Open Letter to Elder Hakainde Hichilema

Dear Elder,

I am writing this letter to you in faith, not representing the church, but as an elder of the larger SDA church in Lusaka and worldwide.

Firstly, I would like to remind you that true faith demands that when we are in positions of influence, especially at the national level, we must develop big hearts filled with forgiveness and reconciliation. Holding onto hurt and unforgiveness can harm the citizens. World leaders like Mandela are celebrated because of their ability to rise above personal hatred and the desire for revenge. These leaders demonstrate extreme tolerance and suppress the thirst for revenge, instead choosing reconciliation and showing love to those who persecuted them. In fact, the Bible, in Matthew 5:43-45, says, "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."

As an elder, I expect you, above many other leaders we have, to understand the power of prayer. It was disappointing to hear you describe the day set aside for prayer and reconciliation as useless and fake. Regardless of who chooses the day, we should always take advantage of every opportunity to pray, as encouraged in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, which says, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

In fact, Martin Luther once said, "God can draw a straight line with a crooked stick." You cannot continue to reject your faith just because President Lungu chose the day. Whatever motivated President Lungu to set aside this day, let us honor and use it to glorify God for the purpose of reconciliation and forgiveness. If we are to heal as a nation, especially with you as a leader, forgiveness is essential.

Take a lesson from your late brother and predecessor, Levy Mwanawasa. He reconciled with Sata, whom he confessed he had hated because Sata caused him so much pain.

My advice is that when you show love to people who deserve condemnation, they tend to be drawn towards you because they feel indebted to you with gratitude. Mwanawasa did this, to the extent that he called for a National Economic Indaba that brought together all citizens and political parties. This led to another significant event, a National Inter-Party dialogue, to which your party was invited, and you enjoyed the sense of togetherness. This move was chaired and moderated by the Council of Churches and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops.

My fellow elder, these achievements are well-documented, and we can all acknowledge the successes resulting from such efforts. Your hatred and lack of forgiveness are like a cancer to the nation and will harm us all, including yourself.

If you decide to move past this and start a new political and economic life for Zambia, we will be saved. I understand that the Patriotic Front government may have caused you pain, but we should not repay evil with evil, as the Bible says in Romans 12:17, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

Today, I have chosen to refer to scripture extensively because the last time I appealed to you, the two church leaders of our church, the SDA, distanced themselves from me.

Lastly, I urge you, my fellow elder, to embrace the virtue of humility by calling for an Inter-Party Dialogue to be organized by the mother church bodies one week before the National Day of Prayer. This dialogue should spearhead this year's Reconciliation and Prayer Day and attended by you my fellow elder, president Lungu and all other opposition political party leaders. Thereafter call for a National Economic Indaba which should encompass all stakeholders including all political parties, civil society organizations, youth organisations, business houses etc to transform the nation.

Love Leads And Conquires All.

Your Fellow Elder on Sabbbatical leave

Kelvin Kaunda

CABINET APPROVE THE AMENDMENT OF COTTON ACT NO 21 OF 2005.

JUNE 01, 2023

Lusaka. Cabinet has approved in principle to introduce a Bill in parliament to amend the Cotton Act No 21 of 2005 in order to enhance the regulation of cotton industry in the country.

The move is made to effectively broaden the mandate of the Cotton Board of Zambia CBZ and address the existing gaps in the current law.

The bill also seeks to introduce sufficient provisions for the regulation of the entire cotton value chain in line with international best practices.

This according to a media release issued by acting information and media minister Makozo Chikote.

This answers many industry player's call to have the act amended to ensure it corresponds to the prevailing market conditions and international standards.

The Cotton Act No 21 of 2005 established the cotton board of Zambia to regulate the production, gining and marketing of the seed cotton, set standards relating to the quality of the cotton crop in the field, seed cotton and lint.

The Cotton Board has also the responsibility of advising government on regulations policies and measures pertaining to the protection, control promotion and development of the cotton industry.

SEND ECL AS YOUR SPECIAL ENVOY TO CHINA, LUSAMBO IMPLORES HICHILEMA

….only he would secure you a favorable reception with President Xi Jinping

Lusaka, Saturday, May 20, 2023 ( Smart Eagles)

Former Lusaka Province Minister Hon. Bowman Chilosha Lusambo has asked President Hakainde Hichilema to send former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to as his special envoy to secure favourable reception with President Xi Jinping.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, Hon Lusambo said Zambia's relations with China is currently not jolly despite the Government failing to admit it.

