The Pontic Greeks, upon their arrival in Greece, reintroduced a long-forgotten Olympian deity, Momos – the god of mockery overthrown by Zeus – through the vibrant tradition of Momogeroi (or Momoeria), a testament to their enduring Greek heritage and ancestral origins. #Θεοφάνεια

The god Momos was the god of mockery, irony, sarcasm, and disapproval. He was represented as holding a stick whose upper end ended in a woman's head.

The Momo(g)eria, a custom of the Twelve Days (from Christmas to Epiphany), because of its similarity to the dithyramb, was associated with the festivals dedicated to Dionysus, with masks and disguises in common. The prevailing theories hold that the Momoegers were either the twelve priests of Momos or the followers of Momos and accompanied him by dancing, singing and satirising persons and situations.

The costumes of the masqueraders, which include masks made of animal skins, goat's tusks, fox tails and rabbit tails, also point to the archaic origin of this particular custom; it is believed that the person wearing the mask is equated with the god to whom the sacred animal belongs.

The content of the performances is generally comic (which in some cases takes on social dimensions), but there are also variations with non-comic content.
The central figure in each performance is the bride, who is often the main character in the show.

The clash of a young man and an old man for its conquest, with the final victory of the younger man, symbolises the replacement of the old time by the new. At the end there is always dancing, singing and a great feast.

Since 2016, the event of the Momoegers (Momoeria) has been listed as a custom in the UNESCO's Intangible Heritage of Humanity. https://www.unesco.org/archives/multimedia/document-4363
