Campaniling is one of UNI’s oldest Homecoming traditions, starting shortly after the construction of the campanile was completed in the ’20s. Despite the near extinction of the tradition in the ’60s, campaniling is still carried out to this day. Every year on the Friday of Homecoming Week, students gather under the campanile, the university’s clock tower. They then wait for the bells to strike midnight.

Decaying houses, abandoned buildings and residual pollution from the Rath Packing Company reflect a troubled history of housing discrimination, economic disparity and segregation in a select number of Waterloo neighborhoods. But students in Professor Jayme Renfro’s Race and Public Policy seminar are seeking to change that – one tree at a time.

“We’re starting small, so we’re not changing the whole area, but we’re changing our little piece of the world in Waterloo,” Olivia Schneider, a student in Renfro’s class said, “It feels really good to get out there and make a difference.”

Sharky’s neighbor, Milkbox Bakery, has sat empty since 2022. That is, until an expanding entrepreneur and UNI alumnus recently began to lease the space. Maddie Palmersheim, owner and operator of Moo’s Bakery, has been on the hunt for a physical storefront since the demand for her 100% plant based baked goods reaches new heights.

Palmersheims’ business has been strictly online-based until she purchased the storefront. She’s been documenting her journey in cleaning and preparing the bakery for a grand opening on the bakery’s TikTok, .

Palmersheim has been interested in this specific building on the Hill for about a year, she said. The white brick, the patio, and the location drew her to desire this lot as Moo’s Bakery, even though she knew the building would need some refreshing. Palmersheim added, “I love college hill, I went to UNI and loved my time there, and this was actually my first choice for a location.”

The Hill is going to be busier than usual April 27, as OneBuzz, a social media company founded by University of Iowa students, is bringing an unofficial bar crawl to UNI.

Over 250 people have already registered according to Brady Stein, a University of Iowa student and one of the founders of OneBuzz.

A portion of their pre-sales will be donated to The Henry Schueler 41 & 9 Foundation, a non-profit which raises money for advancing research to cure pediatric leukemia.

“I was inspired to do this by a personal connection,” Stein said. “We just feel that if people are gonna go out there should also be a good cause behind it, even though, typically alcohol and charity don’t typically really cross over.”

“Bittersweet.”

This was the word that eight of the nine Textiles and Apparel Program (TAPP) students participating in the final catwalk used to describe how they were feeling about the program ending this semester.

A balance between grieving what they’ve built at UNI and celebrating all they’ve accomplished. From graduating seniors to sophomores who are wrapping up their final major courses, the current and predictably final TAPP cohort is a diverse group of students who have come together to strike a unique bond forged over their love for textiles and apparel.

Earlier this academic year, UNI announced that they would not be accepting further students into the program, and have pushed the remaining students through their major coursework in an effort to close the program.

‼️Today in Maucker Union ‼️

A thrifting paradise is coming to campus thanks to UNI students who are working to educate the campus community about the harmful effects of fashion waste.

UNI students Kendall Lienemann, Paige German, Haley Ham and Kate McAlister have been busy folding and organizing hundreds of donated clothes for Revitalize to Rewear’s “Rummage Rampage” which is happening TODAY from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in Maucker Union’s Ballrooms. Shoppers will have the opportunity to fill as many bags as they can with thrifted clothes of their choice for a cost of $5 per bag.

“We have a lot of good items,” Lienemann said. “We have a lot of expensive items that people have donated that they just never wore, we have clothes with tags still on, and some designer clothes as well.”
