Artist-Organizer Residency
Deadline to apply: Tuesday, June 1st
We are thrilled to offer our gallery space to an artist-organizer as a studio and workspace from June–August. This residency is intended for artist-organizers to work on research, editing, and/or curatorial projects. The opportunity comes with a $1,500 stipend and up to $500 reimbursement for related expenses.

The deadline to apply has been extended to Tuesday, June 1 at 11:59 pm EDT.

What you can expect:
WPA will provide a $1,500 stipend and up to $500 reimbursement for related expenses.
800 sq ft space with gallery lighting
24/hour access to space, which includes: slop sink, bathroom, kitchenette, Internet access, folding table, and chair (you will have private use of the space, aside from occasional drop-ins from WPA staff for administrative needs)
Curatorial and research support on a flexible schedule
Introduction to potential collaborators and resources including curators, scholars, archives, etc

Important Dates:

Women throw their money into the wind to support their incarcerated loved ones. Seven women of differing nationalities are expressing support in varying forms from prayer to visits. The seven stand in holiness as those that uplift their incarcerated loved ones and resist the profiteers who threaten to break up their families. The red background underscores the passion and blood in the scene. In the end, the colors of the American flag are inverted, the mark of a backward system.

PRISON PROFIT: TEARS
This triptych addresses the financial exploitation of American prisoners and their families by private corporations. The private companies, personified by six Titan-like figures, pull the prisoner in the center panel by cords attached to the services or products that they sell. Six were chosen intentionally to allude to man’s most corrupt form: 666. The blue background represents law enforcement.

An African American prisoner’s body is being used, or processed, by Pennsylvania Correctional Industries to make Big House products, like boxer shorts, for slave wages. These products are sold back to prisoners. A pack of six Big House boxer shorts costs $3.09 in the commissary.

As Covid-19 lockdown restrictions ease in the UK, a new art exhibition in London is shining a light on lesser-known aspects of Black history.
Celebrating everything from South African jazz to a 20,000-year-old mathematical artifact, "A History Untold" aims to showcase Africa's diverse contribution to world history.
The exhibition is presented by England rugby player Maro Itoje whose love of African art was formed by regular trips to Nigeria, the country of his parents' birth.
