The Secret Behind Dixcove (Western Region) Disputes
This is Dixcove, a coastal town in the Western Region of Ghana. The town is dominated by the brightly white Fort Metal Cross, which was built by the British in 1692. Dixcove has a natural harbour that is big enough for small ships.
The people of Dixcove migrated from Edina Eguafo in the Central Region, when a war broke out between the Fantis and the Ashantis. The Fantis were then led by Nana Dekyi. When they reached the coast, they first went to Busua and met the Paramount Chief, Nana Baidoo Bonsoe who directed them to cross the Busua lagoon and settle there (now Dixcove). Nana Baidoo Bonsoe took the most beautiful woman among Nana Dekyi’s people as his wife before offering them the land to settle in.
A man by name Agyeman together with his people from Wassa Benso in the Western Region visited Nana Dekyi and pleaded that he settles them at a place far away from the coast because they were afraid of the sea waves. Nana Dekyi made Nana Agyeman a sub chief. During that same period, war broke out between the people of Dixcove and Busua over where the Fort at Dixcove should be sited. Nana Agyeman and his people supported Dixcove to defeat Busua. Because of the assistance from Nana Agyeman, Nana Dekyi gave the lower part of Dixcove to him and his people to settle there, hence the Lower and Upper Dixcoves. Nana Agyeman’s men chanced on a river which they found to be of help in their salt production, so they named it ‘mfrima’ (literally meaning: we have chanced on a river) but with time, the name corrupted into ‘mfuma’.
Europeans named the place where Nana Dekyi gave them as Dekyi’s Cove which has also over the years corrupted to Dixcove which is usually referred to in Akan as Mfuma.

Many people have asked me my position about the Dixcove Chieftancy dispute because of my relationship with Obrempon Hima Dekyi Xiv and Paa K*m Koomson II , son of Nana Kwesi Agyemam IX, as a young entrepreneur who believes so much in tourism, a youth activist and a member of the Development and Planning sub committee, member of yet to be inaugurated Tourism and Creative Arts sub Committee of Ahanta West Municipal Assembly, a native Ahanta who want to see the progress of Ahanta, I suggest these;
1. After a careful analysis of the whole disputes concerning Lower and Upper Dixcove, even though I initially disagreed with the suggestion of the Minister of Chieftancy and Religious Affairs,MP for Ahanta West, Hon Kojo K*m based on his profession as a Lawyer and his role in the advocacy for respect of rule of law not to focus so much on what the law says.
I have after a careful thought understod his Strategy not to stretch the whole issue as the litigation has been in existence since 1936.
2. Thus, our MP must enforce suggestion of Reginal Security Council(RESEC) of 1987, Selondi, that, because the people of Lower Dixcove are failing to pay attornment to Upper Dixcove as the allodial custodian of Dixcove lands with respect to ownership of Turome, Government should acquire part of Dixcove lands and compensate the Stool of Upper Dixcove as all history indicate that they are the first to occupy the land.
3. After that the Government should hand over that land to the people of Lower Dixcove.
That is simple in resolving this impasse if the Royal family families of both Stools will agree to this.
We have two Paramountcies fighting in a historic Community called Dixcove, Elite who can read and understand, driving over pot holes road, have their festival Kundum hampered by conflicts, can't unite for the progress of Ahanta.
Ahanta deserves better my Lords! Dixcove can do the magic for Ahanta
