Trump vows to end wars, restore US power if elected again

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump promised Thursday to bring an end to raging international crises and restore American prestige on the world stage, saying he could “stop wars with a telephone call.”

The former president sought to paint a dire picture of the world under his successor Joe Biden, telling the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee that the planet is “teetering on the edge of World War III.”

“We will restore peace, stability and harmony all throughout the world,” Trump said, without giving any detail on how he might do that.

US and French arms exports climb, while Russian arms exports plummet

The USA’s arms exports grew by 17 per cent between 2014–18 and 2019–23, and its share of total global arms exports rose from 34 per cent to 42 per cent. The USA delivered major arms to 107 states in 2019–23, more than it has in any previous five-year period and far more than any other arms exporter. The USA and states in Western Europe together accounted for 72 per cent of all arms exports in 2019–23, compared with 62 per cent in 2014–18.

‘The USA has increased its global role as an arms supplier—an important aspect of its foreign policy—exporting more arms to more countries than it has ever done in the past,’ said Mathew George, Director of the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme. ‘This comes at a time when the USA’s economic and geopolitical dominance is being challenged by emerging powers.’

France’s arms exports increased by 47 per cent between 2014–18 and 2019–23 and for the first time it was the second biggest arms exporter, just ahead of Russia. The largest share of France’s arms exports (42 per cent) went to states in Asia and Oceania, and another 34 per cent went to Middle Eastern states. The largest single recipient of French arms exports was India, which accounted for nearly 30 per cent. The increase in French arms exports was largely due to deliveries of combat aircraft to India, Qatar and Egypt.

‘France is using the opportunity of strong global demand to boost its arms industry through exports,’ said Katarina Djokic, researcher at SIPRI. ‘France has been particularly successful in selling its combat aircraft outside Europe.’

Russian arms exports fell by 53 per cent between 2014–18 and 2019–23. The decline has been rapid over the course of the past five years, and while Russia exported major arms to 31 states in 2019, it exported to only 12 in 2023. States in Asia and Oceania received 68 per cent of total Russian arms exports in 2019–23, with India accounting for 34 per cent and China.

Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson has been suspended from the party after "refusing to apologise" for comments aimed at Sadiq Khan.

The Conservative Ashfield MP told GB News on Friday "Islamists" had "got control" of the mayor of London.

Responding on Saturday, Mr Khan described the remarks as "pouring fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred".

Losing the Conservative whip essentially expels Mr Anderson from his party in Parliament.

Just over an hour after Mr Khan's criticism, a spokesperson for the Tory party's chief whip Simon Hart said: "Following his refusal to apologise for comments made yesterday, the chief whip has suspended the Conservative whip from Lee Anderson MP."

Speaking on GB News Mr Anderson said: "I don't actually believe that the Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is they've got control of Khan and they've got control of London… He's actually given our capital city away to his mates."

Pressure then mounted on Rishi Sunak to take action over the comments from the Ashfield MP after Mr Khan criticised a "deafening silence" from the prime minister and his Cabinet.

Until January Mr Anderson served as one of the deputy chairmen of the Conservative Party, but he resigned so he could rebel against the government over the Rwanda vote.

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Khan responded to Mr Anderson's comments which he described as "Islamophobic, anti-Muslim and racist".

"These comments pour fuel on the fire of anti-Muslim hatred," Mr Khan said.

The London mayor added he was "unclear why Rishi Sunak and members of his Cabinet" were not calling out the remarks or condemning the comments.

Mr Anderson's remarks prompted criticism from some Tories - including former chancellor Sir Sajid Javid who reposted the video of Mr Anderson making the comments and wrote "a ridiculous thing to say". Trump cruises to victory, wins Iowa with unprecedented margin

Former United States president Donald Trump on Monday night won the Iowa Republican caucuses by an unprecedented margin

Trump, who kickstarted his bid to win the party’s presidential nomination, cruised to an easy victory in the lead off contest in the 2024 Republican presidential nominating calendar.

He exceeded expectations and shattered contested caucus records, securing more than 50 per cent of the vote.

We want to thank the great people of Iowa,” Trump said in a caucus victory speech.

Both Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley finished second and third, respectively, at roughly 20 per cent.

Meanwhile, Vivek Ramaswamy garnered roughly 8 per cent support among caucus goers and has also suspended campaign, throwing his support behind Trump.

UN Seeks $4.2bn For Humanitarian Aid In Ukraine In 2024

The United Nations said on Monday that it requires $4.2 billion to provide humanitarian aid in Ukraine in 2024 and assist millions of refugees who have fled the war-torn country.

As Russia’s war in Ukraine approaches its third year in February, the UN aims to reach 8.5 million people within Ukraine and 2.3 million refugees along with their host communities in Eastern Europe.

The UN stressed the urgent need for life-saving humanitarian aid due to a recent wave of attacks, coupled with the harsh winter conditions. The full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022 marked the biggest invasion of a European country since World War II and led to the largest refugee crisis faced by the continent since the 1939-1945 conflict.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched the Health Emergency Appeal 2024 targeting $1.5 billion to protect the health of the most vulnerable in 41 emergencies around the globe.

According to the organization, an estimated 166 million people require health assistance. The organization noted that it is already responding to 41 health crises, including 15 of the highest level ‘Grade 3” emergencies, and aims to reach some 87 million people with lifesaving humanitarian assistance in 2024.
