for residents and visitors.”
The City will now obtain bids for project construction, and hopes to break ground in 2023.

FARMERS MARKET APPROVED FOR DOWNTOWN INDIO

OUTDOOR PUBLIC MARKET TO TAKE PLACE WEEKLY FROM OCTOBER THROUGH MAY, WITH ADDITIONAL INDOOR OPPORTUNITIES JUNE THROUGH SEPTEMBER

A weekly Certified Farmer’s Market could set up in downtown Indio as early as February! On Jan. 19, Indio City Councilmembers unanimously approved an agreement to bring the market to a City owned property just west of City Hall on Towne Street between Bliss and Oasis Streets.
Certified produce, fresh hot and cold chef-prepared foods, artisan crafts such as handmade wood and leather gifts, stationery, soap, jewelry, candles and other crafted items will be sold every Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from October through May. The market will also include live music, and a family friendly atmosphere encouraging relaxation and support of fresh, locally made, farm to table items.

“The Indio farmer’s market is such an exciting project for us, especially as we work to bring additional free events to our residents and the whole community downtown,” said Indio Mayor Waymond Fermon. “This is also a great and central location for people who live across the valley who want to support local entrepreneurs and also see our new sculptures.”

The agreement with established Certified Farmers Market organizer Christiana Green allows for a possible smaller, indoor market during the hotter summer months. Green also runs similar markets in Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells.

“Having a farmers market in Indio will truly be amazing,” added Green. “I have been an Indio resident for eight years, and bringing my community fresh, healthy, locally grown produce and fresh, nutritious foods is an honor to both help the community and give small businesses a platform to support their families.”
The Indio Certified Farmer’s Market is in close proximity to a mixed-use multifamily residential development already approved by the Indio Planning Commission and City Council along Oasis and Bliss Streets, and expected to break ground in summer 2022.
