MAN SETS 215 HOURS READ ALOUD RECORD IN OSUN STSTE

Friends and supporters of ex-student of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State, Samson Ajao, who was attempting to set a new world record for longest marathon reading aloud on Wednesday, was celebrated on the streets of Osogbo after he hit 215 hours to set a new world record.

The convoy that conveyed Ajao and his supporters moved through Gbongan/Osogbo road and Odi-Olowo Street in Osogbo in celebration after he achieved the feat.

Ajao, who started read-a-thon on Monday, May 6, in Osogbo, Osun State aimed to beat the current Guinness World Record holder, Rybai Isakov who held the record of 124 hours of marathon reading aloud.

Shortly after he commenced the challenge, many notable personalities and Osun State Government officials, paid him a solidarity visit.

Among the dignitaries that visited Ajao were the wife of Osun State Governor, Mrs Ngozi Adeleke, the Speaker of Osun House of Assembly, Mr. Adewale Egbedun, and Commissioner for Education, Mr. Dipo Eluwole.

“We have seen people, especially students coming around bringing books to the venue of the programme and they were happy to celebrate with us. I believe that I have inspired people and it would go a long way. I read about 100 books over 10 days for a total of 215 hours.”

TINUBU SUSPENDS IMPLEMENTATION OF CYBER SECURITY LEVY

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria to suspend the implementation of the 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy in response to public backlash and opposition following its announcement.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed the suspension of the levy on Tuesday.

Idris stated that President Tinubu has directed the CBN to temporarily halt the enforcement of the 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy and to review the methods for its application.

Members of the House of Representatives last Thursday asked the CBN to withdraw the circular directing financial institutions to commence implementation of the 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy, describing it as “ambiguous”.

ADEMOLA LOOKMAN IS MAKING A MARK

A resident of Palosco, a district in Bergamo, where Atalanta is based has named his child after Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, following his goal for the club in their 3-0 bashing of Olympique Marseille on Thursday.

Nigeria star Lookman is fast becoming a hero at Atalanta since his transfer €9.35 million transfer from RB Leipzig two summers ago.

The 26-year-old forward was just coming off an average campaign with Leicester City, who got relegated at the time, and not much was expected of him. However, Lookman has proved his doubters wrong and has become one of Gian Pero Gasperini’s trusted lieutenants.

The former Everton man has been in brilliant form recently, and he continued with his run on Thursday, scoring the opener and assisting the second for Atalanta in their 3-0 win over Marseille in the second leg of the Europa League semifinals at the Gewiss Stadium. The win ensured that Atalanta qualified for the Europa League final – their first-ever European final.

Following his feat, reports from Eurofoot indicate that an Atalanta fan has named a child after Lookman.

It is not the first time that European fans will show their love for Nigerian players. In Naples, many Napoli fans have showed their love for Victor Osimhen by wearing masks like him.

Also, Jay-Jay Okocha made a mark in his days, with former Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil mentioning him as the inspiration behind his decision to play football.

Atalanta will play Bayer Leverkusen in the final of the Europa League on May 22.

Nigerian-American teenager, Ashley Adirika wins $4m scholarship to study at Harvard University

A 17-year-old Nigerian-American girl, Ashley Adirika has won a $4 million scholarship to study at the Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.

Adirika’s outstanding academic performances earned her the privilege to apply to the Ivy League universities in the US.

Graduated from the Miami Beach Senior High School, Florida, US, Ashley Adirika has always dreamt of going to study at an Ivy League University

When she opened her computer to check all her applications on Ivy Day, she was amazed to find out that all the Ivy League universities accepted and offered a scholarship, according to Scholarship Region news.

The schools included Brown University, Columbia University, Dartmouth University, Harvard University, Penn University, Princeton University, and Yale University.

Revealing her wild excitement, Adirika also said she received acceptance letters from Stanford University, Vanderbilt University, and Emory University.

“I just decided to shoot my shot at all of them and see if it would land. And I had no idea I would get accepted into all of them. On Ivy Day, I remember crying a lot and just being extremely surprised,” Ashely told CNN.

According to reports, the likelihood of being admitted to one of the elite universities ranges between three and eight percent.

Since 2018, the US most exclusive schools have accepted less than 12% of their applicants. In 2022, Yale took 4.5%, Columbia welcomed 3.7%, and Harvard greeted just 3.2% of its future pupils, the smallest number ever in the university’s history, according to CNN.

Along with her streak of stellar grades, Adirika is known as a force when it comes to speech and debate.

“But more than anything, it just gave me the platform to talk about things that I believed in and talk about things that were important to me. And so that is something that I am just forever indebted to Carol City for introducing me to that platform.”

Starting in middle school, her skills were exemplary of what the future held in store for her.

“Everybody knew Ashley because of how smart she was,” Carol City Middle School teacher Bess Rodriguez shared.

“She had test scores through the roof; she’s involved in all different activities. So I recruited her, and she had never debated before,” Rodriguez added.

