111. Religion and the MCU

The UK is under an 'invasion' of immigrants and this is probably the cause of everything, but especially the forthcoming electricity blackouts. They probably brought the blackouts with them. Did they cause Liz Truss to get loose with phone security and make the UK the number one target for the bomb?

Meanwhile, the US has no water so a quick geography lesson is required. Bear with us on the discussion about which way the water flows in the Mississippi River.

We go a bit deeper into the Ye situation and learn how deep this goes into connecting Black conservatives, conspiracies about Jewish people and all sorts of fantastical stories about cultures and religion in general.

It's clear Paul has limited knowledge about religious texts but tries his best to make a relevant comparison to a concept he has a better grasp of (which is not saying much).

After a three week break, Paul & Phylecia are back. What did we miss? Well, almost the entire Liz Truss era. Was she set up to fail? Phylecia has a theory.

In this episode, Paul gives a summary of what's happened in the UK. Hold on for the ride - it's fast.

What does having a British Asian prime minister mean for the UK? Does it open the door to the racists? Of course it does. Phlyecia offers some advice for how to handle those that feel compelled to tell you their views at this point.

We talk Kanye West/Ye's viewpoint (spoiler: it ain't pretty) and how he's able to spout his garbage on TV opinion shows. What is a fact? What is not? Are viewers able to tell anymore?

The UK Government (OK, so Liz Truss mainly) is in chaos and people are calling for yet another General Election. Do we want one? Perhaps we need one to prepare for the end of the world, which didn't happen again.

We talk a few conspiracy theories and find out which is Paul's favourite. Phylecia becomes obsessed with 'The Elite'.

And we also have an update on the situation in Ukraine. This is key as we're climbing the Russian podcast charts and it's up to us to spread the truth now.

Hurricane season has arrived with Hurricane Ian (so passive aggressive) battering Florida.

Also battering the whole globe is the British economy and the pound that is in freefall and about to cause a global recession. Go Britain.

Paul is shocked by the price of eggs in the US. It's suddenly more expensive for him to visit.

Our intention is to carry on but, if you watch TikTok, 24 September 2022 is a date for the world to remember. So, just in case this is our last show, please give it a listen.

This week saw the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, with as much pomp and pageantry as the UK could muster to try and keep itself relevant. Hear our analysis of the event, and the incredulity of nearly 5 billion people across the world watching it.

The wait is finally over. Liz Truss has been elected by her party to lead the Conservatives and will become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Not heard of her? You're not alone, apparently. In this episode we talk through the process of how someone not directly voted in to the position can get the top job in UK politics and what leverage she has over the electorate in choosing the fate of her and the UK population.

Paul was on vacay last week so no show thanks for 40 degree heat and lack of infrastructure in the UK. Yep, the world is burning with no water.

A quick update on the news while we were on a break: climate, disease, the usual.

In this episode we discuss how people listen to music. Paul is shocked to learn through his research that people do not listen to whole albums from start to finish, instead just taking the big tracks and leaving the smaller B-side type tracks to wallow in the background.

We talk playlists and the different use of them. Phylecia is building them based on time, Paul seems to create random lists reflecting moods, places, memories.

93. Disease, Guns & Eurovision

Just as one plague looks to subside (except in North Korea), along comes another. Monkey pox has community transmission in the UK. It's not pleasant so don't touch anything or anyone. Oh, and make sure your community towel (?) is changed frequently. We did not expect this podcast to have a focus on cleaning routines, but it's massive on TikTok so we're just on fleek.

Meanwhile, another devastating shooting in the US leaves us wondering whether there's a contradiction in the discussion about protecting life.

The sale of weapons does seem to pay dividends. We analyse the result of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest.

The UK is now a prime target for Russian nukes - YAY! Poor Ireland, though, collateral damage.

Can the world give us a break so we can just do a fun show? At least for a week? Apparently not.

It looks like SCOTUS is about to overturn Roe v Wade. We unpick the ramifications on abortion laws and what this may lead to if other rulings are reviewed and overuled.

That aside, we're covering the latest news in white middle-aged billionaire toys: Twitter. Elon Musk is buying it and people have views. We're talking about the implications for 'free speech' as Musk defines it, and whether that really means hate speech. Or perhaps that he will sort it out.

Covid is over in the US. People are ripping off their masks mid-flight as the news comes in.

Paul gives a partygate update as Boris Johnson apologises 35 times in one parliament session. At least he's a bestie with Zelensky, who is ranking world leaders based on their relative support for Ukraine.

What's that? You want more relevant news? Good, Phylecia has new clothes, ready for her re-emergence into society, like she's in an episode of Bridgerton, which Paul does not hate.

However, Phylecia gets a shock at how the younger generation is communicating. Periods/Full stops are considered aggressive by Gen Z. We investigate the generational differences in spelling, grammar and punctuation.

We have breaking news about Partygate with some official sanctions and fines, including the two most senior people in the British government. We look at what that means and, you guessed it, we become exhausted by it all.

Finally we discuss the wedding of the week between one offspring of a beautiful man. Exhausting in its coverage.

85. Looking the other way

We're a two-time award nominated podcast, as we're a finalist for Best News & Politics Show in the Quill Podcast Awards 2022. Between us, we are manifesting the win.

Ketanji Brown Jackson is the latest nominee for the US Supreme Court. Her confirmation hearing is ongoing so we compare how that's going with Amy Coney Barrett's and Brett Kavanaugh's and the additional poise that seems to be required.

In royal news, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (Wills & Kate) are on a tour of the Caribbean and are being challenged by protests about their visit. Is it time to ditch the concept of The Commonwealth, and what is the difference between 'slavery' and 'human trafficking'?

Humans have a history of being selective in what they choose to see. We look at the acceptance of refugees from Ukraine compared to other war-torn areas of the world and the cosying up to problematic regimes because they have oil. Similarly how, in the UK, teachers, police officers and society looked the other way whilst Child Q was strip searched at school.

Twitter is boring right now, but a question about whether suits are a thing of the past sparks a conversation about what people are wearing when they meet these days - people have seen each other in sweatpants on Zoom for two years. Paul is fixated by make up TikTok and Phylecia demonstrates that she is an expert on the matter.

We catch up on the new wave of Covid: the disease that just won't go away and the situation in Ukraine and the options that are being presented to Presidents Zelensky and Putin.

Finally, this episode nearly didn't happen thanks to daylight savings. We have a quick discussion on the merits of being permanently in summer time.
