STOP worrying about how far you still have to go. STOP comparing your progress to others. START enjoying the process. START rewarding the small wins along the way.

Think back to the process of learning your first language as a baby. Did you learn 800 words a day and formulate perfect sentences? No. It was a process over time. A journey. A second language is no different. It takes times and consistent exposure/communication in the language to get it right.

Have a great Saturday everyone!

Reading Wednesday 📚

So I’ve been listening to you all and it seems Reading Wednesday livestreams are the most requested style of posts! I want us to read a book together so in last week’s Q&A I asked for book recommendations. I got a few titles recommended and the general “self help/development” genre was most popular! I’ve chosen three book titles and would like to ask you all to vote oma bo to read with me/the rest of our community together by commenting below and/or voting in my IG story poll. Looking forward to seeing which book wins!

1. Atomic Habits
2. The Chaos Cure
3. The Body Keeps Score

For today’s Monday modern English slang lesson we are looking at the word “ick”.

Usually used in a sentence with a definite article (the) in combination with the verb (to) give.

If you want to say that someone makes you feel uncomfortable or strange, you could “He gives me the ick”. You can use this to refer to people or things you don’t like.

What are your icks?

When someone says “slay!” or “You slayed it!” or “slay the day!” They mean the following things:

Slay (if they say just the word after you’ve said or done something) or “you slayed it”: you kid a great job/you “killed it”/“nailed it”/“crushed it”

Slay the day - have an amazing/“winning” day!

As you can see, this type of slang is not new, simply the word chosen to represent it changes over time.

Did you slay the day today? 😆

Opening a complicated book can be discouraging, especially if it is something you *need* to read rather than *want* to read. My tip for you as you prepare to read something complex: head to a website like Sparknotes (or Google book name + characters) to read up on the main characters before you start reading the book. Sometimes figuring out who is who can be overwhelming and distract you as a reader from the story. Reading about the main characters can also put you in the right mindset and give you a preview of what is to come.

What are you currently reading?

Book recommendation for advanced intermediate through native speakers of English: Macbeth by William Shakespeare

While I could recommend almost any Shakespeare play for Reading Wednesday, I went with Macbeth as it feels truly “Shakespearean” to me.

Macbeth is a tragedy filled with murder and supernatural phenomena. It is beautifully written and known as one of ‘s best plays. You can find many free versions online, check your library or local second hand book options. If those fail, any major online or chain bookstore will have a copy for you!

Have you read it?

Today is Teacher Tony’s birthday!

Though I (as President Ashley 😉) was quite busy, I was able to squeeze in some of his birthday livestream and it was such a touching tribute from his students to him! From sweet Anna’s birthday messages, to Caroline starting an amazing trend of multilingual birthday songs, to Faith’s outstanding ballad and Avery’s heartfelt offer to take him on an easy hiking trail….it was such a great livestream to join (though they’re all great!)

Happy birthday Tony! Thanks for always providing your students and fellow teachers with a positive environment full of interesting insight and belly laughs! You’re the best! Enjoy this special day.
