Hey everyone! We want to update everyone to let you all know that we are taking a bit of a hiatus. We have managed to keep going through some rough patches in the past year but things continue to remain chaotic and we need to make our recording day a day of rest while we figure out how to manage it all.

Here's what's going on:

- Jenni & Marcus took a vacation, which is always a lot to catch up from

- Marcus broke his already broken hand while on vacation, which makes editing the podcast more difficult because it's his mouse clicking hand

- Modest Coffee expanded a great deal in the Midwest and East Coast this summer and all three of us are trying to get into a new rhythm and figure out how to manage the business on this next level

- School starts next week and while you'd think getting rid of the kids for 40 hours a week would be a relief, somehow it just makes life nutso

Any of these alone would be fine to handle but this much all at once is a bit overwhelming. So we are sad to take this little break but we look forward to getting past all this and coming back. We have a whole list of topics we still need to do! Love to you all! -Jenni, Steph, and Marcus

If you haven't caught our most recent 4th of July episode, Uncle Nearest + Jack Daniels Coffee, go and listen to that now, and then listen to the bonus episode we released today where Steph and Marcus try Uncle Nearest and Jack Daniels side by side.

In the main episode, Jenni tells the story of how an enslaved man named Nearest Green took a young Jack Daniel under his wing and taught him everything he knew, and sparked a deep friendship that has lasted for generations between the descendants of Nearest and Jack. It is also the story of how author Fawn Weaver uncovered the story and has brought the legacy of Uncle Nearest back to light in her award winning whiskey company, Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey.

For today's bonus release, we have let you all in on what happens on Patreon. We hope you enjoy our unfiltered opinions!

Ep. 51 Snoop Dogg + INDOxyz Coffee

Is there anything doesn't do? In this episode we learn that there is not. From a precious church going boy, to a turbulent young adult, to a business man with many ventures, Snoop Dogg has made himself a beloved public figure by just being chill.

Snoop has partnered with Michael Riady of .id to bring us INDOxyz coffee. This coffee from Sumatra is described as a "lifestyle coffee brand" and will make you cooler if you drink it, maybe. Listen now to find out what we think of the INDOxyz lifestyle!

Ep. 50 Melitta Bentz, Inventor of the Pour-Over

In this week's episode we talk about Melitta Bentz who invented the pour-over out of desperation for a quality cup of coffee. This new brewing method was instant success and the company grew like crazy, even through economic downturns and two world wars.

The Melitta Group is now a fourth generation family owned business and global enterprise with 1.7 billion dollars in sales and nearly 6000 employees. With divisions across the globe, Melitta Bentz's can't stop won't stop spirit lives in the company today.

New Episode! "Good Foods Awards + Pedestrian Coffee and Goshen Coffee Roasters"

The Good Food Awards winners for 2023 were just announced and so we thought it fitting that Marcus should do an episode about the Good Foods Awards, given his own personal experience with the competition. In this episode, Marcus tells us about the Good Food Awards and the process to become a winner. We also highlight the two coffee roasters from Illinois who won, Pedestrian Coffee and Goshen Coffee Company

Ep. 47 Cheese Flavored Flavor Coffee + History of Cheese

Well, this episode finally happened. After a year of deliberate procrastination we are finally trying cheese flavored coffee. We think most of us will be the first to say it, cheese and coffee do not belong together. Yet somehow this coffee is even more questionable as it doesn't contain real cheese, just "cheese flavored flavor" and jasmine flower buds.

This coffee was created by LLC, the proud distributor of 7,500 weird ass products. This coffee isn't even the most questionable on their website!

We also learn about the history of cheese, how rennet works, and a bit about Icelandic dairy culture.

Thank you to our friend Chris at for this coffee. Bet you never thought we'd actually try it, haha!

Listen to find out what we think. This was more fun than we expected!

Ep. 46 McMenamins of Portland, OR

A friend IRL and friend of the podcast brought us a bag of coffee and we found the company so fascinating that we had to do a full episode.

These guys are into historic preservation and going after whatever crazy ideas they come up with. And they're massively successful at it! They are now maybe one of the largest and most well known businesses in the Portland area.

For the coffee we try their Sabertooth Ethiopian coffee, released for a music festival that they organize. Listen to find out what we think about them and the coffee!

Ep. 44 La Colombe

In this week's episode Marcus tells us all about La Colombe, and especially one of its founders, Todd Carmichael. Todd Carmichael is so much of a true adventurer that they gave him a TV show. From running through the jungles to trekking to the South Pole, this guy somehow did it all while building a multi-million dollar coffee company.

For the tasting, we try their Triple Latte ready to drink coffee. Listen to find out more about , Todd Carmichael, and what Todd and his partner JP are up to now!

Ep. 43 Hebrew Coffee + Happy Purim!

Purim is celebrated this year on March 6, so in honor of Steph's true Jewish ancestry, and Marcus and Jenni's fraction of a percentage Jewish ancestry, we decided to do an episode devoted to the history and celebration of Purim. This episode was a lot of fun! Purim is a holiday to honor Esther and to celebrate bravery and doing what's right with food, drink, and community.

For our coffee, we try .coffee. This company seems to be founded to celebrate Jewish culture and history in a fun way using coffee as their vehicle. Check out their social media pages where they regularly post about notable Jewish people, tell jokes, and teach Yiddish vocabulary.

But how does the coffee stand up? Listen to find out!

Ep. 42 Anodyne Coffee + Democratic Republic of the Congo

In this week's episode, we try Anodyne Coffee from Milwaukee and learn about the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Anodyne Coffee has been a staple of Milwaukee for 25 years. They do a lot from coffee to pizza to music to marathon running. This guy is so into running he ran down and up the Grand Canyon. That gets a hard nope from all of us.

The coffee we try is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region we don't see represented very often in coffee. Steph tells us the very good reasons why, and some other awful stuff. This episode gets a little heavy, but it's impossible to tell a heavy history any other way.

New Episode! "Anodyne Coffee + Democratic Republic of the Congo"

Steph went on vacation to Milwaukee and brought back a bag of Anodyne Coffee. First she tells us the story of the marathon running founder that has built an incredibly successful business in Milwaukee over the last 25 years. Then we discuss problems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, historically and currently and how that affects coffee farmers.

Ep. 41 Pocket Latte + The History of Chocolate

It's our 1 year anniversary! So we are celebrating with , coffee bars made from cocoa butter and coffee that have as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.

Before we try these, we explore the history of chocolate from its roots in the Americas to its rise in popularity in Korea.

Then we discuss the incredible growth of Pocket Latte and the amazing hustle of the founder, who founded this company to give him and mother a more stable life.

Will this ready to eat coffee love up to our hype? Listen to find out what we think!

Ep. 40: The History of the Last Two Weeks

The last two(ish) weeks have been over the top so we decided to change up our format a little so we could discuss on this week's episode. The highs of going viral in a life changing way to the lows of losing a thumb in a life changing way. The last few weeks could not be more extreme or dramatic. We hope you enjoy listening to our insiders' perspective!

During this episode we drank coffee from and it was good! Thank you to friend of the show, Jen, for sending it for us to try!
