Marvel's first acting nomination
A best supporting actress nomination for Angela Bassett's performance in Wakanda Forever would mark the first ever acting nod for a Marvel film.

The first Black Panther movie was nominated for best picture in 2019, and actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been shortlisted for their performances in other films, but not for those in the superhero franchise.

In total, Marvel films have previously scored 19 nominations - but may of these were in technical categories. For example, the original Black Panther won best costume design, production design and original score.

Avatar reflects sequel surge

The 2023 shortlist could see the largest number of sequels ever nominated for best picture in a single year.

The contenders include Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and possibly even Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. That's a lot of colons.

Only two of those would have to be nominated to break the record for most sequels in the same year. However, that's partly because the best picture category is bigger than it used to be - with 10 slots available.

Just eight sequels have been nominated for best picture before, and no two in a single year. Those which have previously made the cut include follow-ups to the Godfather and Lord of the Rings, as well as Toy Story 3 and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Oscar nominations 2023: Top Gun leads sequels surge

Nominations for the 2023 Oscars will be announced later, and it is likely that several Academy records will be broken.

More sequels than ever could be nominated for best picture, thanks to new iterations of Top Gun, Avatar and Black Panther, among others.

There is expected to be a particularly strong showing for Irish films and actors, while Marvel could secure its first ever acting nomination.

Jimmy Kimmel will host this year's ceremony, set to be held on 12 March.

Given their success at precursor events, Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Banshees of Inisherin will likely feature heavily when the nominations are unveiled from 13:30 GMT on Tuesday.

Elvis, Tár, The Fabelmans, All Quiet On The Western Front and The Whale are also predicted to show up. Here are a few things to look out for ahead of the nominations:

The openly gay politician did not mention his marriage to a woman in either of his campaigns, the Beast noted.
His 2022 campaign initially said he was living with his husband and their four dogs on Long Island. That has since been scrubbed.

Another former roommate, Yasser Rabello, told the outlet that Santos always seemed like a “pathological liar” — even sharing old Facebook messages where the congressman claimed he’d landed a job at CNN.

Rabello said he lived with Santos, his sister and their since-deceased mother in a crowded apartment in Jackson Heights in 2013 and 2014 — but “never knew” his roommate was married at the time.

However, the party “never happened” because Vilarva repeatedly rejected Santos’ proposals, he told the outlet.

“He asked me 3x but I didn’t accept it,” Santos’ former lover told the Beast via text message. “There was never a party [or] anything in regards to it,” he said.

Confusingly, the public invite came just two years into Santos’ marriage to Uadla Vieira Santos, a Brazilian woman whom his housemates rarely saw and only knew as “a friend,” according to the Daily Beast.

Former roommate Morey-Parker told The Daily Beast that Santos once “tried to get me to marry some Brazilian woman so she could get citizenship” — saying he could make money from the deal. The report did not elaborate on when that suggestion was made.

George Santos proposed to teen boyfriend while still married to a woman: report

Lying Long Island Rep. George Santos proposed to his then-teenage boyfriend while he was still married to a woman — and five years before he got divorced, according to a report.

“Good evening everyone! As you all may already know Pedro and I have decided to join our toothbrushes! Lol and a very few friends have been selected to share this special moment with us!,” Santos wrote in a 2014 Facebook invite shared with The Daily Beast by Santos’ old roommate, Greg Morey-Parker.

Pedro Vilarva, who was 18 when he met the then-26-year-old future congressman in 2014, also confirmed to the outlet that Santos invited friends to celebrate their engagement in November of that year — even though he never accepted his proposal.

“Thanks for sharing this very important day in our lives,” Santos wrote on Facebook of the planned Nov. 23 celebration at La Bonne Soupe in midtown Manhattan.
