If you're looking to craft your own furniture and you're in Tampa Heights, there's a fantastic place to get started: The Florida School of Woodwork.

In just one week, beginners can go from crafting a cutting board on the first day to building a table by the fifth day.

Kate Swann is no stranger to building furniture from scratch, but she never thought she'd be creating an entire school from the ground up.

“So the School of Woodwork has been around for nearly six years now. We're located in this charming historic building in Tampa Heights," Swann explained. "It all began because I was a custom furniture maker, and then students started coming, asking me to teach them woodworking. Eventually, the number of students grew so much that it overtook the furniture business, so we established the school."

Over the years, Kate has gathered an impressive lineup of instructors who are at the top of their game.

“We have furniture makers from all over the United States, true experts, who come here to share their knowledge with students. Essentially, we're a world-class local school," Swann proudly noted.

Every week, a new group of eager and enthusiastic students, like Danielle Crenshaw, a nurse seeking a creative hobby, enter the workshop.

"It's definitely easy, very achievable. Kate streamlines the process, ensures your comfort, and provides one-on-one assistance if you need it," said Crenshaw.

Kate not only teaches students how to use each piece of equipment but also how to use them safely.

"Well, I'm preparing for retirement in a couple of years. I'm trying to build a workshop and buy some equipment. I'm not sure what equipment to buy yet, so I thought I'd take a beginner class," said student Scott Flemming.

Then there's Garrett Pratt, who already works as a professional carpenter. His next goal is to start his own business.

"She offers online classes that guide you through job planning, estimating, what to look for upfront, and contract management," Pratt shared.

For Kate, the most fulfilling aspect is not just sharing her woodworking expertise, but also spreading the sheer joy of it.

"When I first started learning woodworking, I discovered that it was the most incredibly satisfying thing you could do. As we introduce new people to woodworking, we can see that same joy on their faces," Swann concluded.
