A short story to set our Issue 15’s theme: “Almost” in motion

🚂💌⏳🍂

“But also, what the story is about is about this guy who can’t work up the nerve to talk to this woman sitting on the same train car as him. And in fact, 60 years pass … he’s paralyzed by this idea of who this woman is even though he never actually talks to her. It’s almost like he creates this fantasy in his head, and in some ways, the tension of the fantasy is more exciting than actually talking to her. And I realized I was kind of living that afterward, where I felt like the fantasy of the mystery around me is so much more interesting than if people actually got to know me and see: Oh, it’s just some guy who wrote a thing.”
- Raphael Bob-Waksberg on his story “Missed Connection — m4w,” which first appeared as a missed connections post on Craigslist

Sometimes the tension of the fantasy you create in your head about someone is more exciting than actually talking to them

🚂💌⏳🍂

“I had this idea to write this fake missed connection that starts very grounded and real, and gradually reveals itself to be a little more allegorical or magical — and just posted it anonymously on Craigslist. … And it got huge. …”

romanticize your entire life. think of it as a movie. no one cares if its “cringe”. you are your own motivation. maybe you scoff at videos that preach so called self care but what if you tried it? go on a short walk. read for an hour each day. do a face mask. it wont magically write your essay for you but maybe if you feel like “that girl” you’ll have enough motivation to start the first paragraph. that little café on the corner of your street might be a cute place to study in. get your tote and walk there. take a wannabe aesthetic picture of your iced coffee for your insta story if it helps. ignore all those thoughts in your head telling you it’s embarrassing. the main character of your favorite coming of age movie would. live your own “light academia studying vibe” tik tok even if you’re pretending. you might find that it’ll actually work.

Moon marked and touched by sun
my magic is unwritten
but when the sea turns back
it will leave my shape behind.
I seek no favor
untouched by blood
unrelenting as the curse of love
permanent as my errors
or my pride
I do not mix
love with pity
nor hate with scorn
and if you would know me
look into the entrails of Uranus
where the restless oceans pound.

I do not dwell
within my birth nor my divinities
who am ageless and half-grown
and still seeking
my sisters
witches in Dahomey
wear me inside their coiled cloths
as our mother did
mourning.

I have been woman
for a long time
beware my smile
I am treacherous with old magic
and the noon’s new fury
with all your wide futures
promised
I am
woman
and not white.

Perhaps you need a break from all the academic stress. Or maybe you’re just tired of your life spiraling down into madness and looking for a reason to smile.

Well, here you go: Bask in the joyful simplicity of dogs catching treats.

German photographer Christian Vieler has been snapping these amusing shots since 2013, when he bought a portable flash that allowed him to work with shutter speeds as fast as 1/8000th of a second.

“I asked myself: What is the magic behind these photographs? I think the expressions of the dogs remind us of well-known feelings like desire, loss, pain or joy. And that's what we normally don't see that clear in the faces of our dogs.”

A COLLECTION OF UNSENT TEXT MESSAGES TO FIRST LOVES

The Unsent Project is a collection of over 500,000 unsent text messages to first loves. Messages are submitted anonymously from people all over the world. Rora Blue started the Unsent Project in 2015 to figure out what color people see love in. To investigate this, submissions are displayed on the color the submitter associates with their first love. The content of the submissions are wide ranging, encompassing just about every emotion.

swipe ➡️

you know that person that comes into your life and turns it completely upside down. the kind of person that wakes up a whole new you. the separation from that person can be incredibly crippling. you sit and think about them for hours hoping that you’re running through their mind as much as they’re running through yours. and even after they’re gone traces of them linger within you as if they never left. living in that part of you that isn’t you at all, but a sketch that they etched onto your soul.

On a personal level, do we always have to be growing?

This depends on each individual and how they choose to manage what life brings them. Personally, I believe that every little thing that we come across is helpful to our growth.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned from a work of fiction?

The importance of human relationships and connections, any kind of relationship, from the dystopian fiction “Humans, Bow Down” by James Patterson. When you have the right person beside you, the right people being the people with which you feel connected to, that you can relate to and that are important in your life, you can really accomplish amazing things and overcome immense obstacles that you never thought you could manage without them. At the end of the day, the connections you have with people remain even when material objects perish and the wold as you know it turns upside down.

There are two types of people in the world. What are the two types?

Well first thing that came to my mind was that perhaps you wanted me to answer something like ‘good and bad’. Whether people are defined by their good will or evil will, defined by their charity work or by the crimes they’ve committed. Or maybe that people are defined by their inherent talent or their hard work towards excelling at something, those who are labelled as ‘lazy’ against the ones who get praised as ‘hard working’ and resilient, successful and unsuccessful’. But I don’t believe in any of that. Our perception of the world and the people around us is a construct of our own society. Success and failure is defined within cultures, people’s actions are perceived and weighted differently in eyes that have already experienced life in different colours. There are no types of people. What you make of yourself and how you define it depends solely on you.
