This Memorial Day, let's remember the brave men of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team who put aside their country's hatred of Asians and defended it anyway. Let their legacy inspire us to do the right thing, even when the people we defend don't.

During Arab American Heritage Month, we're celebrating the sweetest invention of all time: the waffle cone!
Have you ever wondered about the origin of waffle cones? Well, here's a fun fact for you: the waffle cone was invented in 1904 by a creative Arab American man named Abe Doumar! An immigrant from Damascus, Syria, Doumar was selling pastries at the World's Fair in St. Louis when he saw a nearby ice cream vendor run out of dishes. So Doumar quickly whipped up a batch of waffles, rolled them into cones, and voila, the waffle cone was born! 🍦

We loved this story from Elisabeth Becker about how, this year, Easter coincides with Passover and Ramadan. Sometimes the world feels overwhelming and sh*tty. Certainly the news coming out of Jerusalem has made us question humanity's arc toward justice. But amidst the hatred is a reminder that we are all human, springing from the same source, striving to overcome the divisions so we may find connection and make the world a better place, together.
Happy Easter, Passover, and Ramadan!

"Because of a combination of factors, including our tumultuous history of apartheid, causing families to be separated and left fatherless, I come from a lineage of matriarchs.
My grandmother & great-aunts were such a gentle yet powerful force, and their intention in affirming their families' worth and personhood in a space where they were inherently stripped of it, has made the generations that follow the fortified unit we are.
Adelaide, Emmah, and Ellah were like a well-oiled machine in how they carried on. The one cared for the other's children as their own; while the other went far and wide to labour and provide for the unit. The way they lived openly, taking in strangers & orphans - making them family, is admirable and so compelling.
Thank God for their strength and resilience, because today we are the generation that reaps the fruits of their love and labour.
I'm so honoured to come from these women, and I celebrate them today."

Happy International Women's Day! On this day we're telling the story of Ouma Katrina, the very last fluent speaker of N|uu, which is the only surviving language of the Tuu cluster of San languages originating in South Africa.
In 1931, the San were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands with the proclamation of the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park. It was in this context that Ouma Katrina was born just two years later. When Ouma Katrina was only a teenager, the 1948 election catapulted the Herenigde Nasionale Party from a small minority party to a commanding position, and the process of institutionalizing apartheid began. The San languages, including N|uu, were derided as “ugly” and forbidden – leading people of San heritage to also begin rejecting them in favor of Afrikaans.
N|uu was even declared extinct in 1973, only to be rediscovered in the late 1990s when a radio appeal turned up dozens of elderly speakers. It was only when it was suggested to her that she teach her language to others that Ouma Katrina established her school at her home called ǂAqe ǁX’oqe (meaning “Gaze at the Stars”) to teach children around her neighborhood how to speak the language. A lack of support has meant the school is currently not operational, but Ouma Katrina remains steadfast in her mission to preserve the language.
“The aim of the school is that we want to hear the language. We also want to see it in books. We want to keep it visible. We’re doing this because it’s a matter of the heart for us,” she says.
She and her granddaughter have partnered with the CALDi - Centre for African Language Diversity at the University of Cape Town to create an orthography to help the children learn.
We salute Ouma Katherine and Claudia Du Plessis for their fierce passion for preserving a rich part of their heritage and culture and we hope you're as inspired as we are!
What aspect of your heritage or culture do you wish to preserve??👇

As we wrap up Black History Month (and all the incredible stories that have been shared thus far), we want to uplift the incredible story of Ronald McNair. Dr. McNair was a astronaut and physicist, and was tragically killed in the Challenger explosion in 1986. He was the second African-American to fly in space, a Karate black belt (winning an AAU Karate gold medal in 1976), a graduate of (along with one of our other Story Givers !) and , and planned to record what would have been the first original piece of music to have been recorded in space.
But the story we want to talk about is the summer day in 1959, when he refused to leave the segregated Lake City Public Library without being allowed to check out his books. After the police and his mother were called, he was finally allowed to borrow his books; the building that housed the library is now named after him.
It would be far too easy to discuss this man's accomplishments without acknowledging the racism and barriers he encountered when he was only 8 years old. May he continue to rest in power and to show us what we're all capable of.
On this last day of Black History Month, who do you want to honor? Let us know in the comments below 👇
