She uttered a prayer under her breath for the umpteenth time of the day. Her heart was pounding inside her chest as she stared at the luminous screen. Consumed by fear and trepidation, she steadied her breath. As she tediously perused through the sea of names, her mind drifted into nostalgia. She recalled the first time she donned her gloves, the first time she held a syringe, all those quizzes she had failed, and all those times she spent burning the candle at both ends. She reminisced about all the bittersweet struggles she endured that led her to this exact moment. Her lips twitched into a smile as realization dawned on her that no matter what happens, she knew she did everything she could. She snapped back into reality as her eyes caught something. Her name was on the list. But thereโ€™s something different to itโ€”thereโ€™s a RN fixed on it.

๐–ญ๐–ค๐–ถ๐–ฒ | NORSU produces 25 new nurses

Harboring 92.31 percent passing rate in the July 2021 Nurse Licensure Exam (NLE), Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) produced 25 nurses from its 2018 and 2020 batch graduates.

With a total of 27 takers all from NORSU-Dumaguete College of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Health Sciences (CNPAHS), 26 were first time takers and one was a repeater.

Asked how she prepared for the exam, Christine Louise Sarsuelo, said, โ€œAkong gihimo is nag-browse ko sige og mga website ug apps nga naay practice exams kabahin og Nursing, as in gamit kaayo ang magsige og answer kay ma-improve jod ang testmanship.โ€

She added, โ€œAnd ayaw jod kalimot og rest and akong ginabuhat para dili ko ma-stress sa akong tun-an before ko magtuon, i-dula sa nakoโ€™g ML, dili man nuon na sa tanan pero pa-active lang sa utok.โ€

Karelle Trinidad, another passer said, โ€œKanang feeling na magkurog imong hands jod and mag-palpitate while trying to find your name on the list. Grabe, overwhelming kaayo sa feeling pero at the same time moraโ€™g โ€˜Sure naba jod ni? Nurse nako?โ€™. Overflowing kaayo ang happiness.โ€

The students took the July NLE in Cebu City and had their review at Apo Review Center.

The board exam was originally scheduled on May 30 to 31 but later rescheduled to July 3 to 4 due to the community quarantines brought by COVID-19 pandemic transpiring to several travel constraints.

Furthermore, 5,008 examinees successfully passed the NLE out of 7,746, posting a national passing rate of 64.65%.

โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of factors that can really affect our concentration. I just make sure that everything is in balance, [na Iโ€™m] physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy,โ€ Venus Esnardo, another passer said.

โ€œIt's worth the wait and prayers ra jod,โ€ Maxine Louell Sarsuelo, one of the passers stated.

| Every university, may it be public or private, has a student government. In the NORSU System, all its campuses have a Campus Student Government (CSG) to delegate administrative power. The power of the presidents from these CSGs is only confined to their respective campuses.

To represent the whole student body, a Federation of Student Governments (FSG) president must be selected among the CSG presidents which, according to the FSG Constitution, shall be the CSG president of the campus with the largest population.

As mandated by Republic Act 9299, the Federation President will represent the student sector in the NORSU Board of Regents (BOR), the highest governing body in the university. The position entails a great responsibility since the Federation President is not just representing the student body, but also bridging the gap between the faculty and the students.

With the passivity of the current FSG administration, various concerns from the students do not reach the university admin right away. The academic year will end in approximately three months, which only means that the current FSG administration will end their term doing anything or nothing that benefits the studentry.

More so, if the inactivity of any of the CSGs prevails until the end of the academic year, most probably, there will be no elections; and reasoning out that we are battling with the pandemic is not excusable โ€“ after a semester โ€“ not so much.

According to the FSG Constitution, CSG Presidents can appoint members of the Committee on Elections (COMELEC) comprising a Chairperson and six Vice-Chairperson, with the consent of the majority of the Legislative Department members of the respective CSGs.

The COMELEC then shall enact annually an Election Code, the basis for the conduct of the election, which must be presented and submitted to the Legislative Department. If the COMELEC will state in their Election Code that a virtual election shall be conducted for this year, then that means despite the pandemic, any CSG can still pursue elections before their one-year term ends.

There might be downsides in virtual elections, but having plans for conducting such โ€“ instead of sticking to what has become the status quo โ€“ is a huge step towards a progressive student government in the next academic year.

๐Ÿ“ข Given the remaining months of the academic year 2020-2021, how do you think should the current FSG administration address its existing state to better its service to the studentry at present and in the future? ๐Ÿ“ข

Grab the chance to receive a Php50 load gift by keying in your best answer in the comment section below. Two winners will be determined by the pub and announced come May 14, Friday. Exclusive to bonafide students of NORSU for the Second Semester of AY 2020-2021 only.

๐–จ๐–ข๐–ธ๐–ฌ๐–จ | Univ produces 28 new licensed pharmacists

Despite COVID-19 challenges, NORSU produced 28 pharmacists in the April 2021 Pharmacist Licensure Examination (PhLE) and ranked 20 out of 56 in the list of best performing schools.

Rating 66.67 percent, 26 of the total passers were first-time takers while two were repeaters.

Pharmacy Department Head Analiza Bais said the university outweighed above the national passing rate of 57.71 percent.

โ€œThere were factors that affected the result, like the postponement of the exam due to pandemic,โ€ Bais said.

The April 2021 PhLE result constituted a 24 percent drop from the August 2019 score of 90.48 percent passing rate, wherein the university ranked as the fourth best performing pharmacy school in the country.

Bais said the department did not expect for NORSU to be higher than its current placement since only those schools that have 50 takers and above are candidates for top performing schools.

Bais also mentioned that it is the first time for some takers to enroll in an online review.

Before the pandemic, Batch 2019 Pharmacy graduates were able to attend face-to-face review in Cebu City, while Batch 2020 graduates had to enroll in virtual review for the first time.

Moreover, the department assisted the graduates in processing application documents, while virtually communicating with the graduates for updates, concerns, and status of their reviews.

โ€œDespite the risk of having our review online, which is a first for all Pharmacy graduates [in NORSU], they [the Pharmacy department] believed and supported our decision to go through the review and take the exam,โ€ Pauline Rose Pfleider, one of the passers, said.

Recounting that the pandemic had greatly affected their preparations, Edmund Joseph Sumatra, another board passer, said they managed to get a rating higher than the national passing rate despite their worries to travel to the examination area.

Meanwhile, Madel Ta-asine, another passer, said, โ€œLahi ra jod ang face-to-face discussions labi nag inig mag-exam kay paper and pen gyud atubangon. Samot kami kay wala mi naanad anang online class, too many distractions sa environment.โ€

The new Norsunian pharmacists are listed as follows:
