Who is Shaap Records?
Shaap Records is an independent recording label started by John “ANKHLEJOHN” Tucker in memory of his passed friend, Shefu “Prince” Hyde. The passion for cinematography drove Ankh to start what is now home to music as well, with the inspiration of platforms like VICELAND with their visual journalism. The term “Shaap” was referenced to being “sharp” which is a DMV slang meaning “hip” or solely “in the know” in all aspects consciously and unconsciously. Before his passing, Prince was a strong advocate of “staying shaap” to the point where he branded it musically and through aesthetic. Stay Shaap by STP was in the making ready to publish to the world but unfortunately, things took a different turn late 2016. ANKHLEJOHN made the decision to split from the rest of what was left during the time to start his own platform. ANKH has always been a leader with his presence, standing at 5’5 he demands the respect of someone 6’11 300 lbs. Making the investment to learn the craft of production, curation and distribution, ANKH has took the word “Shaap” worldwide with the help of the loyal supporters. Currently, Shaap Records works with DC’s own Rahiem Supreme who has known ANKH since about 2012. Whether a collaboration or solo moves, the two has gained a fast reputation bringing a sound to the DMV that isn't your typical, not even close. Gritty but flashy rhymes, soulful or sinister production; many can agree the refreshment these two has introduced to this area and beyond. Next for Shaap Records is the DJ collective which should be formed end of 2019 beginning of 2020. As far as the music, these guys drop a project almost every month it seems. The work is never ending.
