In my seminary class on the doctrines of our faith, our professor Dr. John Hannah told a story of how he prayed for his girls when they were growing up. “I used to pray for their safety and their protection,” he said. “Then one day I realized what God would have me pray is for His will to be done in their lives. So I changed and started praying that. And I added ‘And give them the grace to accept what You have planned.’”

I remember having similar thoughts when we raised our six. I too prayed for safety, often because I loved our children and when they got hurt, I hurt. When they suffered, I suffered too. Because parents and grandparents love these little people God has given us, this is a natural prayer.

But is safety the most important request we can ask of God?

🔑The Key to Answered & Effective Prayers

Matthew 6:5-6 & 6:16-17

"When you pray." "When you fast." - Jesus' expectation is clear.

The issue is pride. God made a way for you to humble yourself... Fasting.

Pride is viscious and evil. It keeps us back from the Blessings that God intends for us.

First example of pride = Lucifer the fallen angel

Luke 14:11

Phil 2:9

Humility is the essential key/condition 🔑 to effective prayer.

James 4:10

Humble yourself.

Psalm 138:6 & 2b

There is no access to God with pride.

Psalm 35:13 "I humbled my soul with fasting."

Your soul is separate from your spirit.

Your spirit is regenerated & brand new as a Christian.

Your soul is your:

1) Will (What I want)
2) Intellect (What I think)
3) Emotions (What I feel)

So, who is the master of your life?

You, the enemy or God?

Protection and direction are important outcomes of humbling ourselves and seeking God's face.

God's way works!! Again, He never changes.

1 Kings 21 Elijah the prophet pronounced judgement on Ahab who was known as being the most sinful king ever. God relented the judgement upon him because he chose to fast, humble himself and seek God's face.
