Would you go for a hydrogen vehicle in the Philippines assuming an infrastructure already exists to support and produce the fuel?

Outside the lingering question, we sampled a hydrogen combustion engine-powered Toyota Corolla Cross H2 today. It’s part of Toyota’s multi-pathway approach towards carbon neutrality that involves hydrogen, electric vehicles, hybrids, and other powertrain technologies so that no country is left behind in this pursuit.

The engine is from the GR Yaris hot hatch, a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder which has minor modifications to accommodate hydrogen fuel.

Driving feel-wise, it’s no different from a typical gas-powered engine. And this is a GR Yaris engine, so you can only imagine how fast it makes the Corolla Cross H2.

It’s also a lot cleaner, with no CO2 emissions as a result. There’s still a tiny amount of NOx since it’s still a combustion process, but overall, the removal of CO2 makes it a very clean fuel source, tailpipe emissions-wise. Here’s to hoping that the technology gets supported for more innovations to be made in the hydrogen fuel field.
