This month we are reading, The Push by Ashley Audrain

Book Description:
A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family, and about a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for, and everything she feared.

Blythe Connor is determined to be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby, Violet, that she never had.

But in the thick of motherhood’s exhausting early days, Blythe doesn’t find the connection with her daughter she expected. She’s convinced something is wrong with Violet—she is distant, rejects affection, and becomes increasingly disruptive at preschool.

Or is it all in Blythe’s head? Her husband, Fox, says she’s imagining things. Fox doesn’t see what she sees; he sees a wife who is struggling to cope with the day-to-day challenges of being amother. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

Then, their son, Sam, is born—and with him, Blythe has the natural maternal connection she’d always dreamed of. Even Violet seems to love her little brother. But when life as they know it is changed in an instant, the devastating fallout forces Blythe to face the truth.

The Push is a rare and extraordinary gift to readers: an utterly immersive novel that will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, about what we owe our children, about what really happens behind the closed doors of even the most perfect-looking families and about what it feels like when women are not believed.

“It would be helpful if we all viewed mental health on a spectrum”

This quote from in Episode 62 is thought provoking.

What if we did view mental health on a spectrum? Would that change the stigma? Would it change the way we treat those with mental illness?

Just think about it.

This month, we’re reading Starfish by Lisa Fipps , and we’d love for you to join in the discussion

Book Description:
Ever since Ellie wore a whale swimsuit and made a big splash at her fifth birthday party, she’s been bullied about her weight. To cope, she tries to live by the Fat Girl Rules—like “no making waves,” “avoid eating in public,” and “don’t move so fast that your body jiggles.” And she’s found her safe space—her swimming pool—where she feels weightless in a fat-obsessed world. In the water, she can stretch herself out like a starfish and take up all the room she wants. It’s also where she can get away from her pushy mom, who thinks criticizing Ellie’s weight will motivate her to diet. Fortunately, Ellie has allies in her dad, her therapist, and her new neighbor, Catalina, who loves Ellie for who she is. With this support buoying her, Ellie might finally be able to cast aside the Fat Girl Rules and starfish in real life–by unapologetically being her own fabulous self.

The Now What Pod Episode Quotes:
“There’s no Guidebook for all of these feelings”

About JaniceLife throws curve balls constantly; that’s what living is – learning how to dodge them. It’s ok, I had the ultimate dodgeball partner, and we had been accomplishing challenges of all sizes seamlessly together for over thirteen years.
In February of 2019, I was thirty-five weeks pregnant with our third child when we got the ultimate curveball of all – cancer.
Chris died in August of 2019. I struggle with his loss, but also the trauma of cancer itself and what I went through during his diagnosed period.
Eighteen months after my husband Chris died, I received my cancer diagnosis of an advanced cervical tumour. I fought to be listened to, was turned away from the hospital, and was seen as a newly widowed young mother with health anxiety.
This is my story as I move forward, rediscover who I am, and rebuild my life from (almost) scratch. If I can help someone else feel less alone and close my wounds a little bit, then I have accomplished what I’ve set out to do.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day as designated by the WHO and World Federation for Mental Health.

Since so many of our conversations go back to the importance of our mental health and well-being and the importance of having access to the right supports, this years theme of Making Mental Health and Well-Being a Priority for All, aligns so well with the work we do on the pod.

So what we want to know is, how do you support your own mental well-being, how do you support those around you?

This weekend is most commonly known as Thanksgiving here in Canada and until last year was Columbus Day in the US.

Both holidays commemorate the what was essentially the settlers taking this land, known as Turtle Island, over from its Indigenous Peoples.

While we support celebration and showing gratitude for our families, our health and all of you, it only seemed right, as we strive to be inclusive in the stories we share, that we acknowledge that it is more appropriate on this weekend to honour the land in which we live and the fall harvest. As well as honour those who came before us on this land with a land acknowledgement.

We acknowledge we are hosted on the lands of the Mississaugas of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat. We also recognize the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and the Inuit peoples.

Enjoy your families and long weekend this weekend, but please also take some time to learn about those whose land you are on.

Happy Harvest!
