As this Conservative government continues to insist that they don't have the money to increase NHS nurses' pay in line with inflation, more evidence has emerged that vast amounts of public funds have been syphoned off into the pockets of a Tory peer through the shady PPE contract system. Despite the deepening scandal, Rishi Sunak failed to remove the Conservative Whip from Mone, leaving his promise to put integrity at the heart of his administration in tatters.

Baroness Michelle Mone has been facing scrutiny since the beginning of the PPE contracts scandal in 2020, when serious questions were raised about her financial connections to PPE Medpro. At the time, she flatly denied any wrongdoing, no doubt aware that she was not the only government insider to use her links to loot the public purse and knowing that her connections would be doing everything in their power to shield their actions from proper scrutiny. (Remember the landlord of Matt Hancock’s local pub managing to secure a high-value PPE contract despite having no experience producing medical supplies?)

According to Transparency International, 20% of the Covid PPE contracts awarded raised “red flags” for corruption. Indeed the government’s own figures showed that £4 billion worth of PPE was burned because it didn't meet the required standards. The PPE contract 'VIP lane' looks set to become one of the most shameful episodes in this country’s recent history. An instinctively corrupt government uses its power to enrich itself at a time of national crisis. If ever something illustrated the rot at the heart of our democracy, that is it.

Sunak was probably hoping that the worst of the scandal was over – but the revelations keep coming.

Now, Michelle Mone is alleged to have connections to a SECOND company that she nominated to receive a lucrative PPE contract. Both PPE Medpro and this new company, LFI Diagnostics, seem to have been set up on behalf of her husband, Douglas Barrowman. Mone used her role in the House of Lords to directly lobby ministers for PPE contracts for both companies. She went as far as to threaten to expose Hancock’s corruption to get the contract. It all looks awful.

Rishi Sunak claims to speak for the public when he condemns nurses' strikes, yet by remaining silent on his own party’s abhorrent corruption, he shows just how out of touch he really is. This unelected PM wants us to believe that nurses seeking pay rises in line with inflation threaten the nation. But he says nothing about the billions of pounds used to enrich his personal friends and political associates or the corrosive impact that has on public trust and confidence in our democracy.

He does, though, seem to be correct that the public has had enough. Increasingly, people are saying that they have had enough of a party that treats national crises as an opportunity to enrich themselves and their chums. They are done with a system that lets Prime Ministers appoint people like Michelle Mone to unelected positions for life. Done with a government that is out of ideas, out of energy, but still in office.

The next general election looks likely to be one of those once-in-a-generation opportunities to make fundamental changes to our system of government. We are reviewing our 2023/24 priorities on that basis and we look forward to sharing them with you soon.

2023 is fast approaching, and it's clear it's going to be a busy year. We're ready for it. We hope you are too.

All the very best,

The Open Britain Team
