We want to talk about an important issue that is impacting students every day: "Lunch shaming," when students who can’t afford to pay for school meals are shunned publicly, and often in front of their peers.
In Alabama, a child was stamped on the arm with “I NEED LUNCH MONEY.” A Utah elementary school unashamedly threw away forty lunches from students with unpaid food bills. In Pennsylvania, an outraged cafeteria worker quit her job after being forced to take a lunch away from a hungry child with an unpaid bill. An employee in Idaho was even fired for refusing to do the same thing. Unfortunately, this is happening more these days—not less.
Food is a basic need. So how is it that some of our children are being denied a chance to eat?

Our new book LUNCH EVERY DAY was inspired by a true story, told to our founder Kathryn Otoshi by an educator friend, Jim Perez. When he was a kid, Jim had been labeled a bully for taking another student’s lunch at school. At the time, it seemed like a better alternative to standing beneath the FREE LUNCH sign and being exposed to lunch shaming. Amazingly, the bullied student’s mother started packing two lunches every day—one for her son, and a second for Jim. That act of kindness changed Jim’s life.

Hello from KO Kids Books, an award-winning publisher of character-building children's books since 2003. For our first post, we'd like to introduce ourselves and share our mission with you—and what better way to do that than by sharing one of our landmark picture books, ONE!
Our mission is to introduce young readers to big issues through the power of stories. In our E.B. White Read Aloud Honor book, ONE, readers meet Blue, a quiet color, who is picked on by Red. The other colors don't like what they see, but what can they do? Until One comes along and shows the other colors that they all count together.
While learning colors and numbers, ONE is also about understanding that you count as a person. Sometimes, it just takes one. 💙
