Children of the Siege. VR Sketches
OTD in 1944, during World War II, the Soviet Union announced the end of The Siege of Leningrad, one of the longest and bloodiest sieges in history. In total, the 872 day siege is estimated to have cost up to 1.5 million lives. Most died of hunger, others by German bombs and artillery shells.
We mark the 78th anniversary of the end of the siege with an animated movie, ‘Children of the Siege. VR Sketches’, dedicated to the children trapped in Leningrad by Nazi forces.
Since then, the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg (Музей истории Санкт-Петербурга) has kept about 700 children's drawings made during the siege (September 8, 1941 – January 27, 1944). We decided to give these drawings a new life using VR animation together with the world’s best VR artists.
The team of VR artists - Sa1nt Denis, Sutu Eats Flies, Vlad Vrhuman Ilic and VR Rosie - brought historical drawings to the virtual space. Each of them created a three-dimensional illustration in their own unique style.
The movie is a culmination of the ‘War: Kids’ drawings in VR animation’ Facebook series, which is part of a larger cross-platform #VictoryPages project, dedicated to 75 years since victory over Nazism.
