Looking for for The Rural Post!

Dear Connections,
Greetings,

Hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy. The Rural Post was incepted from the collaboration and networking efforts by alumni of IRMA in April, 2020. The Rural Post has turned 1.5 years old and is looking forward for an experienced person to lead the initiative. The present team of volunteers at TRP has 12 members who are development professional and students. The growth, outreach and relevance of the initiative has made me write the post.

We are looking for an experienced/interested individual who would like to lead the initiative and serve as the Editor-in-chief of The Rural Post. The position though voluntary, encompasses a wider outreach and capability to influence rural journalism, policy and development space.

Major Activities involved are as follows:
1. Weekly follow-up with the teams on various marketing and publication activities
2. Strategizing future activities and onboarding relevant/interested volunteers in the team
3. Managing and introducing programmes like Young Rural Journalism Program and Collaboration for Change Program.

The position requires less than 6-8 hours per week and can be managed remotely. Since, it is a not-for-profit voluntary initiative, there is no remuneration for the same.

You can find more about the The Rural Post here: www.theruralpost.org

Kindly note: we are primarily looking for someone from IRMA Alumni Community, however, we are also wiling to consider Non-IRMAn candidates who are working in journalism/rural journalism/rural development/public policy and allied domains.

This article talks about the fallacy in the much-celebrated policy of
"Beti Bachao Beti Padhao". The government aims to increase the s*x ratio., improve the education level of girls and raise awareness on gender issues, but what are the challenges faces by the government and the community.
Let's talk about it.

The way most development actors measure empowerment doesn't capture the whole picture.

How much do we acknowledge the cultural diversity in India? Culture is a vast collective knit of features drawn from religion, customs, art, food, etc., and yet what makes it more complex and interesting is the diverse perceptions of this subject people have in our country.

The article is written by Aishwarya Dasari (Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai)

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989. According to recent data, about 2.8 percent of the population (3.1 crores) are reported to be cannabis users in India. Of them, 1.3 crores (1.2 percent) use its illicit products, g***a, and charas, while the rest use bhang. The highest number of cannabis users is in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, and Delhi.
Drug use has disastrous side effects that might be immediate or long-term. It damages the person inside out.
Let's pledge that we will neither lay down our hands-on drugs nor we will let any other get into the drug trap.

Let's not wait for "Planting Trees" to be cool, as the planet gets hotter. Let's build a better tomorrow

Every year June 17 is observed as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) was established in 1944, as a legally binding convention that links environment and development to sustainable land management. This year the theme is restoration, land, and recovery.

Land restoration can contribute greatly to post-COVID19 economic recovery. Investing in land restoration creates jobs and generates economic benefits, and could provide livelihoods at a time when hundreds of millions of jobs are being lost.

Every year 12th June is celebrated as World Day against Child Labour. The problem of child labor is still a challenge worldwide. Almost 1 out of 10 children worldwide are engaged in Child Labour. It deprives children of their childhood and education, rather than giving them physical and mental harm. Putting the household burden off the children's shoulders and giving them the freedom to education, this day focused on eliminating child labor and make the world a happy place for children.

Another case study from The Rural post is here on Trust building and inclusive approach.

Village Gumura in Keonjhar is one of the worst mines affected areas in Odisha where the tremors of explosives used in the mining activities can be felt at odd times of the day.
The District Mineral Foundation (DMF) is, therefore, undertaking large scale plantations in the unused barren lands with an aim to create an alternative livelihood source for the local farmers.

However, Parsuram Sardar, a local farmer, is showing disinterest and protesting against the plantation project due to distrust towards the state government. Read the case study to know how SG Foundation is handling the situation.