He said it is therefore important for President Hichilema to approach his predecessor because he is better placed to be a special envoy to China, an all weather friend to Zambia .

“Amongst Ourselves there is only one person who is fit to be a special envoy on behalf of the Republic of Zambia. That person is Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The time ECL will go to Jog, HH must come to a consensus that where things are , the country must come first and he ask him to go to China to create space to meet Xi Jinping,” he said.

However, with President Hakainde Hichilema having visited some western Countries more than once and shunned China, Hon Lusambo is concerned that if the President goes to China without a special envoy, he will not be taken seriously.

Hon Lusambo said China should have been the first President Hichilema visited because it is key to Zambia’s quest to restructure it’s debt.

Meanwhile, Hon Lusambo has noted the need for leaders to concentrate on Governance and not politics for the benefit of the majority Zambians.

He said HH can learn a lot from ECL in terms of Governance because the latter was in Governments for a long time before he became president.

FREE EDUCATION FROM NURSERY TO UNIVERSITY UNDER THE SP GOVT

Under the Socialist Party (SP) government, schools will not be run the way they currently are. We will provide free education from nursery at the age of three all the way to university, and it will be compulsory up to grade 12.

Education will be a major undertaking in this country and will be allocated not less than 25 per cent of the national budget. Under this programme, teachers will not be left to manage and run schools on their own.

In order to have an effective, efficient, and orderly system, the running of schools will include other professionals and a broad spectrum of workers, such as human resources personnel, information technology experts, accountants, marketing personnel, cleaners, drivers, mechanics, gardeners, nurses, clinical officers, and catering staff, among others.

Schools, colleges and universities will need to be supplied with all sorts of teaching aids and other goods and services, and these will be produced in factories by our people, meaning that education will directly and indirectly be one of the biggest employers.

IT'S UNFAIR FOR LOCAL PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURING COMPANIES TO PAY VAT, DUTY WHEN IMPORTERS DON'T - UMAR

Lusaka, Saturday (May 20, 2023)

Pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Zambia have urged Government to level the playing field between local pharmaceutical manufacturing companies and importers in order to grow the sector.

Mohammed Umar, Chief Executive Officer of Pharmanova Zambia, one the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers in Zambia for 40 years now, said companies importing finished products do not pay any VAT or Duty.

Mr. Umar has urged Government to act swiftly to protect the only three pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Zambia.

"We need certain incentives from Government for us to grow as a pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. One of the challenges is Value Added Tax (VAT) and Import Duty," he said.

Mr. Umar said pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in Zambia pay VAT on raw materials coupled with the challenge of getting back VAT refunds on time because of cash flow issues.

He said Statutory Instrument (SI) 110 on Duty is not a solution to the problem if Zambia wants to grow the pharmaceutical sector.

"It is unfair for imported products to be more beneficial in terms of taxation than the locally manufactured products. We also appeal to Government to allow us to import machinery VAT and Duty Free in order to expand the sector," he said.

Mr. Umar said Government should act in line with President Hakainde Hichilema's vision of positive discrimination, where products should be bought from local manufacturing sector first.

"We need to grow the pharmaceutical sector in order to ensure a stability in Zambia’s medical supply chain which is not at the best at the moment. The measures by Government can level the playing field between local pharmaceutical manufacturing companies and importers," he said.

Mr. Umar said competitive pricing, producing local and job creation, all benefit Zambia's value chain which includes the transport sector, packaging sector among others.

He said one of the reasons to grow the sector is the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic where it was realized that there is need to be self sufficient, when it comes to medicine and medical supplies.

Mr. Umar said this during a Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM) Pre-Budget Meeting in Lusaka graced by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane.

ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION, TWO REALITIES?

By Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya

"How dare he speak ill of the President? Stay in your lane! Aba nabo!" That's the tone I expect as feedback from this article; largely because the country is incredibly polarised and quite heavily politicised. This is actually quite fair, seeing as most of the country's leadership is either by politicians or people close to politicians. As a consequence, supporters of said people tend to defend their own, and passionately so.

