Liefde in tijden van Corona, pt. 13: Poing
Ze zullen bij Radio 3 raar opgekeken hebben toen de pluggers langskwamen met een plaatje van Rotterdam Records. Maar het blijkt één van de gateways naar de massa voor de hardcore. Het is Maurice Steenbergen, die in 1992 samen met Danny Scholte als Rotterdam Termination Source de legendarische track Poing opneemt. En hoe simpel de track ook is, de invloed van Poing is niet te overschatten. Het is de eerste echte hardcore plaat die doordringt tot de top 3 van de Nederlandse charts. Poing blijkt zelfs een grote inspiratiebron te zijn voor de producers van 2 Unlimited. Phil de Wilde bevestigde eens dat zonder Poing, No Limit nooit geproduceerd was. Hoe had de muziekwereld er dán uitgezien in de jaren ‘90? Na Poing scoort Rotterdam Termination Source wat bescheidener met een hardcore kerstplaat: Merry X-Mess. Een andere absolute classic van Steenbergens hand is You’ll Never Be Mine onder de naam Armageddon. Een enorme hit als Poing heeft Steenbergen niet meer gescoord, maar dat is dan ook verder nog nooit iemand gelukt met een echte hardcoreplaat. In 1998 heeft hij nog één keer succes met de veelzeggende EP Wasted 5 Years And 2 Ears, waarvan de track Return of Da Source gebaseerd was op Da Hool – Meet Her At The Love Parade. Rotterdam Termination Source bestaat nog steeds en is altijd blijven optreden, al is Steenbergen tegenwoordig een veelgevraagd producent van audiovisuele producties. Hier begon hij al in de jaren ’90 mee: hij maakte onder andere de happy hardcorevideoclips van Paul Elstak. In 2013 verschijnt van zijn hand de documentaire Oldschool Renegades.
