SM Cares Bears of Joy Distributed to Pediatric Patients at Bataan General Hospital

Bataan, Philippines – SM City Bataan, through its annual “Bears of Joy” campaign, brought cheer to the pediatric ward of Bataan General Hospital by distributing cuddly teddy bears to young patients on December 11, 2024. This heartwarming initiative is part of SM Cares’ mission to spread happiness and provide comfort to children undergoing medical treatment.

The “Bears of Joy” campaign, a long-standing holiday tradition of SM Supermalls, encourages mall-goers to participate in a meaningful act of giving. For every pair of teddy bears purchased, one is kept by the buyer, and the other is donated to children in need. This year, the campaign extended its generosity to the pediatric ward of Bataan General Hospital, ensuring that every child received a bear to hug during their stay.

SM City Bataan volunteers together with hospital staff visited the young patients to personally deliver the bears. The atmosphere in the ward was filled with smiles and laughter as children clung to their new cuddly companions.

“Our goal is to bring joy and hope to the children during their recovery journey,” said Ms. Marbie Kaneko, Assistant Mall Manager of SM City Bataan.

How 27,000 SM employees and volunteers create an impact for a waste-free future
Environmental stewardship is more important than ever, and through large-scale coastal cleanup initiatives, communities are rallying together to protect the world's seas and oceans. By partnering with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Local Government Units (LGUs), private sector organizations, and passionate individuals, these efforts continue to inspire thousands of volunteers to take meaningful action, demonstrating the crucial role of collective engagement in preserving marine ecosystems.

Over 155,000 kg of trash are collected in total by volunteers from 16 SM Supermalls nationwide – SM by the BAY, SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown, SM City Tuguegarao, SM City Olongapo Central, SM City Olongapo Downtown, SM City Bataan, SM City La Union, SM City Puerto Princesa, SM City Daet, SM City Sorsogon, SM City Roxas, SM City Legazpi, SM City General Santos, SM City Mindpro, SM City Cebu, and SM Seaside City Cebu.

SM City La Union employees demonstrate their early involvement in making a positive impact for the community from day one.
This year, SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, held quarterly coastal cleanup events that showcased the power of collective action. With the help of more than 27,000 volunteers, including SM employees, mall tenants, affiliates, and individuals from the public, private, and academic sectors, SM Cares collected more than 155,000 kg of waste, underscoring its commitment to tackling marine pollution and protecting aquatic life through community action.

SM Cares collaborates with local government units, private organizations, and communities to ensure the success of its coastal cleanup programs.

Marine pollution remains a pressing global crisis, with millions of tons of waste polluting oceans annually, endangering marine life, ecosystems, and human health. Coastal cleanups play a crucial role in mitigating this problem by removing waste before it spreads further into the seas. Through large-scale coastal cleanup initiatives, SM Cares not only reduces pollution but also raises public awareness about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems and the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

More than 27,000 volunteers from the public, private, and academic sectors participate in this year’s coastal cleanups, highlighting the power of community-driven action.

Beyond cleanup efforts, SM Cares promotes environmental consciousness by empowering communities to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. These coastal cleanups are part of SM Cares' broader Programs on Environment, which focus on promoting sustainable solutions and tackling various environmental issues. With its commitment to creating a Waste-Free Future, SM Cares continues to inspire community-driven actions for a cleaner, healthier planet.

Employee volunteers from SM Seaside Cebu and SM City Cebu sort through collected waste – amplifying the company’s goal of a Waste-Free Future even during coastal cleanup activities.

GMEC, GNPD plant 2,000 mangrove seedlings thru flagship reforestation program OkTREEberfest

Solidifying its commitment to being environmental stewards, AboitizPower subsidiary GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co. (GMEC) and GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. (GNPD) recently completed their annual reforestation initiative, OkTREEberfest, in the province of Bataan last October 3 and 8, 2024.

In partnership with the Local Government Units of Orani and Samal, GMEC and GNPD held back-to-back tree-planting ceremonies at their respective adopted mangrove sites in Bataan to make a meaningful contribution to environmental sustainability while bolstering the resilience of coastal areas.

Branching into Action: GMEC’s Mangrove Reforestation Initiatives Reach New Levels

In June 2023, GMEC signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Provincial Government of Bataan, the Municipality of Orani, and the Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association for the adoption and rehabilitation of the five-hectare mangrove site in Brgy. Kabalutan, Orani, Bataan for a span of five years.

This year, GMEC extended their agreement and decided to adopt another five hectares to help restore a larger area of mangroves in Bataan and transform it into an eco-park, providing a source of sustainable livelihood for the members of Tubo-tubo Fisherfolk and their families.

In line with this, GMEC refocused its annual OkTREEberfest leg by planting mangroves, instead of their usual mountain rehabilitation in the past years. A total of 1,000 mangrove seedlings were planted by 20 volunteer employees and the Tubo-tubo members.

After the successful mangrove planting activity, Joseph Chavez, CSR Program Manager of GMEC - RSM, expressed gratitude to all the volunteers who took time out of their busy work schedules to join the initiative. “Maraming salamat po sa palaging pagsama at patuloy na pagsuporta sa mga programa natin para sa ating mga partners sa Tubo-tubo,” he said.
This was seconded by Kristian San Diego, Environment Programs Supervisor of GMEC - RSM, who also highlighted the importance of OkTREEberfest, both to the environment and the livelihood of the members. “Sana sa susunod ay makita po namin kayo ulit, hintayin lang po natin ang patuloy na development program natin sa area, mas dadami pa po at mas gaganda ang ating mangrove area.”

Growing Green Bonds: GNPD Scholars and Employees Unite for Mangrove Reforestation

This year, GNPD started their mangrove adoption and rehabilitation project at Samal, Bataan, to further support and enhance the environmental landscape of the province of Bataan. This OkTREEberfest leg will also signal the beginning of GNPD’s partnership with the Local Government Unit of Samal in reviving their mangrove areas.

GNPD personnel, LGU representatives, and scholars of GNPD’s College Scholarship Program planted a total of 1,000 mangrove seedlings, making the total planted mangroves 2,000 along with GMEC. The initiative demonstrates GNPD’s efforts in fostering environmental awareness and empowering local youth to contribute actively to conservation projects.

Mangroves play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity, preventing coastal erosion, and providing natural protection against storm surges, making them ideal for the saltwater environments in Samal. This year’s focus species, Avicennia and Sonneratia, were chosen for their adaptability and substantial ecological benefits. Moreover, these species are also the perfect fit for the quality of water and land in Bataan.

OkTREEberfest has now become a tradition in GMEC and GNPD, serving as an annual display of the organization’s drive to uphold environmental sustainability and strengthen community engagement by introducing employee volunteers to its partner communities.

This initiative satisfies the letter P and R of GMEC and GNPD’s CSR DNA, P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S., which stands for Protect Marine Life and Reforest Land. With each seedling that our volunteers plant, we help revitalize the ecological landscape of the province, ensuring that future generations will have a greener, more sustainable planet to live in.

FUJIWHARA EFFECT?
