There is a moment in Jerrod Carmichael’s directorial debut on the Account of three, where the character of comedian Val delivers a line that seems to have easily belonged to one of his stand-up ACTS. Wondering why self-destruction is despised by so many people, Val says: “When you are a child, they tell you that the worst thing in life is resignation. Why? Quitting is incredible.

On the Count of Three, follows longtime best friends Val (Jerrod Carmichael) and Kevin (Christopher Abbott). Each of them is tired of life.

Mother Schmuckers is the first time a Belgian film has performed in the midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Usually this section is a great place to find unsettling horrors and / or twisted dark comedies, and while the directorial duo Harpo & Lenny Guit’s debut film provides both, the problem is that the comedy is, well, horrible. The dream of the 90s lives on in the Little Things, a new serial finisher thriller that is actually far from new. Screenwriter John Lee Hancock wrote the script in the early 1990s, and the finished film comes here in 2021 with its pristine 90s aesthetic. The cars are boxy, there’s no cell phone in sight, and there’s nothing here that you haven’t seen in a dozen other serial finisher thrillers before.

Here is The Little Things, a film that hopes to distance itself from its predecessors by becoming a kind of time game.
