Why tell sales stories?

There are dozens of reasons why storytelling works amazingly well in sales, and here are the top six.

1. Stories help build strong relationships.

The storytelling almost magically builds trust, which is the foundation of good relationships. It does so by providing a personal, intimate, and perhaps vulnerable glimpse into your world.

2. Storytelling speaks to the part of the brain where decisions are actually made.

Much of the cognitive science in the past two decades tells us that human beings make subconscious, emotional, and sometimes irrational decisions in one place in the brain, and then justify those decisions rationally and logically in another place.

So if you're trying to influence buyers' decisions, using facts and rational arguments alone isn't enough. You need to influence them emotionally and stories are your best vehicle to do that.

3. Stories make it easier for the buyer to remember you, your ideas, and your product.

Many studies show that facts are easier to remember if they're embedded in a story than if they're just given to people on a list.

4. Storytelling actually increases the value of the product you're selling.

In July 2009, journalist Rob Walker and author Josh Glenn conducted a remarkable experiment. They purchased 100 ordinary items from thrift stores and garage sales, a jar of marbles, a meat thermometer, a wooden mallet, a toy pink horse, etc. Each item costs on average $1 and 29 cents.

Then they asked volunteers to write short, fictional stories about each item. Walker and Glen then placed each item for sale on eBay.

But instead of putting a simple description next to the picture of each item, they put only the fictional story that was written for it. And within five months, all 100 items had been sold.

They'd originally paid a total of $128 for the items, but the resale price paid on eBay, a total of $3,612, or a 2,800% increase in value.

In the words of Walker and Glen, their experiment showed that narrative transforms insignificant objects into significant ones.

In other words, stories turn cheap objects into valuable ones.

5. Stories are contagious.

Make a great sales pitch, and it stays in the room where you made it. But when you tell a great story, it can travel around the world and that's useful because you can rarely get all the decision-makers in a room together.

You need your message to spread on its own. It works because a typical sales presentation or memo isn't very exciting. Honestly, when's the last time you heard someone say, "Wow, you'll never believe the PowerPoint presentation I just saw!". Right, probably never. But people say that about a good story all the time.

6. Your buyers actually want more stories from you.

Forrester Research conducted a study in 2013, asking 319 executive-level buyers in North America and Europe, how frequently the salespeople who call on them are prepared in certain ways.

The buyers responded that 62% of the time, the salespeople were knowledgeable about the company and the products they represented. 42% of the time, they were knowledgeable about the buyers' industry, but only 21% of the time, the lowest in the survey, did they have relevant examples or case studies to share. In other words, only one in five sales calls includes enough stories to satisfy the buyer.

Video on social media is the fastest-growing source of online discovery!๐Ÿ”ฅโœ…๏ธ

"Itโ€™s clear that online is here to stay post-pandemic, as it continues to dominate the share of consumersโ€™ discovery journey, with 82% of respondents citing online as their top source to browse and find new products.

This was a slight increase from the 80% share seen
in 2021 and a sizable jump from 73% in 2020. Social media accounts for almost half of online discovery, consisting of image feeds (15%), videos (21%), and messaging (10%).

Importantly, the relevance of video as a social media platform for discovery has grown from 2020 to 2022, at a compounded annual growth rate of 70%."

Here's the continuation of my previous post about some tips on how to not be easily triggered by outside factors around us.

6. What is my reaction/emotion telling me about myself? Sometimes, our reactions/emotions are signals or guides on what we need to fix within ourselves. It could be pointing us to our unresolved issues.

7. Is the situation that causes me to feel this way under my control? Do I have a solution for this?
If it is something that I can control (especially the outcome), then I'll entertain thinking about its workaround, but if not, then let go of the need to control the unknown. The thrill of the unpredictable is part of life's mystery.

8. If today is my last day to live, how would I react to this scenario/word/person? Is it worth spending my remaining time and strength with?

9. What is the best possible way that I can express my thoughts/emotions without having to cause unnecessary pain to other people?

If the process requires that all parties involved have to go through pain, then it is necessary though, as long as the desired best outcome is achieved.

I believe that it all goes back to the intentions behind our actions.

10. If the negative/destructive thought still persists in my mind, I count "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" to interrupt my thought pattern. I do it intentionally several times until my mind diverts to another thought, which is a desirable/good one.

So, there, that's all I can remember for now. I know it's been a stressful couple of years for most people, but we have to remember that there are things that we can control and things that we can't.
Due to what's happening around us for the past few years, it has become more important for us to remind ourselves that we have to consciously choose where we spend our time and energy.
Studies show that our thoughts and emotions affect our body; thus, affecting our health.

When I feel something so strongly or in the onset of being triggered by words, an event, another person, etc. and I want to help myself out of it, especially when I have to work on another thing that is important and urgent, then here are the things that I do or say/ask to myself:

1. I remind myself to inhale and then exhale even before reacting immediately to something so strong that can trigger an undesirable thought/emotion from me.

2. Would this thing/situation that causes me to be upset still matter in my life after 5 years? If not, then it shouldn't affect me negatively for more than 5 minutes.

3. Is this scene/issue a part of my major goals in life? If it is, then I have to go through this if it's necessary to help me become who I want to be, but if it isn't, then there's no use for me to focus on it now.

4. What am I exactly feeling? I have to be specific with how I feel and give it its exact name.
Is it anger? Disappointment? Pain? Insecurity? Fear of what? (etc.) According to experts, giving names to our emotions will help us to somehow observe them outside of us.

It is also important that we acknowledge what we feel instead of just abruptly denying it. Immediately "hiding it under the rug" will increase the probability of that unwanted thought/emotion showing up again in another (most probably unwanted) way.

5. Why do I feel this way? I have to be honest with myself in answering this, to dig deeper if needed. Observing/analyzing our emotions from "a distance" helps us not to be overwhelmed/swallowed by them.

Do you find yourself easily triggered by the things that are happening around you and they affect your mood, your work, or your whole day? Sometimes, you can't even get over those events or emotions for up to a week or more.

Or do you easily get angered or irritated, even with your loved ones, even by the smallest factors? And then you regret having shouted at them? Then one emotion/thought leads to another until you can no longer get them out of your mind?

I understand as I used to be an overthinker and a highly-sensitive person, so I've been there, too.

The common mistake we are making is that sometimes we assume what our customer wants. We believe that the customer will love this and will want that. But after all those efforts, no sales were closed, and no leads were generated. We often blame the products we are selling or the services we are offering but the truth is, we forgot to ask our customers.

May this serve as a reminder that if your business is not going well, message at least 10 people that is in your market and ask them why they are not buying your products. This will surely help you identify what you can improve to provide what they really want.

The Digital Workforce Competitiveness Act lapsed into law last July 30, 2022. It seeks to guarantee the development of the countryโ€™s Digital Workforce by providing Filipinos with better digital skills.

The law will enable the government to enter public-private partnerships with industry experts, IT-BPO associations, private companies, and other stakeholders to plan and implement training, skills development, and certification programs for digital careers. It also aims to leverage the already accelerating growth of the gig economy in the country.

Under the law passage, the Inter-Agency Council for Development and Competitiveness of the Philippine Digital Workforce includes the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) as one of its Council members.
