Season 3, Episode 3: Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth
"You get up everyday and you do the work …because you have to have a belief in yourself that there's something really special going on, and it's coming from something bigger than me. That's my belief. I've been at this so long, and I've always done the work, and it's always been worth every moment that I have put into… Something tells me that I'm still doing it because my work is not done yet." Hear from Billy Valentine what what has kept him confident in his path throughout his decades-long career. linktr.ee/songchronicles
Our latest guest Billy Valentine just released a new album Billy Valentine and The Universal Truth which was called "a masterclass in soul interpretation" by Record Collector, and it’s easy to hear why — though he’s recording songs by icons Gil-Scott Heron, Leon Thomas, and Curtis Mayfield, he makes the songs his own. Listen to our conversation to hear about the process behind this powerful record. linktr.ee/songchronicles
🔥 new episode dropping Friday with Billy Valentine and The Universal Truth
Season 3, Episode 2: Michelle Lewis
Songwriters provide an invaluable service creating the soundtracks to our lives — and they deserve to get paid! Listen to our latest episode with songwriter and songwriters' rights advocate Michelle Lewis to hear about the work of Songwriters of North America - SONA to make sure songwriters get paid a fair rate. linktr.ee/songchronicles
What is SONA?
In 2015, Michelle Lewis had a cut on an album that sold millions of copies and yet she was paid a fraction of what her 2005 hit was worth. Learning how much streaming technology had devalued the work of songwriters, she got together with songwriters Shelly Peiken, Pam Sheyne, Kay Hanley, Adam Dorn, Jack Kugell, and attorney Dina LaPolt to form Songwriters of North America - SONA. SONA pushes for changes to legislation like the Music Modernization Act which updated how songwriters are paid mechanicals to reflect the streaming music landscape.
In our latest episode, Michelle breaks down the different sources of revenue for songwriters including mechanicals, performance royalties, publishing, and syncs. Listen wherever you get your podcasts: linktr.ee/songchronicles
