CapSU Pontevedra Joins Fisheries and Aquatic Science International Research Colloquium

The event was graced by Dr. Honey Lee E. Casa, Campus Administrator, and Dr. Rey J. Dela Calzada, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Fisheries at Capiz State University (CapSU) Pontevedra, along with the faculty and students from the same university, participated in the recently concluded Fisheries and Aquatic Science International Research Colloquium. The event was held at CAPSU Roxas main campus in the boardroom of the Central Administration building on September 19-20, 2024.
In her welcome message, Dr. Mary Ann B. Martelino, Vice President for External Affairs and Linkages, acknowledged the presence of University President Dr. Efren L. Linan, represented by OIC-Vice President for Research Development and Extension Dr. Leo Andrew B. Biclar, Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Wennie F. Legario, Director of CHED RFO VI Dr. Raul C. Alvarez Jr., Director for International and National Affairs Dr. Marien A. Laureto, Professor Takeshi Tomiyama from the Bioresource Science Program, and Dr. Lawrence M. Liao from the Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Life at Hiroshima University in Japan. She also welcomed other researchers, students, faculty, and staff from various institutions.
The colloquium served as a platform for faculty from the graduate schools of both CAPSU and Hiroshima University. Dr. Martelino emphasized the significant role of research and collaboration in advancing fisheries science, highlighting how innovative research can drive sustainable development and transformative changes within the industry. She added that the event would showcase the power of collaboration and the impact of research in the field of fisheries and aquatic science.
Professor Ianthe Marie P. Benliro and Dr. Harold O. Buenvenida from CAPSU-Pontevedra presented their research titled "Density and Distribution of Black Mussels, Mytella strigata (Hanley, 1843) in Pilar, Capiz, Philippines" and "Mangrove 2.0: Using citizen science to further understand the mangrove ecosystems."
In his synthesis, Dr. Lawrence M. Liao noted that collaboration is a key aspect of the colloquium. He mentioned that the presence of the Japanese group in the Philippines aims to open up opportunities for sharing resources and technology.
Furthermore, this international research colloquium, in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education - Region VI and Hiroshima University in Japan, aims to promote multidisciplinary methods and fortify networks amongst stakeholders while addressing advances in technology, policy, and sustainability in fisheries and aquatic sciences.