This will certainly not stop my article. I was fortunate to be one of the people that attended President Hakainde Hichilema's presser at State House on the 18th of May, 2023. But no, I must add that I have actually attended all of President HH's (as I like to call him) briefings. I have had the further privilege of being given the chance to ask him some questions, alongside other journalists.

At all his briefings, President HH seems to spend a decent amount of time registering his successes - which like anything else are quite arguable, but he can have that. Dare not ask him about his predecessor! Unfortunately, this incredibly reduces the chance for the press to ask their critical questions as there's little time, but even if they did, it's not like the President will give definite answers. With decades of experience, President HH has very solid experience as a politician and this tends to work well for him in evading questions with rather very general responses that for some reason seem to impress his supporters.

While this is the case, it might appear that President HH is living a different reality. It is important to mention that unlike what the President may believe, Zambia is certainly not a utopia, after he assumed office. Quite the contrary if we're keeping it a hundred (pardon my slang, I'm trying to keep my young friends in the loop - like the President often does).

In examining President HH's tenure, it is important to acknowledge his achievements while recognizing that they alone are not the solution to Zambia's challenges. One notable accomplishment is the commendable Napsa 20% partial withdrawal initiative. However, it is crucial to question whether this measure aligns with the President's perception. Despite this withdrawal option, the majority of Zambians still struggle to afford housing even with their entire NAPSA pension, let alone with a mere 20%.

Meanwhile, as the President and his health minister focus on allegations of drug theft and engage in political battles, the non-functional state of the Cancer Diseases Hospital continues to claim lives. Since mid-last year, the hospital has been without a functioning Linear Accelerator. While the minister of health is occupied defending herself against criticism, people are losing their lives.

An overarching issue lies in the President's inconsistency. His words often outweigh his actions. Last year, his administration promised to procure new linear accelerators by the year's end, yet no progress has been made. Similarly, he assured the nation that the issues surrounding KCM would be resolved by the first quarter of 2023, yet the situation remains stagnant.

Mining plays a vital role in Zambia's economy, and any disruptions in this sector have far-reaching consequences. Despite the President's promises of a swift resolution to the challenges faced by the mining industry, several months have passed with no tangible progress made.

Furthermore, senior government officials are disregarding media freedoms by giving uninvited interviews, a matter the President has chosen to ignore completely.

While the President believes that the lives of Zambians have significantly improved, it is vital to question this narrative. As a journalist interacting with numerous individuals, their experiences don't always align with the President's assertions. It raises the question: Is the President residing in a different reality altogether?

At the first briefing, I raised a crucial question to the President regarding a leaked audio involving two high-ranking officers within his administration. The conversation revealed a plot to undermine the independence of an opposition political party, which has effectively been reduced to insignificance. The President assured that an investigation was underway, but to this day, no progress has been made. It appears that the matter has been conveniently forgotten, perhaps reflecting our collective tendency to have a short memory.

In the beginning of 2022, the President and his government pledged a seamless farming season with timely and sufficient delivery of agricultural inputs. Regrettably, this turned out to be a catastrophic failure. How can the President's assurances of timely input delivery be trusted now, considering his past bold statement during a BBC interview, where he claimed his choice for the Bank of Zambia governor would astonish citizens, only to ultimately appoint Edgar Lungu's former candidate?

Speaking of Edgar Lungu, it begs the question: When will President HH move beyond his feud with his predecessor? This ongoing rivalry serves no purpose for the nation and is rather tiresome. It is time for the President to focus on substantive issues and prioritize the needs and aspirations of the Zambian people over personal animosity.

In conclusion, while recognizing the President's commendable achievements, it is essential to critically evaluate his actions and the realities experienced by the Zambian people.

Unaddressed concerns regarding the leaked audio, mining challenges, failed promises in the agricultural sector, and an incessant feud with his predecessor highlight the need for a more consistent and proactive approach from President HH. Only by confronting these issues head-on and aligning rhetoric with concrete actions can Zambia truly progress and achieve a brighter future for all its citizens.

Zambia Must Prosper Party (ZMP) President
Kelvin Fube Bwalya - KBF is saddened to learn of the fire incidents at KAPIRI Girls Technical Secondary school in KAPIRI MPOSHI district which gutted three dormitories prompting government to close the learning institution with immediate effect.

