We are so honored to have all of our Veterans in Holland. In this post I would like to recognize one veteran in particular.

Ronald Benoit has an amazing story of his time in the military. After 42 years of silence veterans who were part of atomic bomb history, were finally able to talk about what they had been through, and finally able to get medical attention for any diseases related to their work in the service.

On Sept 11th, 2023, some of the veterans who lived through that time period, finally got recognized in Washington, with an Atomic Veteran Metal.

Although Ronnie seems to have missed the ceremony, they did list, and mention his name.

We are truly proud to recognize and honor Ronnie Benoit for his service, dedication, and bravery.

From what I understand, this year there will be no Walk of Remembrance. For many years, Dawn Cass Evans and family organized this event. We wanted to offer our thanks the Evans family for honoring those veterans who have passed.

So what can you do this year instead? You can visit local monuments and cemeteries. You can learn history about the nearest local battles fought. You can read In Flanders Fields, learn about the symbolism of the red and purple poppies. Here is one of many links to delve further into the day.

Thank you to our Veterans Agent, Pat Swain, the Holland PD, and volunteers, for placing the flags at the Cemetery last week.

If you think you would be interested in coordinating a walk for next years Walk of Remembrance you might want to talk to someone at Town Hall or the Veterans Agent.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day started in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971 to honor those who served and died in wars.

NOV 14th, 12 PM - a FREE lunch and learn event from Stop Abuse Today, Inc., learn the latest scams while you eat. This event is free to everyone but an RSVP is required.

November 16th - a FREE Thanksgiving lunch for everyone and CITATIONS will be handed out to Veterans who register for the event, or who had come to the Veterans Appreciation event on the 9th.

The heat wave is coming!

Join us anytime the Center is open to cool off, watch movies, play games, have some coffee, bring lunch or use our free wifi. The AC is working so well I don't even realize it's hot out.

As stated in the past, we are fortunate to have 2 lakes accessible for our town so we will not be open extra hours because of the heat. Every time we've done it in the past no one has shown up because they either have air conditioning or live on (or have a friend on) the lake.

If you need us as a cooling station, please contact Outreach or the Holland Community Center, Holland, MA and we will unlock the doors for you.

Please share, and also check on your neighbors. They may not know we can offer help.

Hello Sturbridge,
Do you know any Vets that could use a coat to keep warm this winter? The Sturbridge Police Department recently went to Gillette Stadium and picked up a few coats from the Coats4Vets program to distribute back to those in need. So if you know someone in need, please reach out to us (Facebook messenger or call 508-347-2525 ext 0) and we will get you or someone you know a coat. It does not matter if you live in town or not, this program is meant to help out any veteran in need. As you can see from the picture below we have 7 medium coats, 2, large, 2 Xtra Large and 2 XX Large.
Coats4Vets is made possible through the generous donations from Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation.

How are our veterans doing? This can be a hard time. The isolation can get to anybody. If you know of a veteran, give them a call. If you are a veteran, reach out to others, even if you don't think it will help, it can. Take showers, try to adhere to routines. Please know that we are here for you if you need us!
