*Punjab, J-K Police on high alert as two suspected Pakistani militants enter Pathankot*

Amritsar, June 26: Just 10 days after the Punjab Police raised a high alert, two suspected militants from Pakistan allegedly entered Indian territory and had dinner in a border village.

Now, Punjab and Jammu Police are searching for them.

The development comes ahead of the start of the Amarnath Yatra. Punjab police were already working to secure the Yatra route.

Last night, the police control room in Pathankot received a call from a local resident of Kot Bathian, a village near the international border. The caller claimed that two heavily armed terrorists had forced him at gunpoint to serve them dinner at his farmhouse.

Police raised a high alert in Pathankot and Gurdaspur after this phone call, and now a search operation is underway.

The police had already been on high alert in the region since June 15. Starting June 29, the government will permit Shri Amarnath pilgrims to enter Jammu and Kashmir from Lakhanpur. Prior to this, volunteers who annually set up free langars (community kitchens) for the pilgrims have already started arriving on the pilgrimage route since June 8. Dozens of vehicles carrying langar volunteers arrive daily.

Ten days ago, the Punjab Police issued instructions to increase security in the border areas of Pathankot district, especially near Kathua district, and to conduct 24-hour patrols in coordination with other security agencies. Notably, the Bamiyal area of Pathankot district borders Pakistan, adjacent to Nagri and Kotpunnu in the Hiranagar area of Kathua district.

Similarly, Pathankot police intensified security at the Madhopur checkpoint, located near Lakhanpur in Punjab. Punjab police ensured that every vehicle traveling between Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab passed under strict security surveillance.

There was also a strict police presence at the Sunderchak Chak checkpoint near Kirdiyan Gandyal in Pathankot. Additionally, security was increased on the road connecting Dunera via the Atal Setu bridge, in response to rising terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, so far, the police have not been able to locate the suspected terrorists. The Ravi River forms the boundary with Pakistan, and there have been openings in the iron fence that allowed terrorists to enter Punjab twice in 2015, leading to attacks on a police station in Dinanagar and an airforce base in Pathankot.

The JKNC President also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident and appealed for community-based assistance in helping the fire victims rebuild their lives.

DC inspects Lodgment centres & CSC for Shri Amarnath Ji Yatris at Udhampur

UDHAMPUR, JUNE 25: Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur Saloni Rai along with Additional Deputy Commissioner, Joginder Singh Jasrotia paid visit at various Lodgment centres/Community Sanitary Complexes alongside the National Highway from Jakhani to Kali Mata temple Tikri within the territorial jurisdiction of district Udhampur and enquire about the facilities being put in place for the pilgrims during upcoming Shri Amarnath Ji yatra 2024.

During the visit, the DC inspected various Lodgement centres/CSC and stressed upon the officers to maintain proper and regular cleanliness of these centres so that a best hygienic facilities shall be provided to the pilgrims for their comfortable pilgrimage.

The DC had a detailed review of the available infrastructure and requisite facilities in the designated Lodgment Centres /Community Sanitary Complexes. The DC also enquired about the status of Augmentation of drinking water supply, sanitation, electricity, lodging, availability of bedding capacity etc in the centres. The DC asked the concerned officers to ensure adequate arrangements in these designated Centres.

The DC stated that the District Administration will make all efforts for providing best facilities to the yatris and make provision of other basic amenities also. CEO Municipality, Executive Engineer, PHE, PDD, PWD and Tehsildar Udhampur were directed to ensure fool-proof arrangements of all the basic amenities wherever required well in advance.

Samba/Jammu, June 26: A soldier was seriously injured in an accidental gr***de blast inside a camp in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

The sepoy was handling a training gr***de that exploded in his hand inside the camp at Diyani, they said.

They said the trooper was admitted to the Military Hospital in Samba.

People who used to get bills between Rs 400 to Rs 800 every month have been sent bills of Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 this time.