He says it is sad that the school has faced the fire outbreaks which have left property worth millions of Kwachas belonging to government and the pupils lost in the process but luckily that no life was lost in the inferno.

Mr. Bwalya has urged government to quickly put in place measures for the rehabilitation of the school so that the learners are not inconvenienced greatly as education is a right and ensure enhanced security measures so that such incidents do not recur.

He says ZMP Party regards education as a priority sector such that once ushered into government in 2026, the sector will begin to be funded adequately as it sits on the edge of sustained national economic development and national prosperity.

PRESIDENT HICHILEMA ALLEGEDLY FAILED TO ADDRESS PERTINENT ISSUES AFFECTING THE NATION DURING HIS PRESS BRIEFING YESTERDAY

By Chileshe Mwango

Some opposition political parties have expressed displeasure with President Hakainde Hichilema’s failure to address pertinent issues affecting the nation during his press briefing at state house yesterday.

Green Party President Peter Sinkamba says President Hichilema failed to give a proper direction on current developments in Zambia’s mining sector.

In an interview, Mr. Sinkamba says he expected the President to give a concrete update the Konkola Copper Mine -KCM- and Vedanta Resources saga and the financing of Mopani Copper Mine and not just assuring that government is working hard to address the matter.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party Spokesperson Frank Bwalya has urged President Hichilema to move on and forget about the challenges he faced whilst in the opposition.

Mr. Bwalya says the president wasted his time on expressing his hurtful feelings towards his predecessor Edgar Lungu at the expense of addressing serious matters affecting the country.

And National Democratic Congress -NDC- Saboi Imboela says the President failed to meet citizen’s expectations who looked forward to him providing direction on the country’s development.

WHY DO YOU FEAR THE PRESIDENT, WHY ARE YOU NOT TELLING HIM THE TRUTH THAT HE IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH?

By Hon Saili Mavegie Phiri

When I was watching a press briefing yesterday, I felt like I was watching a campaign rally. It was like watching a President addressing predecessors weaknesses. Through the whole press briefing I learnt that People are not honest.

The president claims that he secretly talks to the former president ECL and that he is a good person spearheading the reconciliation and the other one is not telling the public the truth. so my question was, if that's the truth, why does he keep on castigating his predecessor in all his public appearances?

If the president meant to reconcile himself with his predecessor, he would have avoided talking much about his predecessors weaknesses and failures. He would have focused much on how to shame the public that think he is a difficult person who is not willing to unite with the other.

If Edgar Lungu failed it's not his duty as a president to judge him because one day people will also judge him. “Chimbuzi chinukhila ali panja, kunya nkudekha”.

The toilet starts smelling when you are out. Allow your works to speak for you, people will judge and credit you. It is not the duty of the President to praise himself, but the people who see his works, your works will speak for you.

Imagine if you were Edgar Lungu and whenever your successor is having a public appearance all he talks about is you, what would you think about that person? would you wish to reconcile with such a successor? The focus shouldn't be on what PF govt did but what you are able to do.

People are not telling the President the truth because they are scared .

Mumbi steps away from PF presidential race, announces plans to form NGO

By Angela Muchinshi

FORMER PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri says she will be stepping away from the PF presidential race because her focus now is looking at the welfare of women and children in prison.

And Phiri says President Hakainde Hichilema should be careful with the people he appointed because most of them still have presidential ambitions.

Meanwhile, Phiri says she would prefer that the PF holds the convention in 2025 because whoever they elect as president will be targeted by the UPND government.

Speaking when she featured on Hot FM’s “Hot Seat” programme, Thursday, Phiri said she regretted announcing her intention to contest the PF presidency too quickly.

RAPPER RICK ROSS TO RUN FOR MAYOR.

"We gon' give some people raises and, of course, we gon' have to clean some people out"

Rick Ross is ready to make some changes in his town after county officials denied the permit for his upcoming second annual Rick Ross Car and Bike Show and concert. Now, he's claiming he wants to run for office.

On Wednesday (May 17), Rick Ross went on Instagram to react to news that the Fayette County Planning and Zoning Commission is trying to stop him from holding his car show on his 235-acre Fayetteville, Ga. estate. Rozay was adamant that the show must go on as planned on June 3. He also announced his plans to run for mayor.

