Episode 41 of Anti-Heroes is up now! Zach talks with one of his all-time idols and inspirations, Andy Kerr from NoMeansNo!!! Throughout his career Andy has been very elusive, even going so far as
never crediting his real name on the records he’s played on. Pre-internet, this proved very
tricky for a young Zach to find out who was playing his favorite riffs in one of his favorite
bands, NoMeansNo. Zach finally gets to meet the man behind this inspiring riffage and ask
him “all the questions”. The two discuss Andy’s tenure in NoMeansNo, his preferred guitar
throughout his career and his projects outside of NMN. Andy shares his journey in finding
the right guitar sound and how he stumbled upon his signature distortion by accident. Andy
tells us about his experience in the Canadian punk scene, hips us to the new biography
NoMeansNO: From Obscurity to Oblivion: An Oral History and we get a surprise visit from
the author, Jason Lamb!

In Episode 36 of Cult and Culture, Justin and Luke join their Planet B bandmates Scott Osment (Deaf Club, Glassing) and Kevin Avery (C**s, Buddha Trixie) to talk about the band as a whole. They cover its beginnings, how it operates with what is essentially three drummers (two live drummers and Luke using two MPCs), and the process of writing lyrics for a band that may be too strange for people to get totally comfortable with, having one foot in hip hop and one in punk. With their second full LP, Fiction Prediction, they consider the evolution of the band, the influences driving them, and the differences from one album to the next. They also talk about the visual aesthetics of their performances as well as other memorable performance setups they’ve seen, and their “definitively maximal” sound.

We are so psyched to be a part of another special episode of Liner Notes! . LITA LINER NOTES 💡 Turn on and tune in to the hypnotic vibrations of Hudson River Wind Meditations. Our latest installment of Light in the Attic’s Liner Notes illuminates Lou Reed’s final solo album, one of his most personal musical works. In this episode, we have the honor of speaking with Eddie Stern, the renowned yoga instructor who taught Lou, along with celebrated artist Laurie Anderson, Lou’s longtime partner & wife.

Hudson River Wind Meditations combines Reed’s love of creating drone music with his passion for Tai Chi, yoga, and meditation. The album’s ambient soundscapes have been described as a counterpoint to his intense Metal Machine Music album—but they are similar outliers in Reed’s 40+ year exploration of drone music and feedback harmonics, music created specifically for a certain time and place of mind.

Liner Notes is a co-production of Light in the Attic and Ruinous Media. Edited and Mixed by Chris Duryee and Joe Plummer.

Season 5 debut of Anti-Heroes starts off with a bang with Zach’s “guitartner” and longtime comrade Tim Mcllrath from Rise Against. Zach forces Tim to talk about gear and all the nerdy stuff that usually elicits an (understandable) eyeroll. Even though they have spent most of their days together for 17 years, they don’t ever really talk about their approach together as players, how they divide up parts and what their individual roles are in Rise Against. In discussing how the Rise Against sausage is made, the two learn some things about themselves and their process. We hear what brought Tim to the guitar and how 90’s guitar music shaped his signature approach. This is a true heartfelt conversation with someone
Zach respects and admires deeply. Enjoy!

Hatis Noit is self-taught vocalist and songwriter based in London. Her inspiration and vocal style
ranges from Japanese folk, western classical, Gregorian chanting to Avant-garde, ambient and
pop. In 2018 she released her debut record, Illogical Dance, which was praised not only for its
unique vocal interpretations, but also her moving live performances. Her most recent and
widely acclaimed release, Aura (Erased Tapes) will be re-released on vinyl ahead of her debut
U.S tour this spring. In this episode, Hatis shares the personal story that inspired her to take up
singing as her primary musical expression and why she see’s voice as the most connective
instrument. She tells us why live performance is key to her completing songs and how the
studio setting played a role in the creation and atmosphere of Aura. We hear how Taro
Okamota inspired the high energy piece Jomon, why a visit from a squirrel dug her out of an
artistic low point and we hear a couple magical tunes.

New up with Joseph is a songwriter, a film and TV composer and a multi-instrumentalist based in Toronto, Ontario. He has recorded and collaborated with The War On Drugs, The Operators, Destroyer, DIANA and has released several solo records. His newest record, Welcome To Hell is a concept record directly inspired by the influential 1996 Toy Machine skate video of the same name. This re-imagined soundtrack is a spacious and spacey freeish jazz odyssey that is grounded in ECM sonic textures, late 60’s Miles Davis reverberations and the very now vibes of experimental hip hop. Joseph tells us how Welcome To Hell differs from his previous records and how growing up in rural Canada played a role in the concept. He shares the negative feedback he’s received about the record and how he’s spun it into a positive and a new perspective on art in general. We get proof that Ed Templeton is truly a wonderfully rad dude and Joseph tells us the story of Chad Muska at the Welcome To Hell video premiere. Joe cures Joseph of Covid and we hear a few tunes.

Today on Anti-Heroes! Paul D’Amour! Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, engineer, and
producer. He has recorded and toured extensively with Ministry, Lusk, The Replicants and is a founding member of Tool. Though bass guitar is his main "live' instrument, he sees himself simply as a musician who wants to make interesting art and he'll play any
instrument he can to make that happen. Zach and Paul talk about his solo work, his move to Ministry and why his connection to the band is based in fan-ship as much as
membership. They discuss writing the bass line for Sober, arguably one of the most ubiquitous bass riffs of all time and Paul shares how NOMEANSNO bass player Rob Wright influenced his approach and tone. They have some laughs and hear a few tunes.

This is a special episode for Zach. He gets to sit down with two of his closest friends, Ian MacDougall and Fadi El-Assad from the Riverboat Gamblers. They’ve been through thick and thin; terrible jobs, health scares, successes, failures and all the ups and downs of a tight,
long-time friendship. In this episode, Fadi tells us how his dad taught him guitar basics and how finding punk in North Texas changed everything. Ian shares his experience being
introduced to counterculture music via his parents and how a chance encounter with a rock titan led to a job teching for big bands and eventually playing in one of them. The trio commiserate about their shared experience in a small northern Texas town and how their
paths eventually crossed. We hear a couple RG tunes and have an all-around love fest.

In the latest Cult and Culture pod episode, Luke and talk with Tad Miller, drummer of one of the pioneers of powerviolence, Crossed Out. Tad recounts his beginnings in music in school, playing percussion with power and theatricality in a way that influenced his “caveman” approach to drumming in his band. He also notes the perhaps seemingly unlikely impact on him of genres like prog and funk, as well as his connection to punk over metal. Crossed Out’s formation and subsequent time before calling it quits, as well as its legacy and importance to others is discussed, with the caveat that you can never count out the possibility of their eventual terrifying return.
