Enough is Enough

College students deserve a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment free from discrimination and violence. In July 2015, New York established Enough is Enough to address sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking on college campuses.

Enough is Enough was one of the first laws in the country to require:

All New York State colleges and universities to adopt a set of comprehensive procedures and guidelines.

•A uniform definition of affirmative consent.

•A statewide amnesty policy for bystanders or victims who report sexual assault.

•A students’ bill of rights.

•All campuses undertake campus climate surveys as well as prevention and awareness training.

•The law also created the Enough is Enough funding program for r**e crisis programs to support colleges and universities’ response and prevention needs.

Today, NYSOPDV oversees the Enough is Enough program. Funded programs work to prevent campus sexual violence via education programming that considers the root causes of gender-based violence, promotes bystander intervention, and promotes healthy relationships. They provide student victims with trauma-informed advocacy, counseling, case management and safety planning services.

In September 2004, after disclosing my r**e assault to the residence life administrator from the university I was attending, not only did he doubt my story, told me I was 17 years old, to call my mom, asked me what I wanted him to do, in return received a fine for violating university guidelines for having alcohol in my dorm room that didn’t belong to me.

The female whom I was sharing a dorm room with had allegedly invited two males into the unit with claims that she bartered their assistance to move her stuff into the apartment in exchange for alcohol. In a short period of time, consuming a high amount of mixed alcohol I quickly became drunk and passed out on the floor. By morning, in a catatonic state, I felt something was seriously wrong, as I had been date r**ed before my high school graduation earlier that year after turning 17. With my pants down, an unknown man was assaulting me while I was faced down on the living room floor of the dormitory.

A residence life assistant came to inspect the room and found alcohol bottles. Myself and two other females were interviewed, and I requested to be moved out of the apartment. My life started to become unmanageable and at the time I didn’t realize what was going on.

In early March of 2007, I was sexually violated after having an abortion procedure a few hours after at the college campus dorms by its father. My father asked me if I had the abortion I had to finish college with good grades or tell my mom and have the baby. John and father of the baby helped to finance the services. I never reported the assault due to the shame and guilt I had felt. If you say something, you are labeled an attention seeker, if you do not say something then you are preceived to have liked the incident and therefore takes the crime away from the assault, regardless of outcome, I was still slt shamed from my “peers.”

In March 27, 2007 I was awarded with “woman of achievement” from St. John's University.

In February of 2021, I made the decision to stop drinking, started a sobriety support group in spring of 2022 and am now working towards my healing regarding these incidents through Hidden Water, counseling and other methods known to ease symptoms of C-PTSD.

It is my hope to continue the conversation regarding prevention, intervention and action of childhood and adult sexual assault.

Thank you for staying connected with me. I am truly grateful to be alive today.
