FACT: Single mothers are more likely to be poor in the United States than they are in twenty-six of twenty-nine comparable, rich democracies…

The wealth of single mothers is greatly affected by their race. Single white mothers had $46,000 in median wealth in 2019, whereas single Black and Hispanic/Latina mothers had about $4,000. Therefore singel white mothers had 11x more wealth, affording them a more comfortable cushion when dealing with unanticipated crises – like the pandemic.

And with all this being said, Black and Latina women are MORE LIKELY to be single mothers of children under the age of 17 than white women.

In 1970, California became the first state to offer “irreconcilable differences” as a reason to split, a.k.a, a pioneer in the “no-fault divorce.” Before then, one spouse had to accept “blame” for the marriage ending, which had far-reaching custody implications. No-fault divorce eventually became the nationwide standard.

The first divorce among American colonists happened in 1634 in what was the “Massachusetts Bay Colony.” Denis Clarke had deserted his wife and two children, and Puritan, John Winthrope, granted her a divorce, as punishment for Denis’ infidelity. This became the standard across America, but divorce was usually only given in extreme cases, and it had to be “for fault” — for example, adultery.

Research by George Washington University in 2019 looked at 200 cases in which mothers alleged child sexual abuse by fathers and found that courts sided with the mothers in just 15% of cases…

That same research shows → “In custody litigation when mothers reported abuse — including child abuse and domestic violence — the mothers lost custody 28 percent of the time. But when fathers alleged abuse, the fathers lost custody only 12 percent of the time.”
