“My vote doesn’t matter.” For voters unhappy with KDP and PUK, there are not a lot of other options.

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan Region – “Voting is futile.” “The outcome is predetermined.” “My vote doesn’t matter.” These are phrases heard again and again from voters about the Kurdistan Region’s upcoming parliamentary election. The election has been delayed for two years. It is a delay t...

More than two years ago, an endangered Persian leopard was caught in a trap in Duhok. The injured animal had to have a leg amputated and cannot return to the wild. It has since dropped off the radar of both Baghdad and Erbil, abandoned to a life in a small concrete cage in Duhok Zoo.

“It’s an animal and they have souls… I say it’s better we do something for him,” said vet Dr Sulaiman Tameer.

No quality control on seed imports, water shortages, climate change - the problems facing Kurdistan Region's farmers are many, but they are not insurmountable. The solutions lie in the seeds that are native to this soil and in the traditional knowledge of farmers.

CHAMAKA KHWARU, Kurdistan Region – On a rise overlooking the Greater Zab River sits Chamaka Khwaru’s graveyard. In pro-regime circles, there is a worry that Iran's habit of spewing out fake news may not be enough to satisfy an enraged public.

The level of news manufactured in high places in Tehran as part of a strategy to counter Israel is so widespread that even regime loyalists say it has undermined Iran’s deterrence abilities at a time when the country is under immense pressure. This phenomenon reached a new level following Iran’s...

The Kurdistan Region treads a fine line between its friend the United States and its neighbour Iran and any new crisis could disastrously throw it off balance.

For the best part of the last six decades, Kurds in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Region have dealt directly or indirectly with the United States, Israel, and Iran, under both Mohammad Reza Shah and the current regime. In fact, it was Iranians who acted as a conduit for Kurdish guerrillas to begin rel...

Pressure is mounting on Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to respond to Israel

For Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the revolutionary image of the Islamic Republic is everything. He is renowned for not backing down under international pressure even if that means isolation on the world stage or killing large numbers of Iranians over issues such as the hijab. However, that ...

'There is certainly fear in the air, but no one knows what is going to happen on September 16,' said a Kurdish activist. Iranian authorities are using arrests and threats to instil fear in the people ahead of the anniversary of protests.

A month ahead of the anniversary of the largest threat the Islamic Republic has seen to its regime, Iranian authorities are trying to instill fear in the population by carrying out mass executions, sometimes publicly, arresting activists, lawyers, students, and ordinary citizens, and using threats a...

NEW STORY: Freedom of the press is protected in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region under both federal and regional law, but is frequently ignored in practice by the authorities. With new violations happening all the time, it can be hard to make sense of what incidents may mean in a coherent and useful way. However, a close look at when and where violations occur, what journalists and outlets are targeted, and by whom reveals much about the Region’s highly charged nexus of politics and media. ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Excitement shivered down my spine as I put on my shoes and made my way to the alley where Shahad and I would always play hopscotch together in Baghdad’s Zayouna neighborhood. The sound of our laughter soared in the street as we jumped from one square to another, the win...

A month ago, Iran's IRGC and its militia carried out one of the worst atrocities in its crackdown on widespread protests. Here are the men behind the massacre.

On November 21, the town of Javanrud at the foot of the Zagros mountains in western Iran woke up under a bright blue sky to say farewell to a teenage boy and a teacher who had been killed by state security forces during protests the night before. What they did not know was that the […]

After defeat of the ISIS caliphate, Kurdish filmmaker Hogir Hirori traveled to northeast Syria to document Yazidi efforts to free their women and children held by the militants. His film Sabaya won awards until the New York Times reported the women had not consented to be filmed. The article devastated Hogir Hirori, but questions were raised about how the New York Times did their reporting, how the paper appeared to manipulate sources, turning a simple feud into an international drama.
