MAY IS SONGWRITERS MONTH
SONGWRITERS: WITH GRATITUDE, WE SALUTE YOU !
Songs predate recorded history, and, the when is always debatable. But in its beginnings, it's doubtful there would have ever been a notion that writing about ex-flames would lead to fame and fortune.
It's a safe bet that popularity and affluence were not on the minds of the earlier writers -- like the Gregorian monks.
"The first song was probably written out of the heart of the composer that was excited about creation," said music historian and gospel artist Wayne Robinson. "First written music was probably Gregorian chant, maybe about 400 or 500 A.D., so that music would be able to be passed down through generations."
Robinson, who grew up in Union, S.C., and resides in Birmingham, Ala., explained.
"Gospel music, which really means good news, has been around since the beginning of time. There are so many multimedia-type production aspects of gospel music, which really is a wonderful thing to help share the word," Robinson said.
Songwriters use their craftsmanship to inspire, educate, vent, entertain and express feelings.
For Hawaiian folk music, storytelling can include chanting and hula to express or communicate a culture rich in tradition.

For more than 40 years, Born has been writing songs. His work has been featured several times on network television.
In 2016, We Too Have a Dream, a song he had written as a salute to Latin American immigrant workers and their families in America was released on the 4th of July. Against the advice of two record label execs to not release the song on the National holiday falling on a Monday, a non-desirable day of the week for releasing music, Born insisted, citing the song's significance to promote compassion and understanding while Americans celebrate with fireworks and cook-outs featuring produce picked by
