‘Mute’, a neo-noir science fiction flick set in the same cinematic universe as Moon (2009). The connection between the two movies rhymes similar to the connection between Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and Alien. Mute is directed by Duncan James and written by Michael Robert Johnson and James himself. The film comes across as a decent but a sluggish two-hour jaunt.

The movie commences with a young Amish boy Leo drowning in a lake due to injuries on his neck from a boat propeller. His mother being strictly Amish refuses to allow him having an artificial voice. Years later, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) is a shy but matured man and works in a bar in Berlin with his girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh), who admires him for his simplicity and innocence. We are also introduced to Cactus (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), US Marine defectors in Berlin and doctor pals who stitch criminals in their pastime. All hell breaks loose for Leo when his girlfriend goes missing and he turns to a distraught lover who strives to find his beloved.

The focus remains more on how Leo goes about in search of his girlfriend rather than the surprising revelations about her life that he comes across, wherein lies the crux of the story. There is a quasi-dystopian aesthetic attached to this film about the society of the future that mirrors Blade Runner. If Jones tried to be experimental with this loosely attached sequel to Moon, he clearly didn’t seem to get very far. Surely, he can make up for this mishap later in the proposed third film of the Moon trilogy.

Be it flying cars, s*x dolls or drones delivering food, the movie doesn’t go too far with its lavish visuals and special effects to represent the future. They work only to distract the viewers from an already weak and stretched storyline. There is however a silver lining in the use colors that goes along with the tension in the film during Leo’s quest. Many credits also go to the art and makeup department who did a fine job in keeping the genre alive.

As far as the acting goes, Alexander Skarsgård did justice to his character of Leo despite a weak storyline. With limited screen time, Seyneb Saleh’s portrayal of Naadirah and her romantic gestures for Leo are certainly heart-warming. Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux who often go along in the film also deliver a powerful performance.

Mute is an average piece of drama coming from a talented director like Duncan James. It never completely evolves to be as promising as Moon but the cinematography, art direction and acting keep the boat afloat for the viewers to sit through the entirety of the film.
