Barring any last minute hiccups, Savannah Marshall and Claressa Shields will finally face off in the professional game this weekend. Originally set for September, the bout was rightfully cancelled due to the tragic passing of our Queen. With so many premature announcements and disappointment in the sport at the moment, let's not jinx the occurrence of this one on Saturday!
The rivalry between Marshall and Shields first kicked off in the amateur ranks. Back in 2012 in the world's championship, Marshall handed Shields her only defeat of her 78 fights in the unpaid ranks. Shields, however, did claim the most trophies, winning both the Olympic gold medal and world championships twice. However, this defeat has no doubt haunted Shields into agreeing to this rematch in the UK.
From a records perspective, on paper this is a smart skilled boxer taking on a powerhouse. However, Marshall is more than just a puncher. With clever footwork, long levers and a fantastic tactician in her corner-Peter Fury- she has picked up 10 KOs within her 12 fight unbeaten career.
Stoppage victories have not been as forthcoming for her American opponent . Shields has forced just 2 within her 12 bouts. She would be correct to argue that her victories began at a higher level. In only her 4th fight in the Pros, she picked up 2 world title belts. Shields' is unquestionably gifted, nicknamed the greatest woman of all time. The 10x2 minutes distance may just suit the American's flashy combinations over her Hartlepool competitor.
Following the ghastly Eubank Benn fight week, we hope the ladies can project the sport back into a good light. A fight for female supremacy, legacy and bragging rights in the middleweight division. Savannah, Claressa time to take centre stage!
