Tech giant Apple Computer told the world last week what it thinks about creatives, with its video to promote an iPad, called Crush. Free Form Philly at TAVN Free Form at TAVN.org opens this week with a set of clap backs by KLOUD, Muse, and German metal band Orden Ogan. Acoustic music from worldwide artists, across many genres, follows to highlight the essential value of [real, human] musicians. A teenager was shot and wounded by a homeowner after mistakenly going to the wrong home to pick up his siblings in Kansas City, Missouri, police said Sunday.

Banned music. Analogous to books, art, and thought…there have always been those who think that stifling expression actually works….it never does (you listening FL?) This week, Free Form Philly on myvsradio explores music that was banned on the stage and on radio. Some of these pieces don’t have any words! The notes on the page apparently offended. No backstories are provided in the show - I leave that research to you. I’ll say some songs lead to deaths; others simply offended overly sensitive BBC censors. S*x, birth control, politics, race, religion, are all here.

Of all the collaborations that Burt Bacharach created, the one with Elvis Costello was quite unexpected. Free Form Philly opens tonight with the song Such Unlikely Lovers.…from their deeply satisfying 1990s album. Relationships are further explored by The War and Treaty, Freda Payne, Mumford and Carlisle, and to close the show, my Steven Kunzman. In between, we’ll hear artists as varied as Regina Carter, The Roots, Ally Venable, Hannah Jadagu, Michel Camillo, Tauk, and others.

This is sobering, and should be of concern to all, but particularly to those claiming to be fiscal conservatives:

‘Over the last seven years, 122 separate billion-dollar disasters have killed at least 5,000 people and cost the US more than $1 trillion in damages, [NOAA] said. At the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society this week, where NOAA officials will present their findings, scientists say the fingerprints of climate change are all over these extreme weather disasters.’

The United States was lashed by 18 catastrophic extreme weather and climate disasters last year that cost at least $1 billion each, a new report shows.

This excerpt sums it up: ‘In the new conservative ecosystem, leaders are born of the outrage that drives news coverage on the right and fuels online fund-raising. The new political dynamics distinguish this class of Republican agitators from the self-styled revolutionaries who took control under former Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1994 or the Tea Party lawmakers who clashed with Speaker John Boehner after the party’s 2010 triumph. Those insurgent movements aspired to change the vision of the party. This group of House lawmakers, their Republican critics say, are focused far more on their personal power.’

With no unified agenda or clear leadership, Republicans face the prospect that the anti-establishment fervor that has powered the party in recent years could now devour it.
