So, it is raining today and what better day to address the elephant in the room. It has been, it still is being, and for some people, will always be used against me.
However facts are not being disclosed. Yes, I have two ethics violations from the Broward OIG. Yes, I agreed to settle and paid $150 restitution and a $500 fine. Here is what happened. In 2014, Jan and I were married legally in NY. In FL, it was not legal yet , so we had a fake Florida wedding for our friends and family here. I hired someone to do all the details. She did a great job. I was told, (however, not in writing), that this celebration was in my personal capacity, not my official capacity. First, Jan and I did not want gifts, so we told people if they wanted to, in lieu of gifts to us, could they please donate to our favorite charities, Duck Haven and 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida. That was one violation. Elected officials must fill out paperwork if soliciting for charities. I did not, as I believed it was in my personal capacity. Secondly, a friend gave us the DJ as a wedding gift. I did not know how much it cost him until the OIG started to investigate. It was $150. That was violation number two. An elected official can not accept anything above $50. $100 for the state. As I did not know what was paid I did not fill out the paperwork. Once I did I filed the paperwork with the state. The person was a friend; however, he had two businesses in the CRA district and I was in the CRA board. I was also informed that anyone you meet after you are elected is considered in your official capacity, something that was not ever said at any of the gazillion ethics classes I took. He was NOT, as has been said, a vendor in the city. It states it right in the OIG report that he was not. I asked the OIG if I could tell my commission before it was “leaked to the press”. I knew the night that I told them that the state overruled the ability by charter for a commission to remove another commissioner. However, had one commissioner said that I should be removed, I would have stepped down. None did.
I still to this day am sorry that this was brought onto the city. I understand if you cannot vote for me because of the above. I just want to make sure you are being told the facts.