NFF appoints Finidi George as Head Coach of Super Eagles

The Board of Nigeria Football Federation on Monday approved the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee to appoint former ace winger Finidi George as Head Coach of the Senior Men National Football Team, Super Eagles.

George, who spent 20 months as assistant to José Santos Peseiro before the Portuguese voluntarily left the post following the accomplishment of Africa Cup of Nations runner-up position at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, took charge of the squad in interim capacity during two friendly matches in Morocco last month.

His squad edged Ghana 2-1 in the first match, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars, but then lost 0-2 to Mali in the second game.

George, a member of the so-styled ‘Golden Generation’ that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Tunisia and emerged the second most entertaining team in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup finals in USA the same year, won 62 caps for Nigeria, including featuring at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals. He also won gold, silver and bronze medals from the 1992, 1994, 2000 and 2002 AFCON tournaments.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Real Betis (Spain) forward, who made a scoring debut for fatherland in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium, Lagos on 27th July 1991, also featured for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in the domestic scene before heading to Europe. He assisted Rashidi Yekini (of blessed memory) to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA on 19th June 1994.

George had actually scored the goal that took Nigeria to that FIFA World Cup debut, when he put Nigeria ahead against hosts Algeria in a crucial qualifier in Algiers on 8th October 1993. The match eventually ended 1-1 and earned Nigeria a ticket to the finals in America.

George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan respectively, in a little over five weeks.

The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging behind in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.

Clark in an open letter to the president where he raised some issues relating to infrastructural development of the Niger Delta region, and the country at large, said when completed the project will change the landscape of infrastructural development in Nigeria.

He however asked the president to particularly pay more attention to projects in the Niger Delta area.

He stated: “I congratulate you, your Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, David Umahi, for the recent award of the coastal road which will stretch from Lagos State down to Calabar, Cross River State.

“This is a landmark project which if completed, will change the landscape of infrastructural development in Nigeria. It is particularly pleasing to note that this project is being executed as a Public/Private Partnership (PPP). This means that a substantial portion of the funding, which is over ₦1trillion, will be coming from the private sector.

“I assure you that we will not only endorse this project but will fully extend our support to ensure its completion, especially at the areas of the Niger Delta where it will pass through.”

He added: “Like Oliver Twist, the Niger Delta people are seriously requesting Mr President to give priority to the very important project which will no doubt cater for the security and welfare of our people having regards to the role of the region in supporting the economy of the entire country.

“The Coastal Road, therefore, could not be a substitution for our immediate requirement. It is estimated that the portion being constructed by the contractor from the Lagos end may take at least two years to complete before moving to the second phase.”

He also called for the completion of the unending East-West road, the coastal rail project from Lagos to Calabar.

The Elderstateman also called the attention of President Tinubu to the Warri-Itakpe-Lokoja-Abuja railway line which currently terminates in Lokoja.

Clark said the government should ensure it completion of the Lokoja -Abuja axis.

Also, the president in the letter was asked about Calabar-Itu Road; Benin-Sapele-Warri Road and Bodo-Bonny Road project.

He assured the president that the projects would be signature projects if he could complete them.

“Finally, it is at this juncture I want to urge you Mr. President, to use your authority and stamp your name in gold by completing these priority roads and making it a thing of the past. This also has a moral implication because this is where the wealth of the country i.e. Money from oil comes from and it is a matter of equity and fairness that we have a good road on which people can pass.

“Once more, Mr. President, I want to assure you that on such a noble effort, you can count on my support and that of the entire people of the south-south.”

16-YEAR-OLD DEEPERLIFE HIGH SCHOOL GIRL, NKECHINYERE, EMERGES JAMB OVER ALL BEST STUDENT IN 2023

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Nkechinyere Kamsiyochukwu Umeh. I am from Anambra State. I attend Deeper Life High School, Mowe, Ogun State. I am a science student in SSS 3 and I am 16 years old. I am from a family of four children and I am the first child.

You’re in SS3, you mean you wrote the UTME as a student?

Yes. My school organised everything for us. My classmates and I were registered by our school and we wrote the exam between the second and third term break.

What’s your impression about the UTME, is it a difficult exam?

No, I don’t think so. It’s not so difficult. It’s just a matter of how you prepare. It is about how hard you read, how many questions you solved. It’s not a really difficult exam.

How did you prepare?

My school was highly involved in our preparation for the exam. We were given a series of tests and classes; our teachers drilled us. There was also an app, called Test Driller, which the school distributed to all students. It had different UTME past questions and you can take a mock exam. I also practised on my own. My school always encouraged us to persevere and that it would soon be over.

How long did the preparation take?

We started preparation immediately after we entered SSS3. This was when we started receiving pep talks on the exam; the school organised special UTME classes for us.

How did you feel when you saw your scores?

When it was announced that JAMB had released the result, I was in school and I went to meet my counsellor. I also called my parents to check for me. When I called them that day, my mum told me the result. My parents were excited. I particularly could not contain my joy. I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs; I was incredibly excited.

What does it feel like to be the candidate with the highest UTME score?

I almost could not believe it. I was really happy.