"I love Fayetteville so much. Next year I’m running for mayor," Rick Ross told his IG followers. "That’s right. The boss Rick Ross running for mayor of Fayetteville. I wanna know how many votes did it actually take to vote in the mayor of Fayetteville."

He continued, "I need to know that ‘cause we gon' become that. We gon' make that happen, and we gonna have a good time. We gon' give some people opportunities, we gon' give some people raises and, of course, we gon' have to clean some people out."

Despite holding the inaugural Rick Ross Car and Bike Show on his Promise Land estate last May, the rapper's neighbors petitioned the event this year, citing traffic issues caused by the first event. County officials sided with Ross' neighbors, noting the event "is not in compliance with Fayette County Zoning Ordinance."

MY TAKE ON TODAY'S PRESS CONFERENCE BY PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

By Maxwell Chongu

Mr. President as much as i would like to applaud your efforts with regards to, Social cash transfer and NAPSA Partial withdrawal program above all economic growth based on graphical illustrations from 1973 to 2023 am doing so hesitantly as majority citizens will agree with me that the following areas were not well addressed nor satisfactory solutions given.

1.. The impasse around KCM and MOPANI.

2.. Why are we finding it difficult to approach CHINA considering the fact that it's the major key player in our debt restructuring program.

3.. Gross Incompetence at Ministry of Agriculture were majority citizens expected you to take decisive action to avoid a repeat of shortage of maize which triggered escalation of mealie meal Price to unprecedented levels in our country.

4.. Shortage of medicines in hospitals and measures put in place to ensure availability of medicine through straightening the supply chain.

5.. Gross Professional misconduct exhibited by Law Enforcement Agencies disregarding rule of law with impunity, denying people police bonds, infringing on people's rights enshrined in our supreme document of our land herein referred to as the constitution, seizing people's assets and accounts before investigations are concluded leading to massive layoffs above all artificial shortage of money in circulation.

6.. Non payment to suppliers and contractors.

7.. The diplomatic shift of Cadrelism from markets and bus stations to the civil service space.

8.. The use of heavy hand of the police on opposition.

9.. Lack of Business and Employment Opportunities particularly among the YOUTHS and WOMEN amidst high cost of living.

10.. Steps taken by government to arrest high cost of living, fuel, electricity terrifs, fertilizer and high Mealie meal prices.

11.. Stagnant civil servants salaries amidst high cost of living tempting them to engage in corrupt activities.

12.. What measures is UPND Government putting in place to empower and employ *CADRES chased from markets and bus stations* to avoid criminal activities and civil disobedience skyrocketing to unprecedented levels.

13.. Government position on rampant illegal mining activities in central Province and luapula province with minerals worth millions of dollars disappearing in thin air.

ARE LOCAL AUTHORITIES DEFYING THE PRESIDENT ?

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has restated his position on the acquisition of luxury vehicles by government entities noting that he shall not tolerate it.

However, in a colourful event that characterised the popping of champagne and officiated by the Mayor Johnson Kang’ombe ,Chingola Municipal Council recently boasted of purchasing eight brand new vehicles from at an alleged cost of six million eighty four thousand, five hundred and seventy nine.

Among them are six 4x4 vehicles bought from to be utilised by directors for their daily activities, another 4x4 luxurious vehicle for the town clerk and for the mayor.

Some officers from the service department noted that the purchase was peculiar as the council opted to postpone the purchase of the grader which is of urgent need nor council police vehicles but the new management opted to purchase luxurious vehicles for the council top management as well as luxious furniture for top offices neglecting even the service officers who need pull vehicles in planning, finance and engineering.

But in his address reiterating his position again President Hichilema said; “We do not want VX’s, if you check the extravagance comes, wrong policies come, leadership come and children will not be in school, simple.

“Under Kaunda ministers were driving Peugeot 504, Frank, Toyota Cressida. Today I say to my colleagues in cabinet do not drive the VX they think I am denying them luxury. Now how can you have luxury without production. I am glad my cabinet understands that, I am very lucky. I want to thank these ministers. But for those that fill offended the taste of the pudding is in the eating. The more luxury came after 2011 the picture is there, so we must desist from extravagance," he said.
