We got hit with some serious weather this week. The kind that closes businesses and cancels school.

Ideally, your business has a back up plan for weeks like this. One that allows you to make money even when your competition has to shut its doors.

The whole reason I preach websites and online marketing is so your business can make you money no matter what.

So if you can’t make it down to your shop, it’s no big deal. You just power up your laptop and type up an email then post something to social, both of which lead customers to your online offers.

Talked to yet another friend and business owner yesterday who’s Facebook was hacked. She lost her entire account - which was connected with to her business. She had to start over from scratch.

But, thankfully, she has a website and an email list and will be reaching out to her followers via email to let them know what happened and how to follow her new Facebook account.

This is precisely why I recommend a website in addition to social media for your business. You own it and have complete control over what happens.

You don’t have to worry about the algorithm changing or the social media gods cancelling your account on a whim. Hackers are much less likely to target your website. And if you work with me, I have plugins and backups in place in case of emergencies.

If you’re doing business, you need a website because it just makes protects you from losing all your contacts and content in one fell swoop.

Plus, it makes it so much easier for people to do business with you.

Hey there, I’m Nina, and this is Simone. (Get it?!?!) I created to help you grow your business … while having FUN.

Because here’s what I’ve learned in 16+ years as a business owner: if I’m doing things I enjoy to grow my business, it GROWS. If I’m doing stuff just because some marketing dude bro said to do it, and I don’t enjoy it, it STAGNATES. True story.

So when I do marketing coaching, not only do I help people figure out who their target audience is and how to reach them better, I also help my clients figure out what works best for THEM.

Because knowing your target audience is essential. And consistency is the key to success. But if you hate everything you’re doing, guess what? You will eventually self sabotage and blame it on all sorts of things, when really you just weren’t having any fun.

That’s why I don’t do cold calls or high pressure sales. They make me feel gross. I’m all about education and an invitation.

It’s why Im not on every social media platform. Instagram is fun for me and I don’t have the bandwidth for much more. I’m on Facebook only because Instagram posts there for me and my target audience is still heavily into the platform.

I’ve grown online businesses AND a local food truck by serving my target audience in a way that’s fun for me. Which has incidentally gotten me lots of clients who I love working with who are very respectful of my boundaries.

🧲 WTF is a lead magnet? Great question.

A lead magnet is a marketing term for a free item or service that is given away for the purpose of gathering contact details.

Here’s more about why you need to identify your target audience to grow your business.

YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL.

Hint: It’s not everyone.

You are not Walmart.

But. Even Walmart doesn’t market to everyone. They know that their ideal audience is all about saving money, much more so than they care about quality.

They could probably describe their ideal customer to you in detail, right down to their name, how many kids they have and the kind of car they drive.

Because they understand that knowing your audience is the key to marketing your business successfully.

When you know your audience, you can then identify specifically how your product or service can help them and you can start speaking their language.

This is what separates you from everybody else.

How does it apply to your business?

Knowing what you know about your audience, you can now figure out your marketing plan because you have a better idea of:
✨Where they hang out on social media.
✨What kind of content they’re looking for
✨Which hashtags and keywords to use
✨A better way to position your offerings so they are interested
✨How you can help them better and build a relationship

Because that’s what marketing really is - building a relationship. Establishing trust. Putting in this effort shows that you actually care about the people you serve. It’s what keeps them coming back and telling their friends about you.

So just what is a target audience? You could also call it your ideal customer or client. But this is the person/group you are trying to reach and convert into a paying customer.

And for the love of all that is holy, don’t say it’s everyone. Because there’s no possible way that you can be serving everyone.

Your business, whether you like it, or not, has a certain demographic that will benefit from it the most. And once you recognize who that is, then you can find them so much easier.

Because it is impossible to find something if you don’t even know what you are looking for.

So how do you figure out who your target audience is? Well, what problem is your business solving? Who is most likely to buy your product or service?

If you have a skin care business and offer neurotoxins as a way to help your clients achieve a smooth, timeless look, you are likely working with women in say their mid-40s, who work in professional careers and have disposable income to spend on that kind of service. You are not likely to be working with 30 year old diesel mechanics who wash their faces with generic soap.

Duh, right? It’s so obvious. But there are way too many business owners out there who never take this crucial step that will help them grow their business.

When you know who your target audience is, then you can formulate a plan for finding them and speaking to them in a way that lets them know that you can help.

Your email list is a valuable tool that lets you connect with the people who have already said yes to your business in some way:

I used to boycott Black Friday back in my hardcore minimalist days. Before that, I'd be up at 4 am, trekking south to the nearest big box stores to score some big deals.

Working on a website for this super cool tattoo shop right now and I have a few more openings if you have a business and you don’t have a site yet.

Because you need one, my friends. Most of the people I work with just need one of my Tiny Sites to let potential customers know the basic info. My restaurant clients add a menu page. Gold Star Tattoo is adding a page for aftercare instructions, which will highlight a special product (brilliant).

Twenty years ago, most businesses didn’t have a website, and they did fine with traditional forms of marketing (if they marketed). Today, though, a website is a must if you’re in business. But why?

1. So people can scope out your business before they go check it out. This is especially true for us introverts and anyone born when the Internet was a common thing. Your website makes it super easy for people to find out when you’re open, what you offer and who you are. If people can’t find your information online, they will go somewhere that has the information online.
2. It allows you to collect leads. One of the most crucial part of doing business successfully is build an email list of customers and potential customers. Your website it the perfect place to capture that information.
3. You own it. Social media is a great marketing tool, but you don’t own it. That means that you could go to login one day and find you’ve been hacked. Or that you said something that upset the Meta gods and they locked you out. Or they can change their algorithm (as they often do), and none of your posts get seen unless you pay to have them boosted.

If you need a website and aren’t into the hassle of learning how to DIY it, I’ve got a couple options. One is a Tiny Site, a one or two page site that has all the basic information you need. The second is a full website that can have as many pages as you want.
