LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The man behind Wednesday night's wild and dangerous chase through the streets of Los Angeles and Orange counties has been identified.

According to an update issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, 32-year-old Johnny Anchondo has been named the suspect who led authorities on the pursuit that was heavily viewed by many.

During the chase, Anchondo was seen ramming into sheriff's cruisers, sideswiping cars and stealing multiple vehicles during a desperate attempt to get away.

At one point, Anchondo was seen ditching one stolen vehicle, and bursting into a family's home to try to hide. The family members and their pets were home and fought with him in the driveway - one even brandishing a knife - after he stole the keys to their utility truck. Anchondo smashed through their front gate and took off yet again.

During another dramatic moment, Anchondo was pinned in against a gated driveway by a police vehicle.

Rather than give up at that point, he hit reverse on the stolen vehicle and smashed into the cruiser again and again, eventually creating enough space for him to swing around and flee again.

The entire incident lasted nearly an hour and a half and only ended when the stolen utility truck - at least the third vehicle Anchondo drove during the chase - crashed at a gas station and was rammed by a sheriff's cruiser.

Flames broke out underneath the truck and eventually, deputies opened fire into the vehicle. They finally got Anchondo out by smashing the windows and taking him into custody.

The sheriff's department said deputies used less-than-lethal force when apprehending Anchondo.

According to court records, Anchondo has an extensive criminal history with several convictions in L.A. County for carjacking, reckless evading and joyriding.

In Riverside County, ABC7 found 18 cases filed under his name - two of which are still active and include traffic violations.

Anchondo is currently being held on a parole violation pending further charges.

Eyewitness News reached out to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation for comment and received the following statement.

"As is our policy, we've reached out to the investigating agency before releasing commitment history. At the request of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, because of their ongoing investigation, no information on Johnny Anchondo will be provided at this time."

Meanwhile, a different driver whose car was hit by Anchondo was also detained at the end of the chase.

Adrian Cruz told ABC7 he was on his way home from work, and had his family in the car, when the chaotic scene unfolded in front of him. He then got out of the car because he said he wanted to get out of the way of any possible crossfire.

"It just sounded crazy, like a war zone... so I got out of the car immediately," Cruz said. "I don't want my son and my wife to be a part of that, so as soon as I get out of the car the cops just smash me, start socking me up, smashing me, throwing me in the back, like if I was the dude that stole the car."

Cruz said he was released shortly after.

Eyewitness News reached out to the sheriff's department on why he was detained, but has not heard back.

The innocent victims who had their vehicles stolen by Anchondo are currently having to seek alternate plans for transportation and work.

Damaging Alex Jones texts mistakenly sent to Sandy Hook family’s lawyers

Attorneys for the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones “messed up” and sent to his legal adversaries “every text message” he had written in the past two years – contradicting claims Jones had nothing on his phone pertaining to the deadly Sandy Hook school shooting, which he long maintained was a hoax, it was revealed at his defamation trial on Wednesday.

The revelation surfaced during an exchange in an Austin, Texas, courtroom between Jones and Mark Bankston, a lawyer representing the parents of a six-year-old boy killed in the 2012 attack.

For years, Jones, a bombastic far-right provocateur, ranted to his millions of followers that the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was a hoax, that children were not killed and that parents were “crisis actors” in an elaborate ruse to force gun control. The parents of six-year-old Jesse Lewis are seeking at least $150m (£123m) in a defamation trial brought against the prominent radio host.

Bankston provided to the Infowars host a copy of a text message he received that criticized his platform’s coverage in 2020 of coronavirus and likened it to his false theory that the Sandy Hook killings were fake. This was deeply unfavorable to Jones because he had provided sworn testimony at a deposition that he had no text messages on his phone that referenced the Sandy Hook massacre.

“You did get my text messages?” Jones asked Bankston, while on the witness stand. Chuckling sarcastically, Jones added: “You said you didn’t. Nice trick.”

Bankston replied: “Do you know where I got this? Your attorneys messed up and sent me a digital copy of your entire cellphone, with every text message you’ve sent for the past two years.”

Bankston said he told Jones’s lawyers about the mistake, but they did not take “any steps” to label the texts as privileged, and thereby keep them out of court.

“That is how I know you lied when you said you didn’t have text messages about Sandy Hook,” said Bankston, whose clients are Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, the father and mother of Jesse Lewis, who died in the shooting.

Jones tried to parry by saying he would not have turned his phone over to the attorneys who then inadvertently forwarded the texts to Bankston if he was trying to hide anything.

“If I was mistaken, I was mistaken,” Jones said. “But you’ve got the messages right there.”

Jones mockingly told Bankston he now had his “Perry Mason moment”, referring to the fictional TV attorney who often won cases by getting those he was questioning to confess to wrongdoing on the witness stand.

“You know what perjury is, right?” Bankston said, referring to the crime of lying under oath. “I just want to make sure before we go further.”

Jones said he did but maintained he did not try to hide anything on his phone.

Shortly after the engrossing exchange, Rolling Stone reported that the congressional committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of the former president Donald Trump would subpoena Jones’s texts.

The outlet reported committee members were trying to learn more about any contacts that Jones – the far-right provocateur that he is – may have had with Trump’s team before the riot at the Capitol.

That all made an already damaging day for Jones yet worse. Earlier, Jones conceded he now understood it was foolhardy to dismiss the Sandy Hook killings as false.

“It was … especially since I’ve met the parents,” Jones said during a trial that will determine how much money he owes for defaming the family of Jesse Lewis, one of 20 children and six adults killed at his school in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012.

“It’s 100% real.”

Alex Jones took the stand testifying in his own defense Tuesday. Jones was found liable for defamation in this case by default and is currently on trial to determine what amount of damages he must pay to the parents of a Sandy Hook victim.

Plaintiffs' attorney Mark Bankston told Alex Jones that his attorney messed up and sent him Jones' entire cell phone history. "Did you know that your lawyers messed up and sent me your entire cell phone texting history 12 days ago?" Bankston asked Jones. "You know what perjury is right?"