What are the secrets of your academic feat?

First, I give the glory to God, who made this a possibility. Aside from this, I also practised a lot of past questions to familiarise myself with the kind of questions JAMB could bring out. I also read my textbooks and then, I paid attention when the teachers took us through classes. In summary, I’ll say there is the God factor, which is key. Then my teachers, who made a lot of sacrifices for this to happen.

There is also a high level of discipline in my school, which removes things that may act as inhibitors to our success. My school frowns on exam malpractices; the management really stands against it. Any student caught cheating is expelled. So, this instils in us a culture of discipline, not depending on shortcuts to our success.

What role did your parents play in all of this?

My parents were there for me while I was preparing. Though I am a boarder, they always called me every weekend to give me words of encouragement. And whenever the school was opened for visitation, they never missed the opportunity to see me and encourage me to work harder.

What school did you apply to and what’s your course of study?

I applied to study Chemical Engineering at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Why that course?

For starters, I have always been a lover of Chemistry. I scored 99 in Chemistry, which is my highest. It is my best subject. In Mathematics, I scored 98. Then the idea of working in an industry or a factory appeals to me; I want to do something in the line of engineering.

Who are your role models?

My major role model is the proprietor of my school, Pastor (Dr) W.F. Kumuyi. I also look up to Dr Ben Carson.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years from now?

In 10 years from now, I see myself as a graduate and I must have completed my master’s and PhD. I see myself as very successful by the grace of God. I intend to do my master’s and PhD abroad.

For a 16-year-old teenager like you, this is no mean feat. What stands you out?

Hard work, diligence and support from my family

What advice do you have for students hoping to achieve this kind of feat?

I want to advise them to work hard and start preparing early because it is always good to start on time. They must avoid anything that can distract them. They should also not look for shortcuts or easy ways to do things. The road to success is difficult, but the result is always gratifying. They should also trust in God with all their hearts. I want to particularly advise parents to take their children to good schools where they can get the best. Good education is the best legacy.

My daughter was rejected by federal school – Father

Can we meet you, sir?

My name is Uzonna Umeh and I am Nkechinyere’s father.

How do you feel that your daughter came tops in the UTME?

I know my daughter is intelligent. It started when she was in primary school. She was always among the top three. She left primary school in Class Five and did her common entrance and was on merit. We went to a federal school and they said we need to get somebody up there before she would be admitted.

That was how we took her to Deeper Life High School. Since she joined the school, we never had any regret. Her siblings also took the school’s exams and were admitted. We don’t pay a lot of money in the school, and their fees are moderate, but they treat the kids well and even feed them five times daily. God will bless everybody in that school.

Since Nkechinyere was declared the best candidate, has the family received any reward offer?

The first call I received after the result came out was from the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede. He said the Nigerian Society of Women Engineers was asking for my daughter’s data for an award.

I also saw it in the papers that she was being offered a scholarship to study at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University. But I have not been contacted yet on the details of the scholarship.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Pastor Eze Emmanuel, the School Administrator of Deeper Life High School, Lagos Campus (Mowe). I am a seasoned educationist and certified teacher.

What can you say about your student, Miss Nkechinyere Umeh?

To start with, I am thankful to the Almighty God and I feel excited for this laudable achievement. Talking about Miss Umeh who had the highest 2023 UTME score in Nigeria; she is diligent, resilient, God-fearing, a goal-getter, a limit breaker and purpose driven.

Are there other students who did well like her in your school?

Absolutely yes! As a matter of fact, we had students who scored 355, 351, 350, etc. Statistically, the breakdown of the 139 students who sat the UTME is as follows:

300 above -46 students

250 – 299 -65 students

200 – 245 -27 students

Below 200 -1 student (197)

One of our students, Andrew Imoukhuede, who scored 355, had 99 per cent in Mathematics.

Is there any plan to recognise and celebrate this record?

Yes! There are plans on the ground to celebrate the girl and her colleagues (Class of 2023). There are also plans to celebrate staff members who worked tirelessly to prepare them.

What’s different about your school?

Deeper Life High School is the brainchild of Pastor (Dr) W. F. Kumuyi, a renowned and distinguished man of God, known for holiness. The school was established in 2010 with a vision to transform our nation by producing upright leaders of the future through high-quality and sound education and a mission to produce students who are academically well-grounded, morally upright and adequately equipped as future leaders.

Deeper Life High School is a co-educational institution, with 21st-century e-learning gadgets, a home away from home to raise future leaders, who will transform our nation through high-quality and sound education.

As a faith-based school, we are meant to raise students with holistic excellence, discipline, honesty, holiness, hard work and integrity as our core values.

Our success stories cut across all areas. We are exceptionally unique in our educational programmes because it is a combination of moral, spiritual and academic excellence with zero tolerance for exam malpractice.

should also not look for shortcuts or easy ways to do things. The road to success is difficult, but the result is always gratifying. They should also trust in God with all their hearts. I want to particularly advise parents to take their children to good schools where they can get the best. Good education is the best legacy.
