It's been great to learn more about what you do and how you support young people in the borough we call home. The Young Lewisham Project host a tonne of projects to give young people enriching and educational recreational activities. You can find out more about the charity, how to support them and get involved on their website: https://www.younglewisham.org.uk/
We'll leave you with their origin story as it's well worth a read...
In 1974 a group of Lewisham residents were frustrated by the fact that a few of the young people in their neighbourhood were becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and getting into trouble with the police; stealing motorbikes was a big problem.
The residents knew that this behaviour was lagely because the young people had nothing to do. It was then that one of the residents came across a project in Birmingham that had set up a workshop for young people so that, instead of stealing motorbikes, they would do them up. Together the local residents turned one of their garages into a small workshop and encouraged the local youths to come along and learn the basics of mechanics. The Young Lewisham Project was born.
The sun is shining and it's time for another ! 🌞
Today we'll be handing over the reins to
They say...."The Young Lewisham Project provides a safe, inclusive learning environment where young people can maximise their chances of becoming valued members of society. It’s vital that we keep hearing the voices, experiences and creative expression of women
We're back for another Friday !
Today we've got an exciting project to tell you about, and one that's a little different from those you normally see here and that is perfect for the week of ...
Meet Maya, who runs , a not-for-profit platform for female creativity inviting women to share their stories, experiences and perspectives on womanhood via creative mediums such as photography, poetry, illustration and collage.
Maya says: “Women are under-represented in galleries and creative industries, so it is particularly important to offer them creative opportunities and support. Engaging women who don’t necessarily identify as artists and offering them the chance to be displayed in a magazine or gallery boosts their visibility, confidence and experience.”
Check out our stories throughout the day to learn more about the project and how you can get involved! Maya, over to you...
