At Onyx Coffee Shop in Bentonville, Arkansas (home of the first Walmart) I had my first conscientious experience of seeking discomfort. It was during those glorious winter days between Christmas and New Years when I got the butterflies in my stomach when thinking about approaching a stranger and hearing their story. I didn’t know what was holding me back. Was it the fear of rejection? Embarrassment? The unknown? What ever it was, I felt it permeate through my body, After surveying the shop, I decided that this small group of young guys were the ones I wanted to hear from. I took a deep breath, approached them and said “Merry Christmas guys! Are you guys from around here?”. That’s all it took for the uncomfortable to turn into the comfortable. Jack, Ryan, and Rodger were born and raised in the small town of Bentonville and shared with me their experiences growing up, how they celebrate the holidays, and their future goals. These old time friends asked about me which allowed for an easy-going, convivial conversation. I learned a lot about Jack, Ryan, and Rodger, and most of all I learned that all it takes to cross the comfort zone is a deep breath and the first step. I asked to take a picture of them because because I liked the composition of their poses as if they were open and ready for anyone to join. I challenge you to do the same. Be ready and open to listen to others. Be eager and curious to learn from them too. @ Bentonville, Arkansas
