Does God hate me? No. But why is it so hard to believe that?

Episode 8: Does God Hate Me?

In this episode, we discussed the feelings of neglect that can form in the human heart, and how those feelings manifest themselves in a life balancing doubt and faith.

Quotes from the conversation:

“If you ever question how much God loves you, look to the resurrection of Jesus, look to the cross of Christ because that is how much God loves you. And He will love you to the extent that He would do that so that you don’t have to let your sin keep Him from you.” Wesley

“I saw God as this cosmic policeman who’s looking around every corner, who’s trying to catch you doing something wrong— wait a minute, but if you realize the love of God and the lengths that he went to reach us, to reach me… the Bible says while we were yet in sin, while we were yet turned away from God, while we were yet in our own devices, in our own things, while we were in the mud slopping around, Christ died for us. And that’s the kind of God we serve.” Christopher

What does the Bible say about singleness, and how does it compare to what we hear in our churches and the world?

Episode 7: Swipe Right for Friends

In this episode we discussed being single as Christians, and how the church approaches the topic of marriage.

Quotes from the conversation:

I’ve heard people say to me ‘God has this person in mind that, while He was creating you, He created you for this person. And I just want to say, that’s true— and that person’s name is Jesus. He died on a cross, and rose again from the grave so that we can be with Him forever. Any other person, other than Him, is not someone that you were made for.” Wesley

“If you are a Christian and your relationship is not drawing you closer to the Lord, I think you need to rethink that relationship, your role in it, and your partner’s role in it.” Christopher

Apologies in advance to all people with monocles, modern-day literal tax collectors, and parents of pre-teens who have to give ‘the Talk.’ We hope we didn’t marginalize you and that you feel welcome in this conversation about welcoming people who have been marginalized.

Episode 6: Noticing the Unnoticed

In this episode we discussed the call of the church to be a welcoming place for people who might feel like they don’t belong.

Quotes from the conversation:

“In the church, it’s not just about ‘my pew,’ it’s not just about ‘my space, my spot,’ it’s also a ‘my people.’ I think we can get a ‘my people’ complex at the church, and I think we need to understand the only reason this is ‘my people’ is because it’s God’s people and God has included me.” Wesley

“If Jesus is using us to be a refuge, we need to learn tangible ways to invite the stranger, the other, the marginalized to worship with us. And to me, it seems like the most tangible way is to take an honest interest in people and have compassion on them, and befriend them.” Christopher

How do we learn to love like Jesus loves? Why does God tell us to give and to care for the poor around us? We discuss these questions on this episode!

Episode 5: Rich Kid, Poor Kid

In this episode we discussed the call of the church to care for the poor, and how that call reflects the Gospel.

Quotes from the conversation:

“It can be easy for us to think of prayer as a practice to better ourselves, a practice to form ourselves, a practice to work on the inner parts of us. Giving, I think, is also a spiritual practice.” Wesley

“There is this dichotomy, and I would call it a false dichotomy, between preaching the Gospel and doing works of mercy.” Christopher

Which political party would Jesus join? This question and more get asked on this episode!

Episode 4: The Elephant, the Donkey, and the Lamb

In this episode we discussed how Christians are engaged with the political world, and what it means to be involved in this divisive age.

Quotes from the conversation:

“If it’s a human establishment, it’s not going to be fully on the side of Christ. I mean, we have a church that isn’t fully on the side of Christ. How can we then say the secular government, in any form, is.” Wesley

“What we focus on sometimes, I think, are these good solutions. But there’s a God solution that tends to work even better at transforming whole communities.” Christopher

Episode 3: Lovers Gonna Love

In this episode we discussed the value of building community in the midst of disagreements, how we are called to love one another, and what it means to be Christ-like in our more difficult relationships.

Quotes from the conversation:

“How can our love be known if we’re only loving those who are like us?” Wesley

“Whatever we do, it needs to have this grounding from the love that we’ve first been given [in Christ] as opposed to from our own selfish ambition.” Christopher

The All Things in Common podcast is coming back!

We are planning out new episodes for Season 2 with new topics on how the truth of the Gospel can interact with the world.

In the meantime, we will be posting about each episode from Season 1 for those who haven’t yet had a chance to be part of the conversation.

Episode 2: The Minority Report

In this episode we discussed our own experience of being persons of color in America, how it has affected our perspectives, and how the Gospel might impact their points of view.

Quotes from the conversation:

“If we're going to be community, we as the church are going to value each person, part of that is valuing their cultural history.” Wesley

“I understand [when people] talk about being color blind, but the issue is that the bible doesn't talk about [culture in] that way.” Christopher
