New podcast episode!

In Luke 24, as Jesus was carried up into Heaven, we read the disciples were filled with great joy.

In these difficult and dark days, it can be hard to find joy. Or many may feel guilty experiencing joy when there are so many people who are hurting and grieving.

A form of worship is through our grief and lament. After we allow ourselves the opportunity to express the weight and distress and burdens we bear, we can experience a moment of “calm delight.”

Joy can be interpreted as a calm delight.

Tune in to this week’s episode to hear how we can cultivate joy even during the darkest times.

New podcast episode!

In John 21, as the disciples had been fishing all night without a catch, Jesus stood at the shore asking if they caught anything. They at the time did not realize it was Jesus.

When Jesus gave them directions, they followed them, and their net was full of fish! It was at this moment, they remembered a familiar experience with Jesus. And then they recognized it was Jesus!

This experience felt familiar and safe to them. They trusted in the person giving them the directions. It was at this moment, John declared, “it is the Lord!”

Tune in to this week’s episode to hear how we can position ourselves for others to say “it is the Lord” when we offer safe, familiar, and loving encounters.

New podcast episode!

Jesus made various appearances after the Resurrection. In Luke 24:13-17, we see where Jesus “came near” to two who were discussing and discouraged.

These two were so engrossed in the conversation about all of the events surrounding the Crucifixion, they were “prevented from recognizing” Jesus.

Tune in to this week’s episode as we consider why they were prevented from recognizing Jesus. Also, we highlight how Jesus drew near to these who were discouraged.

New podcast episode!

The Resurrection took place just as Jesus said! It is a time of celebration and excitement for Christians as we consider all of the promises of Jesus were fulfilled!

However, it might be hard for some to believe the promises of Jesus for themselves personally and specifically.

Some of us can take Jesus at His Word communally. Some of us may struggle to take those words to heart personally due to broken promises, unmet expectations, trauma, and abuse.

Tune in to this week’s episode as we discuss the difficulties in believing in the words of Jesus, “just as He said”, and how the C.H.U.R.C.H can be an instrument of healing for those who have difficulty believing.

Being conscious of Self involves us examining many segments that contribute to the totality of who we are.

The area we are focusing on this week is our values. We want to create margin to examine ourselves deeply.

How do our values influence what we do or don’t do? How do they influence how we treat others?

Tune in to this episode as we pause and ponder about our values. We discuss three questions about values on which we can reflect, contemplate, and journal.

New podcast episode!

Emotional and mental therapy can be difficult and strenuous. The repetitive work of facing the challenges of life is exhausting at times.

Expressive writing and other activities are for the benefit of our mental and emotional health. Some of those benefits can be realized in the short-term. Others may be gained in the long-term.

Be encouraged as we consider the Lord’s mercy and compassion as we engage this oftentimes rigorous work.

Tune in to be reminded of how The Lord is with us and waiting on us!

Expressive writing is a tool that can be used by different people with different life circumstances.

New podcast episode!

Isaiah was instructed in Isaiah 30:8 to write “in their presence.” He was assigned the task of writing on the tablet the poor choices and rebellions of Judah.

And it was to be done “in their presence.”

Judah had to live with reading the accounts of their poor choices, unholy alliances, and lack of prayer and all of the consequences “forever and ever”.

When we journal about our life’s difficulties, our poor choices and ungodly alliances, that record is there “in our presence”.

How do we move forward with the constant reminders of our wrongdoings? We so often prefer to avoid dealing with these negativities.

Tune in to this episode to hear how reviewing these areas we rather avoid can set the stage for us to lessen the emotional impacts and change our behaviors to more positive and godly ones.

God’s mercy and compassion can be experienced in places of habituation and extinction.

New podcast episode!

Research has shown that writing is beneficial when facing difficult life experiences.

It is reported there is a reduction in rumination, a reduction in symptoms of avoidance, and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety.

In this episode, we see where Isaiah was instructed by God “to write it on a tablet”. God wanted Isaiah to write down the rebellious acts of Judah.

God declared the choices they made were not sanctioned by Him. He also pointed out how Judah did not want to hear the messages from the prophets.

Tune in to this episode to see how God pronounced judgment on Judah, and yet offered a word of redemption.

We can find encouragement that as we confess and journal our acts of disobedience, God can meet us with His mercy and compassion in some unique and unknown ways.

New podcast episode!

Journaling has many proven benefits. When we consider journaling as a spiritual discipline, we reap therapeutic benefits also.

When we “write this down”, that is, the problems and situations we have, the worries, fears, anxieties, and the way God has shown Himself to us, we have a record that serves as a reminder.

When we endure difficult times in the future, we can review our writings and be reminded of what God has done before. We can then be assured of God’s presence during our hardships. We can also exchange our fears and anxieties for peace when we review how God showed Himself to us before.

Tune in to this episode to hear how Moses was instructed to “write this down” and the purposes for which his writing were to serve.

Happy New Year!

As we have focused on Mary “treasuring all of the things in her heart”, we take a look at the practice, art, and discipline of journaling as a means to treasure.

We discuss how journaling empowers us to think on ALL of the things, the ups and downs, good and bad.

Journaling also allows us the opportunity to meditate on those things.

As we are considering new disciplines, journaling aids in helping us to process things spiritually and emotionally.

As we enter the new year and begin to process what our needs and goals will be (sometimes I take the month of January to define this as opposed to starting on January 1), consider how journaling might be a beneficial practice.

New podcast episode!

Christmas Day has come and gone. However, before we quickly move away from Christmas, we should take time to pause and thank God for the gift of His promised Son.

We should take the posture as Mary when she “treasured all of the things in her heart and meditated on them.”

We live in such a hurried time that does not make space for us to treasure all the things (the good and the not so good).

However, Mary did. And we should too.

Tune in to this week’s episode. We will discuss how we feel when we realize that just what God spoke to us has come to be.

And how we should create space to treasure the spiritual journey of waiting on the promises of God.

We continue to reflect on Mary’s life on this episode.

After Gabriel reminded Mary to consider Elizabeth who was also carrying a miracle baby, Mary hurried to visit her.

This visit was so monumental that Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and Mary burst forth in praise!

We all need spiritual companionship to equip, encourage, and accompany us through the twists and turns of life.

Let’s not forget - in order for there to be healthy spiritual companions, there must be emotionally healthy individuals.

We continue to reflect on the life of Mary and her process that led to surrender.

Dr. Gadson points out how Gabriel did not abandon Mary or rebuke her for asking questions and experiencing various emotions.

She encourages us to consider allowing ourselves and others the space to process events emotionally and mentally that happen in our lives.

This very well could be the process that aids us in surrendering to the plans God has for our lives.

We are assured that we can express our true emotions even when the Lord is with us. He does not leave us when we are deeply troubled and afraid.

We can also recognize that maybe being in the “Christmas spirit” has less to do with being jovial and more to do with being honest about our emotions.

On today’s episode, Dr. Gadson discusses the various roles in family systems.

During the holidays, many people prepare to gather with families near and far. Some are preparing with excitement and some are preparing with trepidation.

Dr. Gadson discusses how the roles we assumed or the roles thrust upon us may no longer fit who we are. Many times people grow and heal and the old ways no longer serve purpose in their lives.

However, sometimes other family members still expect those old ways and roles to be in full effect.

Listen to this week’s episode to learn about common roles in families, how to move out of those old roles, and how to replace hurting behaviors with healing ones.
